The Battle of Britain has such a juicy backstory I think it’s worth a closer look all on its own. So I’m gonna split this offering into:

It’s kind of a famous battle. It lead to some great speeches, a decent movie with Michael Caine, some awesome propaganda, a damm good Iron Maiden song, and oh yeah, it saved England from the Natzis.

Every good fight has a good bad guy. So let’s dig into the Natzis, or National Socialists. They were the enemy in the Battle of Britain, and the ultimate bad guys of all time, really. We would consider them crazy in our political system. Not just because of their racial purity and homicidal eugenic ideas, but because even their non-genocidal political goals don’t jive with our political platforms at all.

The Natzis were definitely “by any means necessary” kinds of guys, mobilized by hate. Hate of anybody, or anything, as a means of ginning up the masses into action.
The name of Hit ler’s 1925 book Mein Kampf is literally, “My Fight.” Kinda says it all.

So that would be the Nationalist part of National Socialism. Germany above all. All for the state. And some of that All might trickle down to the State’s pure blood Aryan sons and daughters, but to no one else. It was Nationalism to the extent of while you could own land or companies, what they produce must benefit the state, not you. And that’s kind of foreign to us.

I love good propaganda, and it played a big role in setting the stage before the Battle of Britain. How could you not pull for this cute flower girl’s racist Utopia? She’s practically glowing with murderous enthusiasm, asking for money for youth hostels. How sweet.

Nazism should not be confused with Communism. In Communism you cannot own anything, and whatever you produce must be used to benefit the State. In Nazism, you can own something, and whatever you produce must be used to benefit the State. See the difference?

The State in this case was not a representative democracy, but Adolph Hit ler himself. And that’s who you swore allegiance too. Like any loving father he would see that you were taken care of and had a good life. He was absolutely stone cold dead serious about that, and his policies prove it, as long as you were racially pure.

It’s easier to think of Natzi politics as not leaning left or right, but rather up or down. Not liberal vs. conservative, but superior vs. inferior. That’s how they saw it. I’ll let Adolph explain it himself.

Hitler expressed opposition to capitalism, regarding it as having Jewish origins and holding nations ransom to interest-grubbers. So, money bad.
He also expressed opposition to communism, arguing that inequality and hierarchy ARE beneficial to the nation. So, equality bad.

Money bad, equality bad. That’s kind of foreign and upside-down to us.

The Natzis also worked very hard at autarky, which is total state independence. That is, we don’t even want to trade.
I mean, we’ll come over and take your shid, but we’re not stooping to trade with inferior savages like you. The best foreign trade deal for us is “WE TAKE.”

Domestically, though, it was all about pastoral community and family life. The Nazti ideal was the heroic man who rejected a materialistic and private life for a public life of duty, willing to sacrifice everything for the nation. But how do you keep this devoted, ideal man happy?

So that’s the enemy, racist National Socialism. And what was at stake. A life, if you were lucky to be alive, supporting Natzism. But let’s get back to the Battle of Britain and how England kept from being one giant slave-labor camp supporting German ideals and families, like France was.

The fall of France was a geopolitical atomic bomb around the globe. It shook our government (but not our folks) completely out of isolationism. It got our navy building like crazy, and on the other side of the planet it opened the door for Japan to get their own oil in French Indochina. And with Greater Germany just 50 miles away across the English Channel, it put Britain in a he77 of a bind.

The disaster in France wasn’t just a French military debacle, either. The British lost nearly all of their army in France, too. Not the men, who mostly escaped at the Dunkirk miracle, but damm near all of their equipment. And troops only armed with broomsticks aren’t a very effective fighting force.

This one is just damm hilarious. The Germans “saving” French colonies from abuse by conquering senile and decrepit France itself.

This is another very nice piece of propaganda. Maybe my fave. It’s just so GD evil, and it’s meant to drive a wedge between the French/English alliance. Look at those smiling British tommies abandoning the French on the dock as they make their escape from France. Holding them back at gunpoint, even. That’s just great stuff right there. The best propaganda isn’t a lie, it’s the half truth- the half you want to tell. Just brilliant.

But despite the catastrophe in France and at Dunkirk, Britain had us filling their back pockets with goodies via Lend-Lease. And we knew how to do propaganda, too.

Here’s an example of redirection propaganda from us. Look over here, but not over there. Everything you will ever hear about Lend Lease is how we supplied Britain fighting against the treacherous Atlantic U-Boats. Look at those nasty waves in the North Atlantic. Which of course is true. At least, half true.

But this is the whole truth. Look how much Lend Lease is going everywhere else, including through the back door to Russia via the Middle East and right over Japan’s nose. You won’t find any heroic posters of us sneaking goods to Russia north of Japan. That was a secret the whole war. Among many others.

So that’s the background on the bad guys, the situation, and the information and persuasion war going on just before the Battle of Britain.

Next time, the situation inside Britain itself. Because in addition to trying to convince the US to save them, Britain had another gargantuan problem at home. So big that there might not have even been a Battle of Britain at all. How’s that for a teaser?
