PJ Hall problems

I keep watching Clemson Basketball expecting a different result from Hall. I admit I'm more into football, and watch baseball and basketball in the "offseason" lol but try to watch most games. And PJ Hall just isn't as great IMO as people say he is. He takes sloppy shots, his make percentage without looking has to be low, and he tires so easy. I realize he's a big guy, but is that his best attribute? He's just big? Defensively he plays pretty well, but Shiefflin is better at rebounding, and we see how different it is when Chalk, Shiefflin, etc come in. Idk, I just don't see it. What say you

I think 3 for 14 from Girard and Hall cost us. Hall only got to rebounds too. The best stat of the game was that the team was 15 of 16 from 3pt range.

A senior should be able to coach hisself up some, i see the original posters concerns, i like PJ a lot, he tends to make too many stupid fouls which can take him out of rhythm of the game

He sucks so bad that he is 3rd in the ACC in scoring and 12th in rebounds. I think we need to cut him from the team because you think he is sloppy and takes bad shots.

Clearly he doesn't suck. That may be what you heard, but thats not what I said. I said he isn't as good as people say he is.

If he's 3rd in scoring AND taking that many bad shots and not rebounding, that may simply be because he's taking more shots. Idk, when he's on, he looks the part. When he's off, he looks very pedestrian. Doesn't Shiefflin looks better to you, or at least more consistent?

Shiefflin doesn't look better. He doesn't have the same abilities as Hall. A lot of Shiefflin's shots come from rebounds or dump offs from guards. Hall's points come more from plays he created, be it moves in the low post or 3 pointers (when he actually makes them). Basically, Hall can create things Shiefflin simply can't.

That said, I think there is some truth to your claim that Hall isn't as good as advertised.

So, hate to say I told you so, but clearly Hall is hot garbage. He threw every shot up without any regard for the basket. Literally just throws it up. I'm sorry, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it. Hall is big. That's it. This game proved we were better without him. Quite literally better without him. If you don't think so, you're hung up on him for whatever reason.

Players have off games. At this level coaches and teams scheme to take away the opposing teams best player. That’s when you have to have depth and other players step up. PJ is a great player. He does commit dumb fouls. Brad has said just the position he plays down low is good for two fouls per game. You don’t have many to waste when you on average have to spot two from the get go.

Actually, I just looked it up, and statistically speaking my point is proven.

PJ Hall
FG% 49.8
3 pt % 29.5
Rebounds 6.8
Free throws 80%

Shiefflin
FG% 55.9
3pt% 50
Rebounds 9.9
Free throws 82.4

So, if a guy like me, who's not even into basketball like that can see it, what's the deal? Ones an all American and ones a bench guy? Why?

Ian has been more of a project as a post player. He’s a rebounding machine. PJ is a classic post player. He has the talent to catch it down low and score. Ian is improving in the post too.

1) PJ doesn’t have strong hands. Gets stripped of possessions just about every game.

2) Gets caught off his feet on ball fakes causing bad and numerous fouls.

3) Does gets winded easily which also contributes to lazy fouls.

That being said, he is still our go to guy on offense. He’s very effective of the low post and goes strong to the rim with either hand.

49% is well above average field-goal percentage. Especially when you factor in that accounts for his 29% three-point shooting. Hall gets much more attention from the defense than the Ian does. PJ is elite in the post. When he catches the ball on the block, he’s about as good as anybody in the country at converting from there.

Having said that, there are many things about his game that does frustrate me. He makes a lot of stupid fouls. He should be able to rebound better than he does. He gets winded every game. He shouldn’t shoot as many threes as he does. It’s hurting the team. To be fair, he has had a lot of injury problems throughout his career. At the moment, Brownell says he’s dealing with some nagging injury and hasn’t practiced much the last few weeks. What do they say? Availability is the most important ability. So either he’s extremely unlucky or injury prone at this point in his career.

Will say that I think PJ is a great kid that tries very hard. I don’t think he’s going to make it in the NBA, but he’ll be a really good European player and I wish him nothing but the best.

I’ve been talking about him getting the ball stripped so easily all year. And he doesn’t go to the basket strong for a guy his size. He also commits a lot of frustration fouls right after he commits a turnover.

He is a very good player but he also has some weaknesses b

I concur with this.

PJ is a really good player, no doubt.
However, he was frustrating me to no end with the way he easily committed turnovers(which wasn't happening when other players got it in the post). I understand they were doubling him and "not letting him beat them" but you know that going in and you make quick decisions with the ball and most importantly you take care of the ball.
The frustration fouls is something else: "he is better than that"!
He has to realize how important he is to the long term success of the team!

All that said, "if he picks it up to the level he is capable and everyone else continues their high level of play including Chase; this could be one of the most challenging teams in the tournament"!

My only problem with PJ is he just does NOT know how to stay away from silly fouls that end up putting him on the bench. Fix that and he is outstanding

Teams see Hall as the best player on the team and develop game plans to stop him. Much like we wanted to stop Baylor 3 point scoring attach. It was very effective.

He's a good ball player. I don't know how good people think he is but we're more of a problem when he's in there. Missed a few short buckets late which won't do against the competition moving forward.

He can't be a role player

1

Mar 24, 2024, 8:56 PM

the reason he has been forcing bad shots and getting in foul trouble is he feels he has to make plays - with all the attention he gets, he can actually become a great role player in our offense and after making a few passes, picks, etc, the attention might drop off a little and allow him to then make some big plays - like the cut to the basket and pass from Sheff.

Going back and forth to the bench in foul trouble takes away all his rhythm - just take what comes to you and let the others step up if the defense collapses on you.

Hopefully he'll find his stride in the next two rounds, as well as Girard will find his stroke - everything tonight and first round seemed to be a tad short.

Says a ton about this group, though, that the others stepped up. If you had said PJ would be in foul trouble both games and Girard would be shooting under 33%, I wouldn't have thought we'd stood a chance.

You can see it in him, he looks exhausted at any point after the game starts.

He plays very hard, hustles, but is a bit too physical at times. He needs to know/understand when it is time to get aggressive and when it is time to let a play go and not do anything crazy like extending to commit a foul.

If he relaxes and lets the game flow and come to him, take the forced plays away, he will be just fine and dominate most every big man he plays.

I look for PJ to really focus and straighten out these issues headed into Arizona game, otherwise it will be another long night with the big men they have on that team.
