Regardless of the outcome, as an outsider...

Jun 14, 2012, 9:05 AM

...I have newfound respect for Clemson and will be cheering for you guys.

As a Big 12 guy, I will admit...didn't know a whole lot about Clemson before this whole saga. After reading this board and others and educating myself a bit on the net, I am blown away. Death Valley, Howard's Rock...just the immense loyalty that exists in this small purely college town that packs 80,000 in on gamedays...fans that are passionate and knowledgable yet overwhelmingly friendly and that stay to the end even in losing situations. And unlike some other places I am familiar with that have a similar reputation, like Nebraska...where Tom Osborne is marketed like your friendly grandpa but rules like a mafioso kingpin...I get the sense at Clemson, no coach or player will ever be greater than the program.

I dare say, even though I haven't experienced it first hand...it really doesn't sound like there could be a better college football gameday experience out there. To me (admitedly, maybe not to the powers that make these decisions) that is the ultimate currency in realignment.

So if you guys come to the Big 12, it will just make our conference that much better...and if you stay in the ACC - I'll be rooting for you to pound your snotty conferencemates into dust.

Doesn't have anything to do with my school - I am an alumn of the University of Kansas. Wish we could replace our old ###### Tigers (who hail from the aptly named "Columbia") with you guys, although at this point I'm not holding my breath.

What are your thoughts on Weiss?

Jun 14, 2012, 11:13 AM

I personally would not be excited about him at all. He's a great x's and o's guy on offense, but his ND defenses were terrible.

Re: What are your thoughts on Weiss?

If you saw our defense last year you would realize it is in fact impossible for a defense to be any worse...that's not a joke, we were seriously 120 out of 120 FBS teams in total defense and scoring defense.

I wasn't keen on it at first but there are a few things going for Weiss:

1) He's fat, thinks highly of himself and is kind of a prick. This is good. After the Turner Gill experiment (nice guy...held the players to zero accountability) - this is what the program needs. After all, the last time we were good, we had a fat prick as our head coach.

2) Immediately gets some attention to the program. Opinion is highly divided (even slanted negatively) towards wise but he's a big name who people know and who's succeeded working in the NFL.

3) Related to #2, he's immediately brought in some transfer talent. I grant you that it is mostly on offense but we need help everywhere. Dayne Crist transfered from Notre Dame, where he was a 5-star tud recruited by Weiss. His success was mixed at ND (many Domers say their new coach Kelly had it out for him and wanted his own guy) but the bottom line is he's a big dude with a gun who knows Weiss' offense inside and out and can step in right away and be effective. He's a legit pro prospect if he can be effective in his one season in Lawrence. Weiss also got Jay Heaps to transfer from BYU....another former 5-star QB prospect who will learn the offense sitting out this season. And local Kansas City 5-star WR recruit Justin McCay is transferring from OU. I throw all these '5-star' guys out there not to say that they are sure things...there is obviously a reason their former teams let them transfer...but they are the kind of projects who have legit talent and may very well pay off and that a lesser known coach without Weiss' credentials probably wouldn't have been able to draw to Lawrence (the QB's for sure anyways).

4) He brough another NFL veteran, former Cowboys head coach Dave Campo, in to be his defensive coordinator. Campo has 3 Super Bowl rings and his NFL resume should appeal to recruits and he should be able to get through to the players.

It's a tough gig here in Lawrence...Mangino and some prior coaches like Glen Mason have proven you can win here but you will always be in the shadow of the basketball team and support can be fairweather at times. Ironically we are the most ACC-like of the Big 12 teams with our basketball tradition, AAU status and percevied lack of support for football in down years (though we love our home in the Big 12 just fine thank you!) - although I would argue there is more latent football potential here than a great majority of ACC schools, witnessed by an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech just 4 years ago.

Happy for you on all counts. Not trying to be Debbie Downer

Jun 14, 2012, 11:43 AM

but we had a guy as DC (yeah, the one who got destroyed by WVU in the OB) with NFL experience, too. Problem was he tried to run an NFL D here and our guys were constantly confused and out of position. It was obvious confusion right up to the snap on practically every play. We hardly ever got off the field on 3rd down. Our BIG hope is BV's D will be way simpler. That, in itself, will be an improvement.

Campo has said he is under no illusions about what he is working with so hopefully that won't be the case here. Step one would be to learn an effective high school defense, let alone college, let alone NFL.

We are all very familiar with Venables here in Big 12 country. He's certainly got the pedigree, being coached up and an assistant for old man Snyder just down the highway from us. My OU friends were kind of split on his effectiveness and most are happy to have Mike Stoops back but seems like a great hire for you guys...young, energetic and was a legit HC candidate for many teams.

Good post. Overall I'd say you're cautiously optimistic about him, which is probably how I'd feel in your position too.

love for & quest of being smash-mouth footballers at Clemson in 1900..before he left after 3 years for Ga Tech since they doubled his salary plus % of gate (unheard of then).

And, remember we've beaten a lot of big-name schools in bowls in the earlier & mid years...like Miami in 50's Orange, Penn St in Citrus, Oklahoma in Citrus which was Barry's lat game coaching, Ohio ST in Woody's last knuckle bender, Nebraska in Orange for NC, Stanford, TCU in first Bluebonnet Bowl with their famous Bob Lilly later of The Cowboys, WVU in Gator with their great QB Major Harris in 1989..and Boston College in 1939 Cotton Bowl with their great coach Frank Leahy who went on to Notre Dame.

Plus, we beat Notre Dame in 1979 there which was DAn Devine's last season...and lost only 7-0 in 1959 to #1 LSU Tigers with their famous Chinese "Gang Tackling" Bandit defensive squad under Paul Dietzel in Sugar Bowl.

Really appreciate your special interest in our TIGERS...and wanting to know more about us (team & fans)..and vice-versa with your favorite team Kansas. Hope you're watch us on TV when we start to smack 'em around more in the future what with the new talent.

Go TiGERs!

Thanks for your post.

There is nothing like Clemson that I have ever been to. We have been tailgating in the same numbered space for 35 years. It is truly like family here. We count the days until the Tigers run down the hill from one season to another.
Just diehard, loyal to the death fans that love Clemson University and our Tigers.

Come on to Death Valley this fall for a game and see for yourself. If you do decide to come, T-mail me and I will tell you where we park. Always glad to have a new tailgater with us.

Come visit us on a Saturday game day!***
