Unless I’m wrong they were going to be a starter at WR and Mukaba at safety. All the others moved on for playing time.

Money. Both have just enough value, especially Makuba, to land a solid NIL deal for teams that are desperate for an upgrade. Tomorrow (NFL) is not guaranteed for anyone so there are plenty who are making purely financial decisions now.

Yea. I'w with you on those two. Collins is easily replaceable but Mukuba had a good bit of experience and was going to be the starter. That will hurt.

competition cutting into, or in Collins case, maybe DRASTICALLY reducing their playing time.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it, since I can never be proven wrong. (Or right, but that is a mere bagatelle.)

Look at it like they would have looked at it....Collins has been somewhat productive. Injuries have slowed him, and inconsistent QB play for three years has held him back. He looks at the roster and knows Stellato had four less catches in less snaps. He knows Williams is about to get healthy. He knows Brown is a player. He knows Wesco and Moore are coming and both are expected to contribute. Sure, he might be starter game one, but would he be starting game five? Maybe it's best to go somewhere and get a little money and a guarantee of playing time?
As for Mukuba, I think he has a kid he needs to take care of, and he let everyone know in November that he was going pro. So they are trying to make sure that spot is filled. And then he got his draft grade back, and it's not great, so he has to play somewhere. And there are a lot of talented kids at safety for the Tigers (Webb, Griffin, Barnes, Covil, Billings, etc.) With Venables coming back and Mickens undecided, all of a sudden that is a really crowded spot with a lot of talent wanting to play. And, maybe he gets some cash to help with his family situation.

Thanks the info. I didn’t realize Makuba has a kid. If that’s the case, every decision he makes should be for the betterment of that relationship, especially if it secures financial provisions.

I don't have any inside info so this is pure speculation but Collins also seemed to me to be a bit restless, kind of like he was still struggling to fit in. I kind of wondered if he was on the stoop of the love shack at times. Maybe it was just the West Coast kid not quite fitting in.
Like I said, speculation on my part but just feels like something might have been there.

He had an awesome freshman year, then just hit a serious wall as a sophomore. Maybe it's the lingering elbow injury or something in his head, but he probably will not make it in the NFL, in my opinion, so he might as well make his money now.

I did not feel the NFL would rate him high at this point. He has been injured a lot. He is not physical enough. Misses tackles. He regressed from his Freshman year when I thought he was gonna as good as we have ever had back there.

I think Collins wants to team back up DJ.
As for Makuba, he is a Texan, and UT is going to be in the SEC next season. I feel like he probably wanted to play against the perceived "best competition" to up his stock while playing for the hometown team. I am puzzled by his move though. I thought we would lose him to the NFL, not to another College team.

Check David Hood’s comment above. Sounds like Mukuba told the staff he was going to the NFL, the staff began to make plans accordingly, then Mukuba got a mediocre draft grade back. Add in a child and it sounds like life already made this decision for him.

Writing was on the wall that Collins being jumped on the depth chart going into next season was a likely outcome, to go along with bag chasing.
Makuba, however, seems solely financially motivated. He was set to be the upper class anchor in the secondary of a top tier defense. He may not have been compensated the way Texas(?) would be willing to do but his draft stock would have been solely in his hands whereas now he is venturing into more uncertain territory by switching teams late in his collegiate career.

I wish him the best but, last year his effort/motor was haphazard, he couldn't block to save his life, and his 3rd down drop rate was abysmal.
