Realistic expectations for next football season.

Jan 14, 2016, 7:00 AM

My hopes are still high because we have DW #4 under center. Id give anything to have a repeat of this season. And go win it all. But the defense takes a big hit especially in the secondary. I could see us having to outscore opponents. We may have to score 50 to win some games. My realistic expectations is to go 12 and 0 however it wouldn't surprise me if we lose one and go 11-1 just simply because of the hit on defense.

Jan 14, 2016, 7:01 AM

Venables did it once I'm sure he can do it again, it may not be a top 10 defense but I'm positive it will be enough to get the job done.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The run defense and pass rush will be strong regardless

Jan 14, 2016, 7:05 AM

That's 75% of the battle right there. Look at Michigan State's defense. They lost only once in the regular season and their secondary was one of the worst in the nation.

dbs will be fine as long as they dont have to cover # 88. I think all the guys who wouldnt cover him are leaving anyway. :)

we should be good to go, get past FSU on the road and we are looking at another ACC title game, probably against a much improved Miami Team. I am not so worried about this defense, we have numbers, we just need to coach up the secondary. Our Dline will probably be as good or likely better by the second half of the season. Our back-ups got a lot of reps this year and I just don't see many wasted scholarships on this roster. I also believe we also have the green light to take a Juco or two, I would not be surprised to see this.

Realistic expectations for next football season 11-1

Jan 14, 2016, 7:59 AM

11-1 or 12-0 regular season is my expectation. FSU will be a challenge and with an away game at Auburn to open the year .... you never know.

Auburn is like a box of chocolates ......

Auburn will be a great test. They have as much talent as any team in the nation. Should be a good game and a good test for our D. I say we roll our O cannot be stopped.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With DW4, improved o-line, Williams, Gallman, Leggett and...

Jan 14, 2016, 8:26 AM

tons of other offensive weapons, our O will pick any defense apart. Our d-line will be very solid. If we could do it in the past year, I don't see why we can't do it again this year. I have confidence in Coach Venables.

Re: Realistic expectations for next football season.

Jan 14, 2016, 8:37 AM

I don't think there is anyone on the schedule beside FSU that has the firepower to stop us unless we have a monumental meltdown and lose a game we have no business losing. We will be double digit favorites in every game except FSU.

They bring back everyone on offense with the caveat that their current starting QB will miss spring practice after getting surgery on a broken ankle. Maguire will get pushed by former 4 stars Cosentino, Francois, and newcomer Henry. If they win the job you will have an unproven, untested QB that is being broken in. If Maguire maintains his spot, sometime in summer will be the first time he is able to realistically work again. Similar to Deshaun but Deshaun is a different player than Maguire.

In other words, our game against FSU will likely be a high scoring affair with both sides having dominant fronts and retooling behind that. However, if anyone thinks that FSU has the firepower to beat Clemson without Clemson making a lot of mistakes, I'll hear you now. I don't think they do and if we can improve to the 70's in rank for special teams we will be fine.

12-0 is certainly possible though, but you'd think realistically, we lose at least one or two.

team won't be extremely good, but just because going undefeated, even with an extremely good team, is just not all that likely. Even if we field another national championship caliber team like we had this year, even if we are favored in every game, our odds of winning every one will be fairly small.

Just for example, we are an early 7pt favorite at Auburn. That probably equates to something like a 70% chance to win the game. Lets be generous though and say we are 75% to win that one. Then assume we are a small favorite at FSU and something like 55%-60% to win that game. Our chances of winning both are around 40%. That's not even taking into account the other 10 or 11 games...

11-1 is much more realistic. Hopefully the 1 loss isn't to FSU, and hopefully a 12-1 ACC champ can get back in to the CFP.

A percent chance of a team winning a football game is dumb. we had less than 50% chance to beat OU and we beat that a$$ and would 10 more times in a row. Don't be an idiot and try to be above everybody. This is football son.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I get it. You think math has no place in sports, but there

Jan 14, 2016, 10:39 AM

are a lot of very wealthy and very intelligent guys (way smarter than myself) that would disagree with you.

We wouldn't beat 10 of out 10 times. I came away from that game definitely feeling like we were the better team, but that still doesn't mean we would win more than like 7 out of 10.

Re: OK, let me ask you something different. NFL kicker, chip

Apr 9, 2021, 2:45 PM

I'm not sayin upsets don't happen. I know we could lose but realistically with DW at QB do you guys really think we lose a game next year. I don't. Y'all can have a negative attitude all day long if you want but that's stupid to think we will lose. Math has plenty of place in sports but sayin who will win a game is opinion. If we went by percent chances we would have been 10-2 at best this year. We had DW that makes a difference and I'm not going to argue with his greatness.

FSU will be good but if you look at the depth chart you will see a lot of Freshmen. While they recruited great, they will have depth issues early in the season.

Auburn is losing some great Defensive players. They do not scare me at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I'm not "scared" of Auburn either, but that doesn't

Jan 14, 2016, 10:24 AM

mean we have better than a 75% chance to beat them. 3-1 favorite is already quite large on the road against a team with plenty of talented players.

Yes Clemson is favored, yes Clemson is likely to win the game, but that does not guarantee that we WILL win the game. The Warriors were way better than the Cavs last year, but Cleveland still managed to win 2 out of 6 games despite the Warriors being the better team and favored in every one of those 6 games. Baseball and basketball play 7 game series because the best team doesn't always win in 1 a game showdown or even a 3 game series. We could be quite a bit better than Auburn next year and still lose that game. It may not be likely, but it is possible, and if we are going to have a discussion about "realistic" expectations, then we should actually try to be realistic about it and account for these possibilities.

I think many people look at these games as absolutes. Either we are going to win (100%) or we are going to lose (0%). The truth is very much in between.

like the Big 12,10, and SEC do. Just watch. Different metrics that are made up out of thin air will apply if we are 12-1. We and other ACC teams are held to a different standard than the other conferences I'm afraid.

Re: Realistic expectations for next football season.

Jan 14, 2016, 9:27 AM

We will be just fine we will have 4/5* players all most at every position and they have to play against the top rated offense next for the spring, summer and fall. Over all getting better each year. We rotate players with two deep. Two deep wise very talented. With 15 games and 80+ plays a game. No drop off with the 1-b. Should be a lot of "or " at every position.

10-2 at worst, 11-1 likely due to personnel losses, but undefeated perhaps. Despite the offensive firepower I feel the secondary and special teams need considerable work. Don't overlook Louisville or Ga.Tech along with FSU or Allbarn as potential losses. There are to many unknowns at this point.
