I’m the kind of person that likes to throw lighted matches onto combustibles, so thought I’d heave this out there:
Which is better? I enjoy both, but prefer Scotch. It comes from a nobler grain, vs well… corn…
Lots more variety and nuance too, versus variations on the same (too sweet) theme.
Truly not putting bourbon down - well not much, but thought some spirited discussion (pun intended) might be fun. I’m sure there are strong partisans in both camps.

Then you are drinking some crappy Scotch my friend. A good Scotch is like butter smooth vanilla flavored silk with a little smoke around the edges. But I love a good bourbon too

I really don't like scotch or Bourbon... I'm more of a vodka and beer person.
A good bloody mary would be mighty tasty this morning, but I have to go to the periodontist for a tooth implant at 10:30.

I have tried numerous brands of scotch from less expensive to very expensive. I absolutely cannot stand the taste of scotch. On the other hand, I have tried numerous bourbon brands from less expensive to very expensive and have generally liked/loved them all. Guess it is a matter of personal taste.

Started drinking Scotch in HS, Dewars mostly & other blends, but really got into it in college at fraternity parties. I found out that if you took vodka, rum or bourbon to the party you’d be lucky to drink much of it yourself much less have any left for “hair o’ dog” next day. With Scotch you were pretty sure to consume most of it yourself. Got into single malts after that (McAllan 12 for usual consumption, 18 for special) but the bros that ragged about my Scotch back in the day have all converted over the years. Now the arguments are about which single malts are the best!

love good Scotch Whisky.. i'm a Speyside/Highlands drinker.. stay away from the really peaty or super smoky.. a little wisp of smoke in the background or at the finish is nice
not much of a bourbon fan.. but if there is a lot of rye in the mash bill, i can drink it,
but most of the time i find the corn-sweetness very unpleasant

I tend to stay under $60.
Edit.. I did have a Glenlivit 25 rare bottle(special collection) but I sold it when I found out how much it was going for at the time($300-350, currently $700)
Monkey Shoulder was my "everyday" Scotch...don't drink often now.

not sure the 21 is worth what they are asking for it these days.... it's good, but not that good
that foto is from a few years ago, that was a tasting i did for a friend
i picked up the Aberfeldy 16 finished in Madeira casks from an airport duty free last year... one of my favorites. i like several of the wine-cask finishes.. got the 15 in this foto from a UK site

I’m 95% Irish Whiskey. High end bourbon is fine, but I still prefer a run of mill Irish Whiskey over a high end bourbon. Everything aged 15 years or more is better, you get to 25 years and you’re approaching fabulous, but those are once a year bottles, if not longer.

It isn't too smoky or peaty, IMO. Aged in American Oak barrels so it is Scotch American.

if you like bourbon, try the Glenfiddich 14.. little more than your price range, but one of the most bourbon-y scotch expressions you will find
more directly in your price range:
Aberfeldy 12 easy drinking honey sweetness at the base, just a teeny tiny hint of smoke
Glenfiddich 12 sweet and fruity
Johnnie Walker Black - mildly smoky and peaty
Dewar's 12 & 15 both much better than the entry-level White Label
Monkey Shoulder another easy drinking whisky - blended malt so no grain whisky in this one
Johnnie Walker High Rye - fairly unique for scotch with a significant rye influence - spicy

Glenlivet 12 certainly gets the job done, but I think it can still be a bit harsh if you don't love scotch. I've had success converting several non-scotch drinkers to the good side with Macallan 12.

Try some lightly peated examples. I’m not a big fan of the heavy peat ones. I still have some Laphroaig that is like chewing on a creosote post.
To each his own, though, including choosing bourbon instead.

Laphroig has always puzzled me as to why it is popular. It has a very distinct Band Aid flavor to me. I enjoy both scotch and bourbon. There are just as many nuances (although different) to both. "Bourbon is too sweet" just does not apply to all bourbons.

My preference is Kentucky & Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey and Rye over Scotch & Irish Whiskey. So yes, I like it just a little bit sweeter. Also drank some Japanese Whiskey in Tokyo ... like Gordon Lightfoot sang it made me "get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain."

I spent a lot of time in Scotland with work when I was in my 20s and took a liking to Scotch. I also took a liking to the culture I was learning in the Scottish Pubs….nothing beats it. I have tried my fair share of scotches over the years and Talisker is my favorite. I remember when I could get it for under $50, now I feel lucky to get it under $70. It is from western Scotland, so it is peaty but it’s still very smooth! For those that like to travel, I couldn’t recommend Scotland enough. If you can’t have fun there, you can’t have fun anywhere! The nicest people in the world aren’t from the south, they are from Scotland.

Used to prefer bourbon, but went on a business trip one weekend and my business partner said by the end of this weekend you are going to like scotch. We drank nothing but scotch and darned he was right. I love scotch. Having said that I drink both now. I seem to prefer bourbon and porter beers in the winter and drink more scotch and light beers in the summer. i like the variety.

I like both. But just most everything else in the world, the more expensive one's are generally the better ones. You can have blended scotch. Most of the to me is high grade lighter fluid. Single malts are generally better to me. But can't afford the one's I really like. Just mooch off friends that buy it.
I try to stay upper-mid level shelf on bourbon. Elijah Craig is my go-to at the moment. A very good friend shared some Elijah Craig 18 year the other night. Dangerously smooth. I think he said it was $139/bottle. I do like Buffalo Trace, Col. Taylor, Blade and Bow and Angel's Envy and will splurge on one of those from time to time. Problem here is finding it on the shelf. Goes out as fast as it comes in.
Saw an ad where you can get your own personal barrel of Angel's Envy. I can hardly afford the bottle. Can't image what the going rate for a barrel would be. They left that out of the ad.
I like an Irish whiskey from time to time. Jameson's is always good. Had some Proper Twelve the other night that was really good.

Agree - good scotches are more expensive, though there are some that are a good bang for the buck. Google for that - tastes vary so much that one man’s trash is well, you know..,
Just had the Proper Twelve on a vacation, speaking of good bang for the buck.
Angels Envy Rye is pretty awesome, but $$$

Hate to bump my own thread, but ran across this bottle today that is an absolute outlier. A blend, but a really rare barrel wood. Defies its heritage and price. Not best ever or even close, but likely the best $35 bottle you can lay your hands on. Not sure, but it may be a limited run. If you’re a scotch guy, a fun one to grab.

I was always told that Scotch was an "acquired" test. Frankly, anything that I must work at acquiring the taste ..... forget it !!!

I recently bought some Mr & Mrs T Classic Long Island Iced Tea mix from Kroger and mix it with KetelOne and then splash of lemon.
Just a suggestion and
I know this convo is about Scotch v Bourbon. So then I go Glenlivit 12 and/or Elijah Craig

the whole 'smooth' series is pretty good. IMO the Japanese is the best
but the Mezcal 'Ilegal Smooth' {that is the correct spelling - the Mezcal name, not an adjective} is also great - on par with the Mizunara, but really hard to find lately. really nice mild smoke to it
the rum, 'Caribbean' is pretty good if you like the sweeter side - very easy drinking
the French and Port versions are both super sweet.. a bit too much for me

i'd put the Dewar's 21, 27, and 32-year 'double-doubles' up against almost any single malt
when the weather is cool, it's almost always a single malt neat, or with a little water, for me
but this time of year, i go for the relatively less expensive blends and ice
