Standing & Sitting Etiquette

I witnessed a near fight at the UNC game because a couple was standing in the front row of the south upper when we were on offense. In your opinion what is the proper etiquette for when to sit and when coming to your feet is appropriate in the stadium?

I know I’ll catch some heat for this take…. But it is your seat to sit or stand as you want. It would be considerate but not required and you shouldn’t get mad about it. Just like you can build a fence anywhere as long as it’s your property (I know hoa and stuff, but you get the analogy)

If you plan on sitting to watch a Clemson game, stay home and watch it on your TV.

This is exactly the case. In the lower bowl, you stand almost the entire time, which is why I prefer it. Unfortunately, my wallet does not like the lower bowl, so I sit in the upper deck, and I stand the entire defensive series, and then pretty much any time a big play develops on offense, I shoot up and stand.

Was at the NCST game on the road a few years ago and I was standing for most of the game and some NCST fan behind me started getting pizzed and told me to sit. I said I paid as much they did for the ticket, and if they wanted to pay to sit, they should have bought snacks and stayed home.

Obviously, there are situations where being respectful is better, and I have even asked to swap a seat next to me, or a row up or down just to make sure everybody was good all around.

The line will be drawn here on age and those that were taught to respect their elders and those that were not. There is nothing wrong with standing up after a good play, certainly a touchdown or in critical situations when a first down or a big stop is needed. If you are sitting in front of older folks who cannot physically stand for long periods of time, it is just flat out nice to respect them and sit as much as possible.

My ticket cost what theirs cost and I'm a stander. I work from a standup desk in my office. There's no way I'm parking it in bleachers because the random luck of the draw has an individual directly behind me that can't or won't stand.

I'll make refreshment runs for them...hold the doors, and make sure there are no inadvertent curses that spring forth, but I will not sit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sounds like you should sit on the top row.***

The problem arrives when you have the row in front of you standing. Do you continue to sit and not see the play on the field? I like to always be respectful of the people behind me but if people in front of me are standing and I can't see I feel forced to stand or miss the play.

Attending the games is a LOT more than watching the games on tv! You really don’t help the players when you sit at home watching the ESPN or any other network.

It’s a real thrill to run down that hill with 80,000 real fans supporting you.

I stand for pretty much the whole game and never sit when the defense is on the field. The seats directly in front and behind ours have different people in them every game. The ONLY time I change what I do is if I see that the people directly behind me legitimately don’t appear able to stand. When that is the case, I will sit if the people in front of me are sitting and I can see the game sitting down. If people are complaining they can’t see but are physically able to stand, it’s their problem, not mine. Especially since I am in those seats every game and they just showed up for one game.

I end up standing if the people in front of me stand. It usually just causes a huge chain reaction when one row stands.

Not exactly sure what people think it accomplishes by standing the entire game.

And brag about how hardcore they are. I'm all for standing on big plays/when we are on defense and my preference is to stand as much as possible, but I do think it is good to be considerate of others who may not be able to stand the whole game. It makes zero difference to the team's performance. Standing versus sitting is not going to cause us to win or lose at the end of the day, so why get up in arms about it.

Position To require us to sit (which I am fine with) because if we stand EVERYBODY behind us is standing. I am not interested in starting that chain reaction to find out I am to blame for Pop’s blood clots in Row S. I also have these seats (and have kept them forever) so I don’t have to stand.

So I think people on the front row should sit and if they don’t want to, then they should find other seats. The ROY seats can decide to sit or stand as you like.

I believe in being respectful and courteous regardless where I am. I will stand on big plays and when it is appropriate. The guy in front of me has been standing and blocking my view for 15 years so I'll just stick my head to the side to see around him. Often times the people behind me will ask him to sit and he gives the same response as others here ....... "I've been sitting here for 15 years and pay the same for this seat as you". Occasionally it gets nasty, but no blows yet.

We are in row C upper deck have different people behind us almost every week. We stand a lot on 3rd and 4th down. The only recent complaint was a Notre Dame fan siting with a group of 6 ND fans right behind us.

I believe if you want to stand, stand. It helps get the crowd pumped when more folks are standing.

I think it’s more disrespectful to stroll up and down the stairways or in and out of rows during a play. We don’t have concessionaires so it’s not so bad but some fans just don’t get it. Had a couple stroll in just as the cannon was going off and the team was breaking loose at the rock. last weekend.

I absolutely do not get why people think they have to stand up all the time. You can be just as loud sitting down. Try it. It really works 😏 I always check to see if people behind me are sitting or standing UNLESS it’s a big play etc.

I sit (stand) right on the aisle. If someone comes down the steps and wants to enter the row I make them wait until between plays. Never had anyone challenge that.

If the folks behind you are older...say, in their 60's.....and you stand the ENTIRE game, you're probably a richard head....

Stand up during:
Big 3rd down/4th down on defense during first half....
Going for it on 4th down on O....
When the Tigers break a big run/pass...
Anytime on D during a close game in the second half.
FG attempt in a close game, end of 1st half or anytime second half....

Other than that, considerations to others SHOULD be paramount.....regardless of the $ you spent. (But, I was raised to respect others and the Golden Rule......unfortunate for our future that a good many weren't)

great fan, you're just an ice hole. I prefer to stand during games, but am considerate of those around me. Before we let our seats go (low in the middle of the top deck), we would always go to the top so we could stand. It was much more fun up there.

That said, if the folk in front of me stand, then, I'm standing and if you're behind me, figure it out.

Because we have options in where we sit, if my wife and I want to have young uns around we go to the spots in C near the students. It's rowdy and fun. And hot. Or rainy.

If we want shade and comfort and cover from rain drops we head to the spots in upper UF with all the blue hairs and binoculars. Where people know each other's names, grandkid's names, pet's names, and hip surgeon's names.

But no matter where we choose, NOONE stands unless there's a reason to stand.

Those who stand for no reason are tryhards.
Inconsiderate tryhards.

If most people are standing, or your view is blocked by someone else, stand.

If most people are sitting, and you standing blocks the view of others, sit.

Some people have trouble standing, and blocking their view just because you want to stand up all game is pretty inconsiderate - especially if you can see the game just fine while sitting.

I know it makes some people feel like more of a super fan for standing. It’s an ego thing. But honestly, the team doesn’t benefit from you standing. They benefit from you cheering. And you can cheer and yell and scream whether you sit or stand.

I stand for (almost) every play and I try to shift my position so if the people behind choose to sit, they can see the play. That doesn’t always work but usually they understand I’m making an effort and are tolerant. I’ve never had a problem with people behind me because of that.
