State of Baseball

I know I see something special with this team. Not in Bakich’s 2nd year or 3rd, but this team. Im realizing that this lineup is simply loaded. First off, there are basically zero bad hitters in our lineup. Yeah you’ve got the top half, but guys like Blackwell, Amick especially, and Bertram have consistently hit well and had great ABs.

I noticed an AB by Blackwell versus NC State where Erik called him over and slowed him down. Blackwell ended up working it 3-2 and walked. Bakich has control over these guys. He’s making them more consistent. There’s real, actual process being made. It’s not a fake fluke like Monte when he started 13-0 and then sucked.

But since I see good things, I find it safe to start paying attention to the analytics. There were several teams ahead in the RPI that lost midweek games, such as East Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Campbell, Dallas Baptist. 3 of which were beat by ACC teams that we’ve played like NC State, WF, and Duke. Also, the coots are unfortunately having their best year since their great 2010s run. But it’s helping out RPI very much since we have a win against them.

Looking ahead, I would say that if we beat Coastal, we may only need to win 2/3 against one of our remaining ACC opponents (BC, Louisville, UNC). All three are good teams. But beating Coastal would be a tremendous boost. I believe that our team is well good enough to beat any opponent really in the ACC at the moment. With the progress we’ve made by this point, we may be nationally very good by the end.

Love how Bakich chose the approach of taking this slow and getting everything set. It has taken a bunch of switching players around and the pitching has finally shown they’re better. And I’m sure there’s more to do, but we’re just looking unbeatable right now.

Agree 100%%. All these kids at this level can play but instilling some confidence makes a huge difference .

worked with Olenchuk on his delivery. He was letting the batters see too much of the ball in his wind up or whatever....You just wonder how many LITTLE things like that they have seen and made a change to, that is now paying off. ALso, over the past couple of weeks we are batting about 400 with men on base. I think that is what they said ....

best shot for us.

As long as opposing teams persist in throwing Caden Grice hittable fastballs, his average will continue to rise. He is definitely locked in on the quick stuff right now. If Jobu will get off his tiny ar$e and help him with the breaking ball, no telling what he could do.

Pitching needs to continue the current improvement trend. We certainly don't want to HAVE to score ten runs a game to win, which was the case it seemed like, early in the season.

GO, TIGERS!

Agree. Hopefully we'll get Ammons back for a few innings this weekend. Huge if we just win the series. When you compare the head to head schedule, very similar teams and should be an equal series.

Definitely need to get the rust knocked off Ammons but I was encouraged from his limited use this past weekend. We need Lindley to get healthy as well, so last night was concerning. Bakich didn’t waste much time giving him the hook, so probably they were already seeing issues in practice.

Yes.

The most effective pitch against Grice is that curve that drops in the dirt, or really anywhere in the zone.

But what I’ve seen from Grice is just an incredible improvement already. Someone told him to just watch the ball and focus on seeing it better. Lately he’s been just laying off the curve and making them throw fastballs. And fouling off a lot more pitches.

Like I mentioned with Balckwell, Bakich will make sure our guys are having good ABs

We had leads going into the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings in games we loss. South Carolina, Duke, and Georgia Tech. GT we had down to their last out. We could have won all of those series. 1 or 2 plays. Feel like he was telling us with his preseason neck down comments. But I think they are starting to click and learn how to win.

I forgot about GT. South Carolina hurts a bit, that could’ve made us a virtual lock at this point if we got them 2/3.

But all that goes to show that we were on the same level of competition and an actually a bit better, but just still had some tweaks to work out. That’s all you can take from those losses. Thank God we have a top-3 Strength of Schedule.
