Portal or Recruiting?

The success of our recent recruiting so far has caused me to consider Dabo's opinion of the portal players.

With our lack of portal use, we have an increasing chance of producing top recruiting classes, since we will be recruiting more HS players while other teams are pulling from yesterday's highly ranked recruits in the portal. Our HS competition is declining somewhat.

Over time, we stand to have very high talent levels, but will have to have the best of development programs to compete against teams with a higher experience level.

The ideal scenario will be to get the top talent, develop them extremely well and figure out how to keep them for at least 3-4 years. If and once we get to where our talent has matured across the whole 1st team, we should have great teams for a long time and if we continut to recruit well, we should be able to roll one good team after another through the system.

Dabo's latest coaching changes seem to suggest his belief in this - as does our recent commitments from highly ranked players. Now we need to add some more OLs, WRs and another QB.

Recruiting is key. Otherwise, it's a rotational roster like S. Carolina, Ole Miss, A&M, Colorado, etc.

But, because of the lack of stability due to NIL and unlimited transfers (it's coming), the portal needs to be selectively utilized.

I think the rub for Dabo is to get the quality guy people are always posting just entered the portal you have to pay and pay big. I don't think he's willing to do that at the expense of taking care of the guys who are already here and committed to the program.

Hopefully he finds a happy balance because I don't see Clemson remaining relevant with zero portal usage. Don't tell me about the QB's we've added from the portal. I'm talking about a starter or at minimum someone who gets significant playing time.

To be clear, I am on board with what Dabo is trying to do.

To me, recruits commit to the school . Most portal players are not committed.

I'd take a 3*, 4* recruit over a 5* portal player everytime.

Even GA, Bama, and OSU use the portal and they bring in top 5 classes every year. There is a place for the portal. Even if you do bring in top 10 classes.

When 3rd year players leave they should be replaced with similar experience and not rely non true freshman having to come in play immediately

I agree with you somewhat on certain positions like Offensive line and maybe defensive line to a lesser extent, where there’s an advantage with more matured players. I disagree on skill positions. Wide receiver is a good example. I’d rather take my chances on a 4-5 star WR recruit than bring in a portal guy. First, we aren’t going to get a top flight skill position player in most cases bc of money. Plus, skill players can contribute early.

I feel LB and DB are players that require experience due to knowledge of playin the position and understanding what the offenses do.

We all saw Shelton Lewis get burned in the bowl game. He’s going to be a great player for us but his inexperience showed. When we lose guys like Pride and Mukuba there will be growing pains when true freshman have to come in and immediately contribute on the 2 deep.

Like I said I just feel there is a place for the portal and we shouldn’t be all or nothing. Just a couple players here and there to fill voids left by players that leave us.

I totally get what you are saying however...we need a ready made, high impact DE opposite Parker and a seasoned center. If all we did was add those two pieces, I would be ecstatic. If all we did was one or two a year to fill misevaluations and unexpected defections, I still think you can sell our program as one that puts development first. Especially when all the other schools are bringing in 7+ year after year. We would still be "different." However, just one caveat...no bidding wars, come in, perform like those already on our roster and you will be rewarded. Just my 2 cents.
