You are driving by looking in the rear view mirror.

The NIL payout sweepstakes is increasing rapidly each year.

Clemson had the foresight to spend big in the early part of NIL world, but we never had the resources to keep up with the NIL escalation vs the truly wealthy programs in a ‘war of attrition.’

That is not to suggest that our NIL payouts for a truly top player or three cannot still be within our budget. However, when we are fortunate enough to have numerous players that would get a lot of PT at rich programs such as aTm, TX, OK, Bama, UGA, USC, OR, MI, OH State, etc, we cannot afford to pay out whopper NIL money to keep all of them.

Thus, the Andrew Mukuba type situations will be a recurrent situation.

We all need to get accustomed to this.

Money based? I mean, he would still be our starting SS next year and backup NB, correct? This is a bit surprising, but I’m sure the coaches had a lot of conversations with him and this is best for both parties. We do have some great DB recruits coming in to support what was an excellent freshman class.

Have to be willing to payeth with money we don't haveth. Just like Matt Rhule said, a good QB costs 2-3 million in the portal. The portal combined with NIL is open free agency. Easy solution is to make players sit a year like it's always been & players will stay put. The current model heavily favors larger, richer schools & allows them to buy developed players. Schools that develop these players are getting robbed. Go Tigers!!!!

Clemson is in the latter group of those that get robbed. It's fast times now, so you pay for players or lose them. Maybe less so for high school players, but they will look for money too eventually.

If a college that accepts transfer students on full academic scholarship -AND- that does not prevent that incoming transfer student from taking a job outside of school, then that school would have no legal foundation for preventing a transfer student on a full athletic scholarship from also taking a job outside of school.

That ship has sailed. My selfish side makes me sad about this, but my moral side acknowledges that this is the right thing.

I noticed that Barnes was named the starter at NB pushing Kubz back to SS late in the season (that also moved and pushed Phillips under Mickens at FS).

Could be a variety of reasons. Maybe he didn't want to play SS, maybe he did it for the NIL money (I think he has a kid), or maybe he just wanted a fresh start elsewhere. Either way I wish him the best.

That is how NIL payouts started.

Clemson was ahead of the NIL curve by competing Mano-a-Mano … for a few if the highest profile position players … kept us in the NIL game.

Now that the other (really big money) schools realize that they have the ability to win a NIL war of (financial) attrition vs the mid-range financial competitors such as Clemson and FSU, they are now paying big NIL bucks for DBs and OLs.

The mid-range financially capable schools simply cannot win this type of war of attrition.

Just like strong regional banks such as Dollar Bank (big presence in Western PA) cannot fight off Wells Fargo in a no holds barred fight. The strong regional bank must focus their business model in providing superior service to strong regional customers, similar to how Dollar Bank understands the business model of natural gas frackers in W.PA and ‘wins’ the lending competition vs. the giant banks for this niche.

guys like deshaun watson or Trevor Lawrence in college can move to another school and go from 150K to 2 million in NIL payouts.. You'll have high profile guys jumping alot going forward, unless they can get paid the same at current school. ITs sad but I can't blame anyone for take a huge NIL pay increase even if they're going to a worse situation. I probably would too.

I believe that Clemson will continue to successfully compete in the NIL sweepstakes for big time QBs, WRs, DLs, RBs, and the occasional LB & DB.

We cannot afford to compete across the board with big NIL deals for many of our high quality starters, nor key young backups that we are not ‘ready’ yet to give big NIL money.

Places such as aTm can afford to pay EVERYONE on their roster big NIL money. Watching the NIL marketplace evolve, it appears that the big wallet boosters are coming to the realization that, if they are really passionate about winning championships, they will have to fork out big money so that ALL layers in the team have big NIL deals. Furthermore, for the superstar QBs, etc, they will be coughing up ~ $5M money.

Before very long, Clemson will not be able to keep up with any of the NIL money that the super rich schools can afford … and will willingly play.

Thus, the critical need for Clemson to get into a conference that has a much more lucrative TV contract. We can keep up for a few more years if this can, somehow, get done.

What is the going NIL price for a starting safety?

I'm surprised he couldn't be at least a 5th round pick in the NFL.

The first pick of the fifth round will sign a contract worth approximately $4.224 million and receive a signing bonus of approximately $384,680. The second pick of the round will receive a $4.218 million contract with a $378,408 signing bonus. The numbers decrease each pick until the 43rd pick where the player will receive a $4.098 million contract with a $258,040 signing bonus.
