I tried Shoulder Monkey from a recommendation from a friend... it was ok. Saw one of my fave bourbons so i got that to... WR way better than the scotch... but was also twice as much. Im wolling to try a better scotch.

One of my favorites is Oban. If you want a great bang for your buck whisky, try an Irish whisky called Bushmill's Black Bush. Aberlour is another Scotch I enjoy.
If you like more Peaty Earthy Scotches, I'll refer you to PapaG.

one thing i recommend is knowing whether the bottle is peaty or smoky in advance
one of those things that is a bright line for many people, either like it or don't (it's at least partially genetic - see below)
either Johnnie Walker Black (blend) or Green (blend of single malts) might be a good one to try to see if you like those flavors - they have both, but mildly
to me there is a big difference between smoke and peat, i like a little bit of smoke in the background, but the earthy peat and super-smoky flavors are a hard NO for me

no smoke or peat at all
and Monkey Shoulder is a bargain whisky... and tastes like it, but it's better than many of the cheap blends, like JW Red or Dewar's White Label (the Dewar's with age numbers, 12, 15, & 18 are pretty good)
i would say it's an easy drinker - doesn't suffer much from being on the rocks

if you want to wade into peat/smoke, JW Green is a really whisky ~$60
and about as far as i can go into peat/smoke
you can always use the Monkey Shoulder for cocktails
