We never adjusted our offense to DJ and now

we need to do more roll out and run or throw to take advantage of the blistering speed of Cade. He seems comfortable throwing on the run and this gets receivers open. This was not DJs forte

Case also did well from the pocket yesterday. That TD where he had pressureon the right but climbed the pocket was well-executed. DJ never seemed comfortable doing that.

Agree 110% that Cade is not a natural pocket passer imho, and thrives on the run & gun throw Especially with our Oline.

I am curious as to what offense you think would be a good choice for a QB who bounces a 10 yard pass to a wide open receiver to start a conference championship game? I always pulled for DJ but he was not a serviceable QB so why do fans think the scheme was the issue?

I totally agree… DJ was not a fit at Clemson… he was given every opportunity to succeed and never succeeded. Then after all the nurturing amidst great controversy in the fan base… he throws Dabo under the bus…Wish him luck but don’t miss him at all!

Despite his numerous shortcomings, DJU was clearly our best option to win in 2021 season. No contest. We had no one else.

For 2022, DJU was, at the time when each game was played, our best option for winning each game as it came on our schedule.

Even in the ACC Championship, the arrival of CK2 as an un-scouted change up to DJU midway through Q1 took UNC off guard. CK2 had that terrific first half during UNC.

Does anyone remember that CK2 led us to only one TD in 2nd half of UNC game? His much reduced production in H2 of ACC Championship game was because UNC’s coaching staff made the adjustment. CK2’s limited repertoire (as of late 2022 season) was easy to scout and defend. Always scramble to the right. Fast, but not as fast as he thought he was. Stares down receivers. Poor accuracy on downfield throws. That was CK2 LAST YEAR.

CK2 started 2023 season as our barely better than Hunter Helms option to start 2023 season. I believe that he would have been our starter this year even if DJU had stayed. CK2’s upside … as of TN game … made it worth the risk of playing a not-really-ready CK2 instead of a topped-out DJU in the Duke game. Maybe we would have beaten Duke if DJU had played against Duke. Less likely would it have been that DJU would have outplayed CK2 as of FSU game.

As of yesterday against Syracuse, CK2 is clearly better than DJU was … at his best … during his 3 years with us.

Now, if CK2 quits staring down receivers and making panic throw-away passes when he is on the verge of being sacked (I.e., the near pik-6 passes which he makes every game), then we’ll be in position to win the rest of our games for this year.

Let him drop back and throw. His confidence was completely gone by the ACC Championship game. Our offense had him thinking too much. Just one opinion

3

After that it was all downhill. His performance against the coots last year was a disgrace and a disaster. We would have been better keeping Chase Brice as our starter and leaving DJU out west where he belongs.

You have somewhat of a valid point. Dabo demanded that Trevor Lawrence and DJ run an offense designed for Kelly Bryant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The staff 100% adjusted the offense to DJ, they "dumbed"...

14

Oct 1, 2023, 10:35 AM

it down as they did for KB2.

In 2021, Dabo and Elliott both took responsibility for one of DJ's interceptions - DJ was at best an automaton and his mechanical play showed it.

The job the staff did with the team to end 2021 and then to start 2022 was terrific, and then DJ lost his way again in the Cuse game..

I try to be understanding and not hold others to my standard as I've a curse of sorts - not always easy, I forget, happens to the best of us.

The last 2 games of 2021 as example were completely off script for the Clemson Offense as it went over the top, run heavy leaving any notion of balance at will call.

With 21 Personnel, in those last 2 games[Wake & DirtPeckU], the offense rushed 97 times for 598 yards[6.2 yards per pop], while DJU threw the ball only 19 times in each contest.

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/21-personnel-clemsons-two-back-set-was-nightmare-for-gamecocks-20146

For a normal 50/50 offense, the breakdown was 72/28, pass adverse - completely changing the offense for DJ and protecting him in the process.

It was `more controlled in 2022, DJ started the season off very well considering his struggles and led Clemson to 7-0, until Cuse happened and unfortunately for DJ, it began to show cracks.

If you want DJ's first 7 games in 2022 before the fall, I can provide, but Streeter as OC did a nice job working with DJ, certainly over his 2021 campaign - again, before going South with the geese.

I wish DJ well, he has said that he's much more at peace being in relative obscurity at Oregon State as opposed to the spotlight at Clemson.

And why we're seeing more passes being fired into and between the hashes this season - less fear that a high missile is going to continue flying down the field to an awaiting safety, or a tipped wayward pass up in the air amidst the fray.

The Clemson offense was adjusted for DJ. It was adjusted so much that I hated watching Clemson football and I am a lifelong fan. The offense looked totally different when Cade took over in Charlotte.

I want DJ to be successful at Oregon State. I do not know how his season will end but, I do know that he was getting some heat online this weekend.

I am going to concentrate on Cade now and not DJ. Cade was not prepped correctly because of the coddling of DJ and it showed at Duke. Cade is playing better now and the team is fun to watch again.

Re: We never adjusted our offense to DJ and now

Oct 1, 2023, 5:52 PM

I agree completely, we adjusted our offense the same way Oregon State has adjusted their offense.

Run the ball, limit the amount of passes DJ has to make, and not the offense but have a good defense.

He looks the same as he did here, so if he’s starting to get heat it’s their own fault. He is who he is at this point.

My only disagree there is in the 'coddling' of DJ. It is very difficult to point to any one moment in any game where DJ didn't present the best option available at the time. And when he wasn't the best option, the coaches went elsewhere. Cade got early reps in big lead games but had to get pulled and replaced after against La Tech after turning a 28-point lead to 14 real quick heading into the 4th Q. From '21 with a banged up TyPho and last season with a greenhorn, this staff managed to put together the longest active winning streak in the FBS and a CFP early pick.

job with Cade. Nobody is perfect, but I have zero complaints. This offense is getting better and better, which is not something we could say over the last two years. There was no hope that our offense would improve over the course of the season.

OSU is watching DJ begin to wilt under the pressure of being a major college QB.

Re: We never adjusted our offense to DJ and now

Oct 1, 2023, 8:23 PM

DJ; unfortunately, for him (and us while he was here) is kinda one dimensional.

Pre Snap - pick receiver
After Snap - plant feet and stare at the receiver
Throw Ball - to receiver picked at Snap or out of bounds, even if covered
variable 1 - stand there long enough to take a sack
variable 2 - take off running

Never - throw to anyone else
Never - look off safeties

Trust me, I liked DJ as a person and teammate while at Clemson, now wherever his development woes came from, he did not develop here as a QB.

He is not much different in the 2 games I watched... he does seem to have more time in the pocket at Oregon State...

Re: We never adjusted our offense to DJ and now

DJ he’s not a great quarterback, average at best.

However, I think he’s a fantastic punter. I don’t mean this is an insult, and I doubt DJ and his dad could stomach the “demotion” to punter, but the dude is a stud punter. He could have a fabulously long NFL career and get paid a couple million dollars a year and do very very well. And as a punter, once in a while he can drop back and throw the ball down field. He could also serve as the third string quarterback, thus possibly opening up a roster spot.

Re: We never adjusted our offense to DJ and now

Oct 2, 2023, 1:11 AM

If we adjusted to DJ we would only have one receiver running routes and if it wasn't there get what you can or throw it in the stands.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The issue is that Cade's first inclination after the snap...

2

Oct 2, 2023, 7:10 AM

was to bail out of the pocket. Defenses were well aware and set to deal with it. I'm guessing on this next part, Imo, Cade and the coaches want him to be most inclined to stay in the pocket. He has been superb. His ability to hit a moving target while moving himself is great but it's not going to be his bread and butter if he makes the draft. His avenue of success will be as a pocket passer.

I also believe that his newfound ability to hit receivers who are crossing the field is due to his practice at staying in the pocket and getting better judging the velocity needed on the ball and location of the point where the receiver and the ball meet. That is evidenced by the great increase of crossing routes which result in completions. He is progressing nicely and will become one of our greats.

The problem Cade is trying to overcome, even yet, is the dumbed down offense he was a part of last year which was instituted to deal with DJ's slow mind, feet, hands and body. Imo, we'd be stomping the dogchit out of everyone in our path had DJ been benched and Cade been started in the middle of last season.

All that sucking would be over with and we'd be rolling right now.
