Not named dany or dabo. For me it would be ken hatfield. He did a good job as coach of the tigers. But alot of people didnt accept him.

Charlie Pell was my favorite. He took over from the mess Red Parker had us in and produced 18 wins from 1977-1978 with Zero losses to SCAR. He put us on the map.

Pell won with players Red Parker recruited, ie Fuller, Butler, Bostics

Fuller, Butler, Bostics, Jim Stuckey, Bubba Brown, Warren Ratchford, Obed, Dwight Clark, Marvin Sims, Randy Scott, Lester Brown, Rich Tuten, Steve Kinney and many more.
I think Red got the shaft myself and Pell got the glory then tucked tail and ran to Florida.

He could never win 10 or the ACC, but he did some good things with the WEZ and starting the focus on facilities improvement. He recruited decent if not lights out; I think his last class in 2008 was top 10. And of course he hired Dabo and the rest is history. While Tommy couldn't lead us to the Promised Land, he set the stage for Dabo to do it.

Good wingman for Dabo. He got the football rolling in the right direction after years of futility. He knew what Clemson needed. Never could really get us over the hump.

Frank Howard. He was still very much part of campus life and lore in the early 80's, and really lived up to his larger than life reputation. Tradition has it that he seconded his own nomination as head coach, and he continued to let everyone know exactly what he thought during all 6 decades he was at Clemson. He was a bit rough around the edges at times, but smart enough to know that just because you came from Bama doesn't mean you ever have to go back!

No Win situation. I think the Virginia game is where I turned against him. We won despite him. Recruiting suffered, but that was due to the lack of backing. Plus he was not innovative at all. He won with Danny's players.

and one reason only, and that was to dial the program back a couple of notches or to decrease the level of performance and enthusiasm the program was experiencing on a national level.

Gotta be Coach Frank Howard. I played for Coach Howard in the 60's. He would have nicknames for various players as well as groups. He would have the first team guys and everyone else he called the Others. I remember we Others painted an O on the front of our helmets. We were the first team to rub his rock at the top of the hill. I remember him telling us if we were not going to give 100% we could not rub his rock.
Coach Howard had a great memory & loved his players. I attended an IPTAY in Columbia in the mid-70's. Coach Howard who was retired at the time, was in attendance. He asked for every boy that played for him to stand up. He knew every ex-player by name & told a short story about them. What a great man!!!

Not to rain on your parade but Ken Hatfield should be on the bottom of the list with 5 or 6 blank spots between him and the next coach above him. I was very close friends with several players at the time and they have zero respect for the guy. I would share some stories that were confirmed by many players but I will not demean coach hatfield any more. On the outside looking in it was probably a decent view but on the inside not a good situation at all.

In my lifetime, I'm going with Bowden. I think he started what Dabo is finishing. He was a breath of fresh air from the 90's. He was unable to get us to the next step like Dabo has but I think he started turning things around.

Hatfield is the most intriguing of Clemson's coaches. I know he was accused of recruiting poorly, but he won 8 games in his last season, with many players he had recruited. I wonder how the situation would have played out if he stayed on as coach for a few years longer, with teams composed of entirely his own players. Would he have had more success than Tommy West?

no one mentioned Banks McFadden.
And even though he wasn't a coach, he was as integral to the Clemson athletic dept as any other individual (save possibly Coach Howard) and thats Herman McGee.

but of course Frank Howard who helped establish & grow IPTAY, personally helped build & mow Memorial Stadium..and took us to some quality bowl games..
and b/c I interviewed him for a Sports article & chatted with years later and learning about his “Frank Howard secretly-inspired Hwy 321 Bypass Construction Plan” involving a modern 4-lane road from G’ville to Tigertown which helped put Clemson on the map.
