Shining my Sperry Top Siders today made me think of DaD

who from the mid 40’s to late ‘59 always shined my shoes religiously every Sunday morn b/4 Church so I’d be sharp looking from toe to head.
Don’t normally shine a deck/boat shoe (blue) or any shoe during the Summer but headed soon to a memorial for an ole shag dance & yacht owner friend who died at HHI whom we called “Captain” Drew..
so at the drop-in memorial we decided to be casual & wear boat attire (white pants, Golf shirts & causal deck shoes) to celebrate him.
Oh, as young teen in Charlotte Drew won the soap box derby, as did his DaD & Granddad did years earlier.
I asked him how he did racing the Box in Dayton at the Nationals and he sheepishly (at age 82) told me he lost to a Girl since his steering broke and he ran off the track into a small tree. LOL~
It’s a good day in life when a shoe shine brings back ole memories.
Oh, Dad was a Tar Heel and Drew a huge GT guy (Yacht named “Ramblin’ Wreck”)..but both liked our Tigers.

Looks easy but her steps would take many ladies couple weeks to nail plus smooth it out and with a hitch dip.

No smoother dancer than him and a HOF too~
If you want good clean fun with good people and have a shag dance club near you..
think about taking it up since learning steps keeps the brain active (confused too), the joints lubercated (is that a word), the heart pumped up good and the laughter flowing.

Was Saturday night for us. I still have the old red "Shoebox". My father had made it in Vacation Bible School when he was a teen.
I hated it when my sister got those black and white saddle oxfords. Liquid polish on the white...black paste on the black. A polisher's nightmare.

Bill, I started wearing Sperry Topsiders routinely when I reported to my last ship in 1993 ( USS Elrod FFG-55 ). I needed a single pair of shoes I could wear while on liberty abroad. ….A pair that would look good with jeans, shorts, with or without socks, etc. Most important they needed to stow well in my coffin rack and you know how limited for space you are there.
I found my Sperry’s to be just about indestructible. I hoofed it all over Europe, the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean and Japan in them, I played softball in them, I drank beer out of them, I even went into a canal in Venice after one of them once ( drunk of course ).
They are still my “go to”, all purpose shoe to this day. The chocolate brown ones look the best in my opinion
