Dang, that sucks. I grew up in Florence and Cale was from Sardis outside Timmonsville. He drove wide open and was fearless, but was not as crafty as Petty or Pearson who drove more strategically.

He was friends with my dad’s friend and I had quite the experience rocketing on Santee in Cale’s boat with Cale at the helm when I was a kid. He operated a boat the same way he raced- wide open! I was thrilled, my dad, not so much.

Nice man who was actually recruited to play for Frank Howard but chose to get into racing.
