This is my attempt to promote thoughtful downtime discussion

Jul 14, 2012, 12:35 PM

Clemson is a special place that we all love and expect great things from, both athetically and academically. We want to continue to be proud of our alma mater. Most of us on this board are here though bc we want the football program to be awesome. We love it and love talking about it.

I've been thinking a lot about this Penn St stuff and how it relates to Clemson. Even fans who don't like Dabo seem to respect him for a clean program, high character recruits, and his morality. Pretty similar to what people said about Penn St for decades. (NO! I'm not implying we have scandal/ cover-up!!!)

One of the huge differences that I see is that at Penn St, the tail wagged the dog... football told academics how it was done... JoePa was the alpha dog.

Now on tigernet people have been irate at the BOT, Pres Barker, and TDP for the academics first approach and the ARC. For Barker football is important but it does not supercede academics, a position that has been fodder for many angry posters on TNET. Sure a player can get in with lower scores than the average student, but we don't take you just because you're a baller.

Dwight Jones was denied, J Bullard went to Florida, and I Crowell went to UGA (I think we were leaders for both those guys but turned them down.. Crowell at least had us on top for a long time). Of those 3, 1 is kicked out of school, 1 is acad ineliglble, and D Jones never met the hype.

We have great facility improvements and they are only getting better.

I guess the point I'm rambling to is that with all the moaning and complaining, I think Pres Barker, the ARC, and our athletic department are getting it done the right way. More plainly, Pre Barker is doing a good job. There is a balance at Clemson that won't allow for scandal like at PSU, but athletics are important enough that we are constantly improving facilities and trying to be better. TDP has hired high quality people to lead our young men in football and basketball (don't know the other sports well enough to say). Academics are a focus and that is reflected in our student graduation rate, both athelete and non-athelete. I really love my university and am proud of how it is being run. In my heart, maybe for the first time, I truly believe that all the components are coming together and placing Clemson on a path to be even better than it ever has been.

Thanks for indulging me..

GO TIGERS!!

I like the way things are going at Clemson...

especially around the football program. I wouldn't change places with any other college grad or football fan either.

GREAT POST. Some of what I read on tigernet is disturbing. A lot of members need a reality check. There are tons of schools that can only dream about Clemson and how everything is handled in a first class way.

CLEMSAM

Totally agree. There are a number of programs who have had more success than Clemson but few have improved in all areas as the Tigers have in the past few years. If you complain about ANY of the leadership at Clemson then you are not a true fan. Doing it is great. Doing everything the right way is almost unthinkable in todays college sports. Regardless of what others my say or think, we all know that CLEMSON IS # 1.

Don't think you'll get "thoughtful" discussion

Jul 14, 2012, 2:05 PM

You will get a lot of people who agree with you. You will get a few who think that the purpose of a university is to act as a minor league for the NFL, NBA, and MBL. Of the later most will probably not be graduates or not have been in the work place long.

I was as much a sports fanatic as anyone when I was young and dinosaurs roamed the earth, but I was never of the opinion that athletes should receive special treatment at Clemson or any other school. I think history bears this out as being correct.

I really thought I'd get ripped based on the anger directed

toward Pres, BOT, and TDP. Honestly, it is a welcome surprise.

Agree 100%. I love Clemson University - for the time I spent as a student there, the tme my dad spent as a student there, for my education, my friends and my alumni family. My love for the sports teams is just part of it.

Agree

Some people on here bash Barker, TDP and the BOT for not being supportive enough of the football team. I think they are appropriately supportive. Penn State is a good example of what happens when administrators put the football team and its reputation above that of the university as a whole.

I love Clemson football (and other sports) but more than anything I love Clemson University.

Go Tigers!

From a "coot", I have to say I agree with you on everything. It might rile some of my feathered friends, but I think Clemson is a great university. There's way more to life than college sports and I know a lot of people that attended CU, and quite a few kids that attend there now. CU grads have every right to be proud of their university. Beautiful campus, great programs and degrees that carry a lot of value.
It's a shame that institutions of higher learning are at the point they are, but to attain and retain the level of professors and faculty necessary sports have become too big a financial factor. But I am grateful they are there to somewhat help keep cost down...I have one kid that just finished college, one still attending and one more to go that is still in hs. But that's a totally different subject.
At the present time I believe CU and USC have a stable of noble coaches of honesty, integrity and knowledge. And I believe both are running their athletics the way it should be done (disclaimer before any mud gets slung, lol...both schools have had internal issues. All colleges do but I believe USC and CU's are minor compared to most). We are all fortunate to have that in a state the size of ours and it makes me proud that both represent my home state as well as they do.

Should Crump start a calculus board?

Jul 14, 2012, 3:38 PM

Then everyone can post their favorite theorums for open discussion.

I'm confused by all the academic talk ... everyone knows college athletes are not rocket scientists (unless they go to MIT ... but then they probably suck).

If you really want to separate big money sports from academics, needs to be a minor league NFL system where HS kids can get drafted just like baseball. Then the kids that want the $$$ go one way, the kids that want the education go the other.

Simple.

Either I am not understanding you or you completely missed

Jul 14, 2012, 4:17 PM

the point (easy to do in a rambling post.)

I'm not talking about, nor interested in, seperating athletics from academics. My point is simply that we have a great balance of academics and athletics working together. At PSU, football called the shots. At Clemson, academics are primary and athletics secondary (with football being our most important sport by far), but not to the point of being deemed unimportant.

People don't like the ARC. I do.
People don't like Pres Barker. I do.

Clemson seems to be walking the line of quality academnics AND quality athletics and I appreciate it and am proud of it.
Those were my points.

But yes, we can have a calculus board for you if you'd like ;)

With all due respect...lets not things twisted...Football rules the roost at clemson also...just cause we have some intrance standards doesnt mean academics always comes first
