first place. Had the Democrats gotten the Republicans to agree to the subsidy extension, they would have saved Republicans from themselves. The most useful thing from a political standpoint was to have the subsidies lapse, and then have people mad at Republicans for their high costs. You could argue however that they brought a lot more attention to the issue, so people now know where to place blame for their higher prices.

because Trump has shown people prefer fake toughness over moderation.

But it's hard to argue that the Democrats won't win the messaging fight over the next year. Democrats can say "Republicans cared so little about you that we could never win the fight so we did our best but we sacrificed our goals to protect people" while the Republicans have to somehow message out of "The Democrats failed because we were willing to hurt people!"

Sucks in the short term, but Democrats will win in the long term.

With the gridlock in Congress - this might become the norm though. The minority party shutting things down to make a point. (I THINK the Pubs did it a few years ago to make a point about illegal immigration - although I might be misremembering that.)

Now when the shutdown ends and more Americans get screwed by the contents of the BUB, you'll have one pissed off populace against incumbents in 2026.

I agree that most Americans blame Trump and the Pubs for the shutdown and that the voters expressed their displeasure with Trump not only in NJ and VA, but in races across America, even in GA.

The Dems won the messaging war in directing public outrage towards Trump and the Pubs, but I don't agree that that outrage is in the right direction.

The facts are the Dems used the filibuster 14 times to shutdown and keep the government shutdown. They used what they called an anachronism when they were in charge, to keep the government closed.

After all this, they caved and got the promise of a vote re: ACA subsidies. Was all this worth trying to save Schumer's ###? He voted yes for the same CR in March and and then pivoted 180 degrees to vote no on this CR. AOC will probably beat him, if she chooses to run.

The ACA subsidies in my opinion will not completely go away as removing them entirely would negatively impact lots of Pub legislators as well. There will be changes, but self preservation will keep alive these subsidies in some form.

It's immature when either Party votes to not fund the government, but make no mistake, the Dems voted to shutdown the government and keep it shutdown. Now, they have caved with not much to show for it, according to Bernie, Hakeem and MSNBC which may be on suicide watch.

Gonna be a lot of primary challenges I suspect. If the Pubs completely do away with the subsidies, the Dems will have a potent weapon to use in 2026. The shutdown itself is a loser for them.

Honestly, a lot of rural hospitals need to close and be replaced with clinics.

I would be but the simple fact is that it would take payroll taxes rising and a VAT tax on goods /services to pay for Universal healthcare. Then you need to address the issue of all healthcare folks becoming govt. employees to make it work in a cost effective manner. Plus since you would limit the pay structures you would also need to have free tuition or pay loans for those in medical fields. Hospitals would also need to be rolled under the govt. umbrella. I as a fiscal conservative am fine with Universal healthcare if you can pay for it because $3T-$4T annually has to be paid and not borrowed.

The shutdown was definitely on the Dems, but I don't really think that had anything to do with Dems gaining ground in the last election. That was mostly on the fact that, at this point, any opposition is acceptable when the President is insane.
