Reminder to anyone here that gets caught in a rip current. 2 things to do if you want to guarantee to be safe.
1. Don't fight it. Let it it pull you out to sea a bit. It ends and doesn't go that far. People fight it to get to shore drown.
2. How to get out of one and its easy. Swim sideways out of the rip and not towards the shore. They are narrow and you can swim sideways as it pulls you out and you will be out of it. Don't try to fight it to get to shore. Even a world class swimmer couldn't do it. Go sideways. Make sure your kids know those things too.
I grew up and have dealt with them my whole life. We use to laugh when we were in one, because we knew how to get out. Its easy as long as you stay calm do those 2 things above.
I only post this because we hear about these tragic deaths each Summer. 2 big ones this week.

A method that has always served me well…I don’t go in the ocean…or at least no farther than I can wade.
I have broken this rule for snorkeling in Hawaii and Caribbean however…

I do the same.. Only wade unless snorkeling in beautiful clear water.

All very good and appreciated. An additional thought: this is all verbal advice, which is easy to dispense; but there ought to even be a sort of actual training class offered on this in some sort of wave poo. Actual training and simulation of conditions, as is done in many other situations, seems to be the key - not just verbal descriptions of what to do. Imagine in the schools on active shooter drills, or in firehouses with firemen, just giving out verbal instructions on what to do. Not really enough. Simulations of conditions are possible, to a degree. Just wondering if this is something someone might come up with.

They could have signs explaining it too. Its not that complicated. Its just counter-intuitive to not want to fight it and get back to land. The deep ocean scares people, so they fight to get back not realizing to go sideways. Simple signs here and there could explain that I believe.

Beach. They'd also posted flags in areas with bad rip currents. All beaches would benefit from explanatory signs.

Problem is that people don't know what to do so it is not easy
I saved a guy in the Dominican Republic while I was on vacation
The guy would have drowned

folks are not strong swimmers. If you’re only semi-comfortable anyway, you would definitely panic when getting pulled away from shore.

Rips also commonly don’t pull exactly straight out. There’s usually a bit of an angle to them so when you swim parallel to the shore, you also want to pick the parallel direction that is “going with the flow” so to speak.
Unfortunately they can be nasty. Even swimming parallel, you might have quite a fight.

They are straight enough out generally and either way they are headed out and you swim to the side. The same concept. I have been in the worst in the world. Very very rarely would someone be in for much of a fight as far as getting out of it. They may get sucked out further than they want at worst generally speaking and have a longer swim back. I have never had a problem. Its simple.

I saw an interview with a volunteer life guard where he died the other day. Apparently those riptides aren't your average riptides. Some very dangerous waters.
