The 60’s had the most expansive variety of music of any decade ever. It was evolutionary to say the least. Most of the songs are still popular today.

Mid 70s to late 80s. Great Rock and top 40. Great County music until the last 10 to 15 years.

Yes nothing like listening to music that sounds like it was produced in a Denny's bathroom that shares the same 3 chords and had the same drum beat. That’s like saying Atari was the best gaming system.

This is the correct answer. Only early to mid 90’s roots rock and alternative got close in my book.

Never be better. I miss the 80’s.
The evolution of popular music in America takes a huge turn for the better in the mid 50’s with artist like Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. They introduced rock and roll.
The evolution of popular music in America takes a huge turn for the worse on August 1st of 1981. THAT was the day the music died.
Up until that point the focus of the music industry was in fact to create music. But on 8-1-1981 we got something new. It was a 24/7 music channel. And to be honest, I think we were all pretty well enamored with it. We were glued to it. We had music video channels prior to that on cable TV, stuff like Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, the Old Gray Whistle Test or one I used to watch on Friday nights, Video Jukebox.
But those shows were aired in limited time slots late at night and almost always focused on live stage performances. You were getting to see your favorite bands as they would appear on stage.
With MTV the format was totally different. The videos were designed as eye candy. And it didn’t take long before it became a race to see who could produce the best eye candy. THAT was the main focus now and the actual music became secondary. In fact the music became an afterthought, it’s the video that will sell the song. Artist, producers and record label executives recognized this was where the money would be made going forward.
What got lost in the process was the blues element. It faded from both rock and roll and R&B. Enter drum machines and the beats really began to sound programmed and robotic.
There were some holdover artist into the 80’s such as The Eagles, ZZ Top, Aerosmith and Rush but they were no longer the predominant type of popular music. Sadly what was driving popularity in music sales was the over the top videos and not actual musical art. Our blues oriented R&R had gone the way of ridiculous punk and speed metal hair bands while Marvin Gaye and Earth, Wind and Fire yielded to rap.
It’s a very sad story.

there always is. There was some good music out there, it just wasn't mainstream any more and harder to find. Me personally, as someone who never got into grunge, metal, etc... rock sorta fizzled out in the mid 70s. Because everything had already been done before in the last 10 years or so... there was really nothing "new"...

take a hit in the late 70's, with the disco craze, which was all about the monotonous dance beat and the performers flashy outfits!
One thing amazing about the advent of MTV was how that little ole band from Texas, blues rockers ZZ Top, jumped on that horse and rode the hail out of it. Their first 4 or 5 albums are still far superior! I remember buying their first album when in first came out around 1970, when no one else had it!

I was in high school and the navy through those years. Most of the stuff on the radio rock and roll wise did little for me in the mid to late 80’s. Back at Miramar the radio was always on in the shop and invariably tuned to San Diego’s longstanding R&R station, KGB.
I remember the first time I heard Jethro Tull’s “ Farm On The Freeway” about 1986. Between the music, the lyrics and the production of it, it was a throwback to early Jethro Tull. I’d put it right up there with “Crosseyed Mary” and “Locomotive Breath”.
But it was absolutely the exception to the rule for what was getting air play during that time. That was getting tossed in between The Bangles and The Pet Shop Bots. 🥺

period for music was about 1964-73. To each his own, but I'll take Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Beach Boys, Motown, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Skynyrd over Prince and Springsteen, any day of the week!
Not to mention, wasn't the 80's about when the rap crap came on the scene? That's enough right there to eliminate the 80's from any consideration!

That cheesy digital music and hairband rock of the 80’s was the worst. As a fan of rock, 90’s were way better for the genre I listen to. I can respect the 70s, but def don’t get the love for the 80s.

I dont agree with your statement but the evidence you used would be very compelling if that were all there was to the story.
I don't think you advocated any other decade, but for some of you fans of the 70s: you can't hide your disco. I was a kid, but I remember it well. 80s New Wave was better than disco .

Disco was definitely a low spot, but at least it had a fairly short lifespan! Unlike rap crap, which can only be explained by the extremely poor taste many of all ages have for music.
I have over 400 albums in my vinyl collection, and thousands more on my Spotify playlists, and I'm proud to say...not a single rap or disco track!

The pop music of the 80's was the cheesiest, silly synth sound crap ever. I put on pop 80's as a joke. "Su-susdudio" oh oh! There was certainly some good stuff from the 80's but overall the pop was just cheesy.
