I hope to see a big improvement from last year’s D. I’m hoping our Offense can help them out a bit too. We’ll find out in just a few short weeks. For now, it’s all rhetoric.

Defense WILL be better!

I thought our defense was put in bad position last year! And, hey the other team has kids on scholarship too! In other words, they will eventually make plays as well.

If the offense can stress opposing teams offenses into rushing or feeling like they need to do more than normal - it bodes well for Clemson. That's how we just destroyed teams, i.m.o during 15-19 especially. Get them pressing and the defense can tee-off.

Allow teams to be balanced and you have a lot more trouble containing them.

The biggest factor though will be Wes!
I can tell you my 2nd year as a college player, "I felt like I had figured it out"! That freshman year was me with my head swimming most of the time. Wes in year two has been through it and knows some things to sure up "ahead of the season"! I look forward to seeing how he has grown as a defensive play caller.

Never understood neither hire, and I wonder if Dabo will ever admit how much he set our Tiger FB back with the hires of Streeter and Goodwin....

Hang on there froggy, don’t jump yet. Let’s see what he does in year 2 then we can throw him under the bus if our D doesn’t improve. At the end of the season, we’ll have all the statistical ammunition.
I was scratching my head over the Dabo hire back in 2009-2010.

Clearly many on here have ever built an organization where you not only have your direct reports but a succession plan. Hiring from within of your preparing for it is natural and good leadership. Every now and then you need to inject new energy/ideas from the outside and Dabo has now done that for offense. Defense easily top ten this year and “what a great hire” and “Dabo is so smart”. If not, you’ll likely see a change.

Injuries played a role last year and the offense not beating folks down or literally just making some additional first downs changes the narrative entirely. Additionally, Goodwin is smart and will make leaps year 1 to 2.

I've never had a problem with developing your own coaching tree, but Streeter nor Goodwin was ready yet, and neither was taken under the previous coordinators wing to prepare them for the job...

Goodwin was taken from an office to the field where he didn't have any experience with coaching college age players of any college sports program. Streeter was taken from his job that I personally don't think he done well at, and he was made OC with a big time college FB program that he wasn't ready for....

Goodwin improved a great deal between beginning of 2022 and late season 2022.

Streeter? Not so.

Really???? You "never understood neither hire". Goodwin, who has had pro experience with Arizona under Bruce Arians, and spent 4 years with BV, isnt ready? Dabo and BV didnt see What was coming and groom him to do the job? What makes you qualified to prejudge what they do regularly? If Wes doesn't make it after a reasonable time, then jump on him. SMH. So far, Wes hasn't done anything wrong. He needs to step it up, but youve got.to give him the chance. Its funny. Most people were against BV when he came here. Oklahomas defense was a joke. We allnknow town that hire turned out

Way too many 3 and outs on the offensive side of the ball last year. Improve that and this defense should shine

Have to take issue with one thing you said in your article about the "pass defense got better as the year went on." Ohhhhh Nnnnoooo it didn't. They were horrible against Usuck and also against TN. They couldn't cover their Grandma.

I admitted as much, but compared to how they looked against La Tech and Wake Forest they did improve. Mostly it was Nate Wiggins emerging. Remember when Fred Davis II was playing in the early games? As bad as it was against U of SC and UT, it was notably worse early in the season. Another factor late in the year was the offense cratering and throwing the defense back out there too much.

2023 defensive predictions

Aug 14, 2023, 6:55 PM

I'll give 'em to you here in the replies to your thread, sir Ryan.

Here are the 2022 Tigers:
102.7 rushing yds/game. 13th in country
231.7 passing yds/game. 76th in country
334.4 total yds/game. 28th in country
20.9 pts/game. 22nd in country.

TVD 2023 predictions:
97 rushing yds/game. 10th in country
190 passing yds/game. 20th in country
297 total yds/game. 10th in country
17 ppg. 8th in country

Basically, they end up solidly better than last year. 2nd year coach improves. Depth pieces along line and on the back end improve. Starters in secondary are much improved. Offense does a better job keeping them off the field. Tigers slip up once in the regular season against someone not FSU; it's still good enough to get into the ACCCG; and they trounce a coastal team.

Will that be good enough for a playoff invite? Top 10 defense, top 20 offense, 1 loss ACC champion with diminished cred following the last 2 seasons of lackluster play and the previous 2 losses in playoffs before that?

You're of course invited to weigh in on the statistical predictions and the win prediction (12 before a bowl game).
