Father - US Navy - 1944 & 1945; His football ability kept him from going over seas as the Commander of his base wanted Dad on the base football team. He ended up guarding German prisoners at the Naval base in Norfolk, VA. We still have a letter from a German prisoner that wrote to Dad after the war telling Dad how much he appreciated the kindness that Dad had shown to him while in prison.

Dad was a Shrine Bowl player from Spartanburg High School and had been offered by Frank Howard. But he got drafted before finishing high school. Howard held his scholarship and made good on it when the war ended. Dad played on the undefeated '48 Gator Bowl team and played '47-'49. Clemson Alum in 1950;

Dad finished his earthly life in 2003 at 76. I miss him but still remember all the Fall Saturdays as a kid going to Death Valley with him to watch the Tigers.

Thank you Dad and to all who served or are currently serving. You all are heroes.

Dad served in the Korean Conflict stationed on the island of Okinawa, tells stories of going down the mountain every day to get water and back up to the top. Said it was a tough outpost.
During Vietnam-Nam war he was stationed at Tan-Sa-Nhut (?) and Camrahn Bay. His outfit was shelled heavily during the advance on Saigon but they held strong and kept our planes in the skies.
Dad has some problems that may be related to Agent Orange and injuries and effects from his war experience that have had long lasting impacts on his health but he's always been a strong man of faith in God and is still a cheerful, kind, and respected man. He'll turn 81 this month and I'm so grateful and proud to be his son.

Father - Clemson "rat" in the late '40s then drafted for Korean War. Went to OCS and served in combat as an infantry platoon leader in the 25th Infantry Division (Co M, Wolfhound Regiment) from '52 - '53. Came back home to SC and raised a family of Clemson fans. Died in 1994 to liver cancer.

Me - Clemson Army ROTC from 1984 to 1988. Been on active duty with the Army since graduating Clemson in 1988 until the present. Will retire as a COL in six months with 27 years of service. Been all over the world including two combat tours in Iraq with the 101st Airborne. I've enjoyed my time in the Army but am definitely looking forward to retirement and having a "normal" life.

Do you know the registration number of Aphrodite 9, and was it a B-17 or B-24????

Re: ROLL CALL OF CLEMSON MILITARY CONNECTIONS:

Nov 12, 2014, 9:52 AM

I'm not aware of any details. Two things I know are

1) Dad lives at Clemson Downs and is happy to talk. I've never heard him state B-24, so I presume it was a B-17.

2) Googling "Aphrodite" "Garvin" "Kennedy" gets a document that is long and old ... obviously a manual typewriter document ... that lists dad as Noel M. Garvin, not Noel E. Garvin. That document lists every Aphrodite mission. "Kennedy" was Joseph. Dad knew him but he was Navy and "only" the former ambassador's son at that time, so no genuflecting ... all the pilots were considered special and Joe was apparently just one more special pilot.

My dad was a Major in the USAF - he flew O-2's in Veitnam and B-52s later. He died in 1983 at the age of 37; 30 years later, we finally discovered what most likely was his cause of death - hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, probably the same thing that killed Gaines Adams.

My brother just retired as a Lt. Col in the USAF. He flew C-21s a few years and then C-130s. He was stationed in the middle east several times to support missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. (He was medically retired in June due to being diagnosed with apic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at the age of 38, a version of what most likely killed my dad; he now has an implanted defibrulator that should keep him kicking for quite some time!) :)

2 of my cousins were in the USAF as well as 2 of my uncles, and my grandpa.

At Clemson, many of my friends were in AFROTC, so they are all over the country serving today!
