But he cannot be so stupid as to realize he “let off the gas” against SCU only to do it again a week later? Plus, the fact that the “Clemson offense” has been known to let off the gas for a decade and Pre-Riley in big games seems to suggest Riley was directing his comment at Dabo and protecting himself the best way he could do it - through the media.
Hopefully, the comment works and suggests the offense will not “let off the gas” if it has the opportunity this Saturday.

In order to let off the gas we are going to need gas in the tank

And with zero running game, I’m doubtful we’ll have gas to burn. Hope I am proven wrong Saturday.
Overall, as for Riley, I have to think his coming here hasn’t helped his career trajectory. He should have been crystal clear with his boss, Dabo, about the situation he was asserting himself into in regards to running the offense. If he didn’t, that’s on him. But ultimately our offensive performance is his to bear. His numbers look improved this year, but nothing compared to his tenure at TCU. And at this point, to anyone with a brain, he looks as if he doesn’t know how to finish a game. And that’s totally his fault if in fact Dabo is responsible for that.

AT TCU, Riley wasn't "THE" guy

Sonny Dikes is an offensive wizard and drives that race car, Riley was his assistant. Of course Riley effectively leveraged that into his big hire at Clemson. I think he is a very good OC but not the golden child some believe. Give him several more growth years and he may get there, but too early to justify $2M/year.
Now that's just my opinion.

Agreed. Was going to mention the same. Sonny Dykes was perhaps the key.

I often wonder how Streeter would have done with a mature Klubnick. Streets tenure was hurt by a bad DJ and a young Cade Klubnick.

Statistically Streeter got more out of DJU than any other coach did at his other stops. He had to dumb down the offense and greatly limit play calling to what DJU could execute. The one game he got to coach Cade, he lit it up. Streeter was not the problem.

Riley came to Clemson for the same reason Brent Venables did.

You must be one of those numb skulls who lack basic comprehension on what’s happening in a football game. People were ticked off about useless screen passes, not attacking the middle of the field, and “playing scared” under Tony Elliot. They were ticked off about the same under Brandon Streeter. Lo and behold…now people are angry at Riley for the same exact thing. I hope I don’t have to enlighten you as to what a “common denominator” is. If you weren’t such a brown nosing sycophant you’d easily be able to figure out why the offense stalls out so often and for years now.

Doubt it was directed towards Dabo and highly doubt Riley isn't calling his own plays. This is who Riley is.

Rileys comments re stagnant Q4 offense vs S.Carolina & SMU is just coachspeak -

Riley’s not going to blame it on our players for failing to execute in the 4th Qtrs vs S.Carolina and SMU. Therefore, he gives a coachspeak cliche to feed to the reporter.
Against S.Carolina, Riley had called for the kill-shot on that first down comfortably deep in S.Carolina territory with that double reverse play that went FUBAR. Had the FB version of the Three Stooges skit not happened when CK2 tripped on Linthicum’s leg …then pitched the ball in an awkward place for Mafah to corral / catch it … then for Mafah to try to pitch the ball as he was falling to the ground (aka the ‘fumble’), then this might have been a lethal play. Whatever we want to make of the call, it was not ‘letting off the gas.’
A series or two later, on 2nd and 9 -or- 2nd and 10, CK2 threw a short out pattern (ball had to travel a long way) to Wesco that was caught for a near 1st down, but then very belatedly overturned. This long throw for a not-long distance down field is not the kind of thing that could be mistaken for ‘letting off the gas.’
On another 4th Qtr series, we were facing a 3rd and short deep in our territory; the call was that slant route to Wesco instead of trying to grind it forward for a first down. CK2 missed the pass. Had he not missed, Wesco had an 80 yard TD catch in his pocket. Ladies and gentlemen, this is not ‘letting off the gas.’
I won’t keep on and in by referring to the SMU game. You all get the point.

Do you ever wonder what would happen to interviews with coaches if coach-speak was not allowed?

3 guys on an FSU website do a commentary on "Coach Speak" where they play clips of coaches press conferences and then good naturedly laugh at the ridiculousness of the comments.

It was a shot at Dabo, no doubt. No way Riley shares this desire to keep the game in doubt. No OC would ever want to put the offense in Park unless the game was completely out of reach.

I have another cool story for you, Bro. The home team is moving the ball up and down the field with a wide open offense, though not fully taking advantage of scoring opportunities. But the D is keeping them in the game with some key turnovers vs their arch rival who was gifted a 1 point win last time in the home stadium when the home offense went flat allowing a comeback loss. They get to a 14-7 lead in the 3rd quarter and have numerous possessions to get up two scores and likely put the game away, including a short field after a failed onside kick. But due to absolutely genius level mastery of defensive adjustments, the opponent forces yet another three and out and goes on to take (or be gifted) the lead. But Lo and Behold, faced with suddenly being behind in a game they should have already won, they miraculously remember the playbook goes past Page One and march the ball right down the field! To their credit they do realize going into OT would mean having to call plays past Page One, which is tiring, so they try to win it here/now. Unfortunately they throw an INT and seal a loss that could have been a win.

Our offense disappeared in the 2H at Pitt as well. Are we not well conditioned?
