Washington Redskins name debate

Bob Costas went political again (as he did with gun control a while back) and went off on how racist the term "Redskins" is.
I am curious, do we have any Native-American Clemson fans in here that have an opinion of the name?
(Dont want to start any arguments among friends, so please no one post any angry comments).
I really just feel the entire country is way to sensitive about stuff like this and we all need to stick to what we were told on the playground as kids... sticks and stones.
But I am more than willing to listen to those who feel this name references them and how they feel about it.
Just curious how big a deal this is to real people, not just politicians and TV.

about stuff like this, I do agree that a name like "Redskins" goes well beyond other Native American type names like "Indians", "Seminoles", "Chiefs", "Warriorers", or "Braves".

the irony here is it is in DC. And Congress who likes to impose its will is strangely moot here. I think because they are afraid their football tickets will get pulled if they say anything. just another example of their hypocrasy

Costas killed his argument before he ever even started. He said that most Native Americans don't find the term offensive. That right there should be the end of the story. If the majority of the only group of people that could possibly take offense to the name do not have an issue with it, then it's done. Why on earth would Bob and the rest of the politically correct crowd think they have the right to tell other types of people what they should find offensive?

The team originated as the Boston Braves, based in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1932.
At the time the team played in Braves Field, home of the Boston Braves baseball team.
The following year (1933) the club moved to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, whereupon the owners changed the team's name to the Boston Redskins. The name followed the team to Washington 1937
Why, after 80 years, is this just now becomming an issue?

Thoughts from a Native American chief

I heard this debate on OTL this past summer. They had a Native American chief from near the DC area on and he said the majority of his people think it's an honor. He said the few people in his tribe who have issue with it he tells them to "get over it".
A white guy and a black guy with no Native American blood were trying to tell him that he is wrong. The white guy said he had one Native American friend who didn't like it.

I don't get offended for other folks. It has no real meaning one way or another to me, so I have no real stake in the debate.
Doubly so as it seems that, if what is being reported is accurate, that those in the prime position to be offended (the native americans) don't seem to be getting upset over it.
Honestly, I'm not sure how anyone couldn't understand if they were, but since, by an large, they seem to not be, I'm not sure this is an issue at all.

I am so sick of this "debate". Essentially the ring leader is this tool at the Washington Post named Mike Wise. He seems to write about it once a week, every week. He has no problem in getting his paycheck covering the team, but can't bring himself to say the "r" word.
It's beyond ridiculous, and no one I know here has ever used the word "Redskin" in any way other to talk about a football team in Washington, or a certain type of potato. There are so many more things that can be done to promote the well being of Native Americans, but changing the name of a football team, when there are real problems that need to be dealt with, is just foolish.

I would be having a contest to see who could come up with a name that the PC police couldn't challenge, but that would still tick them off.
What about just 'skins? Or change it to Pigskins, and you could still call yourselves the 'skins?

called the Blackskins, the reason for the utter disgust towards the mascot name would be obvious enough to you. Why is it that a term specifically chosen by a virulent racist owner back in the mid 20th-century is creating this level of angst? Even St. Johns changed to the Red Storm, and that was in spite of the fact that the Redmen were not, in fact, chosen based on an association with Native Americans.

If someone were called the Whiteskins, it wouldnt bother me personally. But again, the whole aura is different with the history and such. Good views all around here but still hoping some actual Native-American Clemson fans are around to give us proper perspective.

however he wants. If people don't like it don't buy the product. Pretty simple. As another poster already stated, I don't take the time to be offended for someone else. If they don't like it then they should state their opinion. My opinion really matters not in this situation because I'm not native American.
