Problems with baseball as I see it [1] Jack Leggett

recruits and plays small ball in a big ball world.Remember last time we had any power top to bottom?I dont

and anyone that pays attention would know that. There aren't a dozen players in all of D1 with more than 15 home runs.

Re: It isn't a "big ball world"...

Jun 2, 2013, 6:39 PM

True, but it's not necessarily about home runs.
The coots are accustomed to being able to drive the ball in the gaps, and advancing runners, not hitting into double plays ,or being able to advance runners with less than two outs.

played for a third in the last 3 years.

Beating your rival 2 times in a row (on two separate occasions) in Omaha when they only needed to win one to advance to the finals is icing on the cake.

looks like our small ball sucks too

every year. Do you ever wonder why they continue to beat us. That long ball can be very good to you especially when you have someone on base. I know that you and Jack would rather bunt and run yourselves out of an inning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

About bunting...

Jun 2, 2013, 6:50 PM

Today Liberty had runners on first and second with nobody out. Toman chose to have the batter swing away instead of bunting the runners over. The batter struck out and the next guy hit into a double play. If they had sacrificed the runners over instead of the strikeout, then the ground ball to the right side would have scored a run and put another runner at third.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: About bunting...

Jun 2, 2013, 6:59 PM

Big whoop. We did not execute the sacrifice well in the final 8 games. We certainly have not hit well with runners in scoring position.
Personally, don't give a rat's behind about Liberty's strategy.
Do care that... all season long... against good competition... the Tigers have not clutch hit.
During that nice stretch run at the end of the season, we beat up on no one that made the tourney.
This simply was a snake bit team that generally could not muster a hit in a critical time.
In case you weren't paying attention... that was admitted during the final post game interviews.
Unfortunately, me... a guy that likes Jack a lot... is beginning to see this as a recurring theme... along with bad base running fundamentals and fielding problems.

Toman got the best of Jack Leggett both times.

Jun 2, 2013, 6:35 PM

That team with Khalil Greene and Johnson had a lot of power. Hard to belive we went from that team to this team.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually it didn't...

Jun 2, 2013, 6:38 PM

three guys had a lot of power, the rest of the lineup, not so much. And the days of 25 home run seasons are over thanks to the bats.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Actually it didn't...

Jun 2, 2013, 6:41 PM

In 50+ game season you could give Greene a wooden bat at the college level and he would hit 20+ homers with ease.

but you are right the bat has effected the college game. Maybe S&C programs need to step it up. Major leaguers seem not to have an issue hitting with wooden bats.

Jun 2, 2013, 6:40 PM [ in reply to Re: Problems with baseball as I see it [1] Jack Leggett ]

bat change makes that comparison invalid. totally different world now

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Next season...

Jun 2, 2013, 6:58 PM

college ball will begin using the more tightly wound minor league ball and the game will be more exciting. The bat change hurt the game but a harder ball will correct the screw up. imo

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know that that change is official yet...

Jun 2, 2013, 7:01 PM

and Jack Leggett has led the charge to make that change.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't know that that change is official yet...

Jun 2, 2013, 7:06 PM

I thought Jack wanted to move the plate up!! the dawgs were about the worst team in the SEc and they came to our place and hit 3 shots!!it is not the fences but THE HITTERS.
those LITTLE SLAP hitters just can`1t get it done.. recruit some bigger guys and we will be OK

Jun 2, 2013, 7:07 PM [ in reply to I don't know that that change is official yet... ]

It hasn't been ruled on as yet but it will happen I think. If we can bring in a top notch pitcher we will be o.k. I happen to know of two here in N.C. who will join Clemson if MLB doesn't interfere so we will be better.

Re: Problems with baseball as I see it [1] Jack Leggett

Jun 2, 2013, 7:18 PM

The small ball thing is bad enough. But not being able to pitch, run the bases or play defense amplifies that we have no power.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Problems with baseball as I see it [1] Jack Leggett

Jun 2, 2013, 7:30 PM

Why don't you do some research on team ERA in the last 10 years? You will see Pepicelli' numbers are better then Sully and Bunn's. Start with facts when you post.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re:Sully is the biggest joke on the team. Obviously Corbin

Jun 2, 2013, 7:48 PM

and Kevin must be pushing the right button===most of the time anyway.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re:Sully is the biggest joke on the team. Obviously Corbin

Jun 2, 2013, 8:03 PM

My point was our team ERA has been top 25 two of the four years Pepicelli has been here. He is obsessed with the pitching coach when it is obvious our hitting has killed us the last three years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re It us both. If pitching is such a big part of baseball

Jun 2, 2013, 8:25 PM

then you need to devote more time to it. It is pitiful when you have no more lefthanders than wit do---one of which throws only two to four pitches when brought in .

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It might be time to become a bit obsessed honestly.

Jun 2, 2013, 8:24 PM

It is difficult to watch your primary rival dominate in state recruiting. I know you are a great fan and I mean no disrespect, but baseball used to be our solid number two sport. I just want us to at least be consistently in the top four of our league, and to me that is not unreasonable.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It might be time to become a bit obsessed honestly.

Jun 2, 2013, 8:55 PM

I feel like Jack Leggett has had consistently good teams at Clemson. (and I think that is a good start)

However, if Clemson baseball's standard is best, (which I feel it should be) then I think the athletic department needs to consider some new ideas to improve recruiting.

These could include (but not be limited to) a coaching change as well
as facility improvements.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Re: It might be time to become a bit obsessed honestly.

Jun 2, 2013, 9:24 PM

Agreed. Both are in order if we want much better than what we are seeing now. I think we will see one, and possibly both. We have too great an opportunity to do otherwise - just my opinion. :)
