Realistic Observations - FSU game & Going Forward...

Sep 25, 2012, 10:52 AM

Realistic Observations from the FSU game, and going forward this season:

1) There has never been a more electric offense to watch at Clemson than the current one. Entertaining, fun, and explosive. O-line was a huge concern coming into this season. While they are not a great unit, this offense is able to disguise any inabilities they might have. This is a top 5 offense in the country.

2) There may have never been a more pitiful defense to watch at Clemson than the current one. Not sure we could have stopped a team of Labradoodle's Saturday night. Here are some stats to chew on:
- Last 12 games - giving up 32.91 pts./game
- Opponents averaging 442.50 yds/game in 2012
- Giving up 206.5 yds rushing/game in 2012
- Avg. 1 sack per game in 2012

Yes the secondary is mediocre. But it starts with the down four. Goodman has played 186 snaps (23 more than any other down lineman). He has 10 tackles in 4 games with no sacks. Go ahead and let the young guys get snaps. I'm not for overlooking upperclassmen. I just think unproductive upperclassmen slow the development of young potential. We need to keep guys off the LB's.

There are two sacks from D-Linemen so far this year (1 for Williams; 1 for Beasley).

3) Everything defensively was hard to watch Saturday night...kickoff coverage, angles, tackling, pass coverage...you name it. How many five yard inside curls were thrown with nobody in sight to make a tackle after the catch? Or running backs coming out of the backfield with nobody near them? Geez we had 8 in coverage most the night! I have never seen a defense at CU consistently play with such little resistance.

4) Can we play 13 on defense against Tech in two weeks? While that one will be hard to watch, I'm not so sure that BC doesn't hang at least 28 on us. They did it to Miami. As good as the offense is, I hate that they have to score on almost every possession to keep us in games.

5) The next three weeks will be telling. It will take two-three years to fix this defense talent wise. Stinks that by then we will be without Sammy, Nuke, etc., and potentially Coach Morris.

Either way - Go TIGERS. I'm pulling for you, and I hope you can start playing defense like its meant to be played. TACKLE! WRAP UP! HIT!

GO TIGERS

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you tho I don't think it

will take 2-3 years to fix the D. We're in a very similar spot to where FSU was last year as far as depth and playing time, tho the secondary could be our most serious caveat.

No, we are not similar to last year's FSU D.

I wish we were. FSU was much better last year than Clemson is this year. FSU gave up an avg. of 82.69 rushing yards per game last year, and 192 passing yards per game for an average of 275 total yards a game. Clemson (through four games) is averaging twice that much. We have a lot farther to go than they do. But to be fair, our offense is much better than theirs, so we don't need the D to be as good as FSU's, just competent.

IMHO, it's also tough to get consistent pressure up front when the defense is back on the field as soon as they come off. Fast, explosive offenses are fun and can be very effective. But there's a fine line to balance there otherwise the defense is going to be gassed the whole game. Just my two cents.
