I worked as a counselor at his basketball camp at Davidson one summer. He was quite a character.

I always like Lefty, as down inside he was really a good man.

a great coach and legend of the ACC. RIP...

Came close to be the HC at Clemson when at Davidson, but had more interest in the Maryland job.

Oh, what have might have been...

Was in the old Charlotte Coliseum with Lefty coaching Davidson against Bones McKinney coaching Wake Forest. 2 coaching characters for sure.

At his introductory presser Lefty said Maryland, "has the potential to be the UCLA of the East Coast or I wouldn’t be here." Wonder what Dean Smith and Norm Sloan thought about this? :)

I remember sitting behind him at Littlejohn.

during my ‘72-‘76 stint at Clemson when they had metal bleachers on the floor right behind the team benches. Stand in line-first come, first serve. We students had a lot of “good natured” interaction with him only being maybe 8-10 feet away. He was a fun guy to razz and was a good sport about it.

I recall they had John Lucas, Tom McMillan, Len Elmore, Mo Howard, and a guy with big curly red hair we called Bozo the Clown (O’Brien?). We were hitting them with Stan Rome, Skip Wise (1 year), Tree Rollins, and a host of others. Absolute slugfests. RIP Lefty.

Thanks for the post, CaryTig. Those metal bleachers were where we “Rabble Rousers” sat that I mentioned in another post. We gave Lefty all kinds of he77 (ditto every other coach and opponent).

I got to meet him many years later when he recruited a HS player I knew. He laughed about how the Clemson crowd “hated” him. He considered it an honor of sorts but I told him we still had great respect for him, which he knew.

Hate to hear of his passing. He added a lot of color and “character” to the game.

That '74 ACC tourny final was probably the best NCAA game ever

and Maryland was probably the best team ever left out of the NCAA tournament. I think it was why the NCAA expanded the tournament with at large bids.

A few years ago went to a Davidson game and they happened to be honoring some past players like Fred Hetzel and Lefty was there. At half time went downstairs to the concession area. On the way back up the stairs, met him coming down. Said, hey Lefty miss seeing you in Littlejohn. All he said was, yeah right!! Rest in Peace Coach.
