I have no reason to believe or not believe John Kelly, but he would have been far more honorable and believable had he resigned and come out forcefully against Trump years ago.

I will agree with the first sentence. I do not know anything about John Kelly's character, but I do know for a fact that if I had been a retired General and heard Trump make such a remark, I would have immediately disassociated myself from Trump and gone immediately to the media.
If for some reason, I let that remark slide, I would have later resigned as Chief of Staff and hit all the media outlets stating my concerns about Trump being a fascist.
Kelly sat on his fascist stuff for years. Why would a man of character do that?

Trump may have said what is alleged ?, but Kelly left the White House January 2019. He kept his mouth closed for the remaining 2 years of Trump's term and for years later. Some guardrail he was.
Kelly as a retired 4 star general had nothing to lose, yet kept quiet as a mouse until fairly recently.
Trump is definitely not a man of character, but I wouldn't put Kelly on a pedestal either.
The facts are that Trump a very flawed man and candidate beat Harris decisively which shows how disenchanted Americans were with the Biden-Harris administration.
Biden should never had run again, but his ego and the liars in the Administration and the media who told us he was just fine are responsible for this election outcome.
