the Mx. version of Knight and Dabo

Legend has it that the recently deceased HOF BBall Coach Bobby Knight met his untimely demise as Head Coach at Indiana University for the mere insult of being addressed unkindly.

Seems there was some punk kid student who, clearly trying to be “cool” or “snarky” or whatever the younger idiots of the world call “disrespectful” these days, happened upon Knight as he was walking by a University student function. The kid, no doubt, puffed out his chest, and called out, “Knight!” as the Coach brushed past. In legend, the response was immediate and straightforward. Coach Knight apparently took personal umbrage in the extreme at not being addressed in a way that included the proper honorific; either “Mr.” or “Coach” being presumably satisfactory, if even a solitary “Sir” could not be accomplished by the malcontent kid for some reason.

And so, it was that in the next 10 seconds that Knight’s HOF, but tumultuous, career at Indiana came to a final close, as he then allegedly grabbed the young man around the shirt collar with both hands and proceeded to rattle his cage a bit. Likely some various nuts and bolts fell out of the imbecile’s brain as result. That the young man had had a previous tete-a-tete with Knight mattered not by this time. That Knight’s personal code demanded respect first and foremost for all, mattered not either.

Knight was soon gone from IU and for good. For their part, the power brokers at Indiana U., none of whom valued athletic success more than their own personal heady influence on campus, undoubtedly rejoiced with gleeful choruses of “The King is Dead; long live the King”.

In the 29 years previous to Knight’s beheading, Hoosier U. won 11 B1G titles, went to the NCAA 24 separate times (83% of the time), and took down 3 Natties. Indeed, Knight’s 1976 IU team is the very last team to go Undefeated for a full year on the way to a Basketball NCAA Championship. Apparently, March hasn’t been quite as Mad as some would proclaim.

Since that point 22 seasons ago, it’s interesting to note that IU has only won 3 Big Ten Championships, and their NCAA appearances have dropped to a rate of 55%. They’ve come away with less hardware there too as they have literally not a single NCAA Title in the interim.

The fall from Basketball Elite status seems a large price to pay for the want of a single “Sir”.

What’s even worse, is that Knight’s career winning % of .735 has been approached at IU by only one of his successors. Kelvin Sampson lasted something short of three years at Indiana, carving out a marginally better .741 win rate. But as in his tenures at Oklahoma, and later, Houston, Sampson ran afoul of the NCAA, this time for impermissible phone calls to recruits (LOFL), and so was subsequently let go by IU. For his part, Knight had never even been investigated by the NCAA during his tenure as Head Coach, mush less penalized.

...for want of a single “Sir”.

I find this interesting in large part because of the current Social Mafia roaming the streets of America, and demanding to be identified by their preferred honorific, or “pronoun”, even as such in some cases would hardly be obvious to any casual bystander. It seems, that in their minds, the world owes them the debt of being addressed in a certain fashion even though they weren’t addressed initially as such by Mother Nature herself.

And if that weren’t enough, the US Senate Judiciary Committee recently reviewed a Magistrate Judge, as nominated for District position, who had previously issued firm Order in his Court that all persons entering said Court had to pre-emptively announce their preferred pronouns. It was bad enough that the nominee lied to the Senate Committee by saying the instruction was voluntary, even as it had been promulgated as a Formal Order of the Court. Worse; the Judge’s instructed acceptable terms included only “Ms.”, “Mr.”, or “Mx.”. There was no specific noting of “Mrs.” or “Miss” as acceptable terms.

So, what then are the rest of us to do? The estimable HOF Coach Knight asked for a simple “Sir”, and was rebuked in the extreme. Even decades later at his passing, and so with threat of reprisal obviously past, many (including those on TNET) took the opportunity to denigrate his name and accomplishments just one more final time for good measure.

This while oddly, others in society go so far as to turn science and Nature completely on its head. Instead of correction, though, they are placated to the point that they seem to wield the threat of even criminal action in retort.

Given this absurdly ridiculous dichotomy, it should be clear that in the dystopian future on our near horizon, there won’t even be reasonable effort given by certain politicos to provide for even-handed respect to all. Instead of respect, Alice-in-Wonderland politics will command. Indeed, when initially addressing someone in the future, one would no doubt be better off to simply ask for the other’s Political Affiliation ID Card, rather than offering even the barest “pardon moi”. George Orwell would be so proud.

So, it should not have surprised me earlier today, when one of the more insanely disrespectful and inflammatory among the TNET Board came out with another snotty post, addressing our own HOF Football Coach as “Dabs”. I don’t know if that is the person’s “Mx.” version of “Dabo”, or if the numskull just crossed an “O” with an “S”, those letters being so close to each other on the keyboard and all. It also did not surprise me when no one from the Moderators’ cadre made any effort to fix things.

In any event, what’s clear is that Dabo, being on the hot seat now with the Board, is much, much worse a person than just a .500 Football Coach in a “fire me midseason or not at all” industry. No, he’s White, Male, Christian, respectfully empathetic, and a 2-time National Champ. More so, beyond even Outspoken, he’s immediately Nationally-recognized and Impactful to boot.

None of that could ever sit well with those inherently political fools, like Bob Knight’s Indiana University Administration, who are worried only about their own personal Status in the world, or even just their own seat at the end of the Clemson Basketball Bench.

The difference being Coach Knight had earned the right whereas the latest batch of worthless pink- or blue-haired dweebs have not.

Therefore they MUST be respected. Because otherwise would be literal violence.

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Woody Hayes was to the OSU world until he went after a Clemson player on the sidelines. .. only one God, neither Knight nor Hayes came close though both seemed to think so.

That's a big difference in a world where he/she/it rules the day in a Federal Court.

Knight was booted from Indiana for choking a player on the court during practice. It was captured on video and Indiana asked him to resign. When he refused they gave him the boot. Although a great basketball coach, he was a bully and the temper of a madman. He thought he was irreplaceable then learned he wasn’t.

Knight didn’t think he could be fired. In fact, some suggest that he held the IU Admin in such contempt that he was literally challenging them to do so just so they would prove how arrogant they were. I think he won that point.

You’re also wrong on your timeline. He was fired well after the choking incident.

No. 2, I won’t defend universally his temper or having put his hands on someone. What I will say is that he was trapped at IU, in a place that he loved but also a place where he was literally under attack daily. I don’t know that his fits of anger were universally caused by this situation, but his lashing out is very endemic of someone being trapped.

More so, what I know is that the duplicity of Liberals in society and in University Admins is well shown by what I and Tigerswimmer have written. Liberals flaunt their control over things by twisting both natural law and the language that goes with it. They demand respect by reversing the meaning of words. Knight chose to demand respect as well and was crucified for it.

Liberals have no intent of being respectful of the rights of others.

Wood be beneficial to type it and learn more right. Then you could be like Denzel Washington in The Book of Eli movie where he remembered the whole Bible and quoted it to someone to rewrite it.

He was unique.
Here is a fun tale I remember.

He had Larry Bird in a dorm on Campus, but Bird felt out of place as he did not have the clothes to fit in. He bailed back to French Lick.

Knight was ahead of his day as to basketball, but lacked control of himself. Maybe that is what made him great.

He was guilty of physically laying hands on his players multiple times. If the incident you described is true he was also guilty of assaulting the student. That in and of itself was sufficient reason for his firing. Trying to tie this into the ridiculous "proper" pronoun nonsense is a stretch of the facts as well as a non sequitur.

to lay hands on a kid.

That doesn’t make it appropriate for a Coach.

But it’s also not appropriate to hold someone responsible for 2020’s values when they were raised in the 1950’s.

As to the other ways Liberals made a patsy out of Knight, some I’ve written above and won’t repeat.

Baby boomer here and big fan of Coach Bob Knight. However, being addressed by your last name is not just cause for being physically accosted . I have seen the episode of Knight choking his player and have heard about his encounter with the student on campus. Knight is luckily he didn’t receive a beat down.

Knight is a tough case - you can't defend him universally

I'm not even sure he can be understood appropriately - highly intelligent but also highly instinctive when it came to human nature.

I'll only say that if you were a HOF Coach on a campus you had served for almost 30 years, you might feel differently about being called by your last name only. It also didn't help that, in his view, he was already being railroaded by the IU Admin.

And again, remember that he did not "start" the "last name incident"...

Thanks for the response.

If you haven't read the Jay Bilas article on Knight at ESPN, you should. I don't really care for Bilas, but this article was well measured, I think.
