Recruiting questions for the resident experts:

Jan 11, 2014, 9:31 AM

1. We are 15th in both ESPN and Rivals, but 32nd in Scout, why the huge difference in Scout?

2. With all of the early departures for the NFL, which seems to be a national trend this year, I assume we have extra scholarships to give. Do you think we have time to try to land some big ones with the extra scholarships this year, or will they save most of them for next year? We were supposed to be low on scholarchips available this year, but is it too late to take advantage of the attrition?

3. Who are the names we are still going after and what schools are they down to?

4. What are the big campus visit weekends in January going to be?

Thanks!

I can try

1. Scout ranks quantity over quality.

2. Coaches had an idea of what players were thinking and planned for it. Now I still believe we have 2 maybe three spots that were a question until they announced (breeland/Bryant) so coaches will try to fill them. Don't expect us to reach on talent we never just take someone for a body.

3. T. Thompson - clemson leads ncst and osu

Andrew Williams- clemson trails auburn

Cory Tomas - tenn commit is visiting

Jc Jackson may be late push

4. Jan 17th is clemson's big weekend

don't really have a lot up in the air regarding big headline commit battles like in years past.

As to the recruiting sites remember, all recruits lose their stars as soon as they commit and don't earn any more till they prove it on the field of play!
As to openings for new commits, by my count with Beasley staying for senor year, we have 86 players on scholarship counting the 18 2014 commits. Two of those commits may be Prep school prospects. If so we will be sitting at 84 scholarships.
Of those , we may well have 2 future transfers! Leaving us at 82. Best case we maybe able to get 3 more recruits. Their number of stars who knows!

to add to the Scout thing

Scout does cumulative points to rank their classes -- class of 29 3 stars will beat a much better class of 15 3/4/5 stars even though it shouldn't. Stable programs should only be bringing in 17-20 recruits a year which is what we've reached. There are actually 5 classes on a roster at a time. RS FR, FR/RS So, So/RS JR), JR(RS SR), SR--- if you signed 25 every year-- do the math. Rivals does a much better job(though not perfect) as they only count the top 20 rated guys in computing rankings-- most teams have 20 guys each year due to attrition. All the rankings should be done by avg Star ratings IMO to eliminate the fluctuation in class size. You can sort the Scout rankings like this and I believe we are 20 -- meanwhile FSU with a class size of 29 drops to 11th from 4th when you do this. In other words, not a big difference in the caliber of player. Coots because of their small class this year will also struggle to rank high but they are bringing in some quality players as well. Remember another big component the rankings don't account for which is NEED.

I just looked at what you are talking about and both CU's class and SCAR's class move up if you do it by average stars. Question - why is the number of recruits different on the two sites. For instance, SCAR shows only 13 on Scout but 16 on Rivals. I don't know what recruits are missing but if more are added to the Scout average I assume SCAR's ranking would actually go down.

to the extent that recruiting rankings matter at all, I would say that scout and espn both are next to worthless (even if this time espn seems to have the Tigers about right).

If you are really interested in the rankings i would stick to 247 and rivals. They seem to be the best by far. Personally I like 247. It currently has the Tigers at 16 and SC at 28 with nearly identical average star ratings.

I would not be concerned at all with scout's rating.
