Where we are took some time getting here and its not an easy fix these days.....

NIL and the transfer portal have created much more parity in CFB, much like the NFL. Look at the results yesterday and then check the # of transfers that a team "upsetting" another team has on their roster. FSU is the poster child for this but other programs have benefited as well. Not saying that this is the end all solution for our current troubles but we sure could use a WR or couple of OL that we don't have.

I THINK what happened to us is that CFB is still a violent, aggressive game and while Dabo has been an incredible Brand builder and overall program manager, he will never be thought of as a brilliant football tactician. That being said, he was SMART enough to surround himself with coaches who were much better at that than him and also coaches with an EDGE. BV, Jeff Scott, TE, etc were no BS, no coddling coaches and they recruited players who fit that image. They are gone and we have lost that and the players we have recruited are fine, young mem who I'm sure love the Paw journey, riding jet skis on the lake, etc but none of them seem to have the hunger and intensity that many of our prior Tigers possessed.

Can this be "fixed"? Not sure, like I said CFB is a whole different world now, We will have to change the mindset a bit - esp on the OL - and hire some new position coaches who have fire and intensity and recruit those some kind of players. Again, football is a violent aggressive game, esp in the trenches.

Lastly, best be careful here too. Right or wrong Clem football is Dabo Swinney right now. Part of the brand building process. We screw around and run him off and we better have a plan in mind and think long and hard about it. This exact same thing happened with Bowden at FSU and it took them years to get out of the wilderness.

For me - still a fan although I'm going to be more selective with how deep I go in from now on. The ride was INCREDIBLE but as I get older, other things take a bit more precedent. Allowing 18-21 year olds who I do not know personally or a grown man making 10+M dictating my happiness is my own fault

Spot on! Dabo is the CEO, but he depends on the staff and players. The staff and players have changed significantly since 2015-2020 glory run. The recruiting and players have changed now too, especially with NIL & transfer portal. It appears that the post covid period has been tough. We are seeing that now. Dabo is not well suited for these times of player pay, transfers, and more parity.

Last paragraph is the thinking of many Tiger fans. Memories are great, not many teams can have the year-in, year-out success of Bama, Buckeyes, etc.... Dabo took us to new heights, but he doesn't have the desire or ability to keep us there. If we're going to be mediocre, we need to pay our coach a middle of the road salary, not 2nd in the nation.

Quality post, TU, especially for the last part.

Football has always been a violent sport but I do think the mercenary nature of the transfer portal will continue to undercut the advantage Clemson’s culture used to bring in the recruiting process. State of the art facilities are now table stakes. Culture is great if it can attract elite talent. I don’t think we attract elite talent anymore, at least not to the degree we did before. And if we are, our coaching hires are that much worse because they’re making these players worse, a case you could make for some positions like QB.
