Perspective from a Tarheel/Gamecock (long)

1

Nov 28, 2022, 6:39 AM

I am a Tarheel ('83) and a Gamecock ('87.) I love Navy football and Texas A&M football because my husband graduated from both schools. We were at A&M when Jimbo Fisher arrived. However, I also love Clemson football after my brother, the Clemson grad, introduced me to Coach Dabo Swinney, back in his first few years as a head coach. I have monitored Tigernet for years. I have prayed for y'all when you list prayer requests, know about Joe21, followed along with clover65 when he shared his Vietnam stories (my husband's dissertation is about the USMC in Vietnam), read bretfsu postings, know marleyii prays through the roster (I pray for the team and staff regularly), etc. This year I even made a donation to P.A.W. Journey.

The message board has been ugly. My husband tells me I should stay away, and he is right. However, today I decided I had to post a message (something I have never done on any message board.) I know how this works - some will approve and many will complain about how money Dabo is paid or whatever. (Dabo didn't create the current payment system for coaches which is nuts in my opinion. No more proof needed than Jimbo's buyout.)

I thought some "outside" perspective might be helpful. Y'all are SO BLESSED to have a Coach like Dabo Swinney, a man who cares about not just football but about the complete development of his players in to men. Will Clemson leave a locker room trashed or allow the players to smoke cigars in the visitors' locker room after an upset - NO! His efforts to stress education and life after the players leave Clemson are why I wanted to support P.A.W. Journey.

I know Saturday was hard. I can't even watch Clemson play because I get so nervous, and I know there are problems. However, if you think this year has been tough, try being a Navy fan (or this year an Aggie fan. By the way, Jimbo signed a bunch of five stars and unlike Coach Swinney there must not have been much effort made to evaluate character because some of them have turned out to be a complete mess.) Imagine losing for 43 years straight to Notre Dame. In 2007 when the Mids beat Notre Dame to break the streak, I realized how much it all meant when I watched my husband's reaction. Plus, the worst feeling for a Navy fan is to lose to Army. My husband told me that when the Mids lose this game, it creates a pall over the Naval Academy that lasts for months.

Clemson fans have so much to be thankful for in this time of thanksgiving. You have a great Coach who I believe will figure out what changes need to be made and a football program that has accomplished amazing things the last decade which is why Saturday's defeat is so difficult. For most of you there is a tight knit community on this board that welcomes the guests from Oregon or the Florida State fan who posts on this board or you pray for each other. The negativity this year has been shocking. It seems to me the energy would be better spent building players and coaches (hope they don't look at some of these posts) up before this coming Saturday when you play for the conference championship, than to fling so much vitriol to twenty-something year old kids. Additionally, think about how your former Offensive Coordinator has spent the past week - flying around on the New England Patriots' jet with his players to attend funerals. That really puts things in to perspective. They didn't even have the chance to play their rivalry game. I'll be a Clemson fan as long as Coach Swinney has the kind of program that he does at Clemson, and I believe with that will come more opportunities to do great things - starting on Saturday. Go Tigers!

I agree with so much of your thoughtful post. We are spoiled at Clemson and Dabo is a wonderful person and I hope he stays for many years to come.

It is ridiculous how much the coaches are paid these days, but I seriously doubt there is a person alive who wouldn't sign a check for millions if it were placed in front of them. Dabo would be a fool not to take what is offered. The current market is what it is.

Having said all that, Dabo should not be immune to criticism and a cold objective assessment. It is not just fans who are questioning his coaching hires or leaving Klubnik on the bench when we had no passing attack. That goes with the territory.

It is hard to imagine that Brandon Streeter is the best OC that Clemson could have brought in. It is also hard to imagine that at this point in time that Wes is the best DC we could have hired. I hope I'm proven wrong going forward.

Loyalty goes a long way and I appreciate Dabo giving DJ the chance to prove he is an elite QB. However, by any objective measure, he is not by a long shot.

Why not at least make UNC guess a bit about our offensive plans and simply refuse to answer the question about the QB starter while telling DJ and Cade his plans in private.

We are extremely fortunate to have a man of Dabo's character and some of the criticism has been over the top, but some is justified too in my opinion.

On a side note, from my trip years ago in 96 degree heat to watch TX A&M thrash us, I will say that was without a doubt the most friendly I've ever been treated at an away game and that was both pre and post game.

I also took in the Army-Navy game a few years ago in snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain in Philly. Despite all that, it was an awesome experience and though as a former Air Force member I don't have a dog in that hunt, I was pulling for Navy.

Great Post. Really that South Carolina Quit with the Trick plays and the fumbles killed us after the like Dabo always says the Last 5 minutes of the 1st half and First Drive of the Second half are important and neither one we took advantage of. If we scored touchdowns to end 1st half and a touchdown to open 2nd half no way Gamecocks would have come back. No O line blocking receivers can't get open felt like the Georgia game last season.

Clemson has passed out cigars in the past and I have seen the photos. If the locker room got trashed that’s not right. But don’t confuse intentionally trashed with some stuff was left on the floor or chairs were out of place. Most visitor locker rooms are in disarray since the teams have buses and planes to catch. Was it really “trashed” or is that just fans that are disgruntled with the loss saying this so they can be more disgruntled?

Also, I agree it’s comical to even hint at getting rid of a coach that has won two titles recently, and has you in the playoffs most years. Win your bowl game and you are 11-2. That’s #### good. Most teams would kill for the last 8 years you have had.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

who on this board is saying anything about getting rid of

Nov 29, 2022, 11:49 AM

Dabo? I believe you're reading into the complaints too much or its wishful thinking on your part. This is about 2 to 3 years of the same glaring issues. And obviously its from those of us who are not in the coaching meetings. Hopefully it vacates as soon as the current sub-personnel vacates. But i've yet to see anyone mention DAbo as the one that needs to go. Unless they have a sub 50% pulse rate like yourself on Tigernet.

For Clemson fans we have seen what championship teams look and feel like on the field and we notice that we are sliding down the hill the past two years and it seems to be the same issues. "Is there a fix on this team" is the question. Dabo has shown and acted as if the fix is not on the sidelines. So the confusion is just that.

And losing to a rival that its own fanbase didn't even believe in their team, didn't help. Its like a wasted resources given to a group that you never want to give freebies to. Its like giving charity to a scammer. Just not a good feeling and people were frustrated.

Charley Pell passed out cigars in 1977 and 1978 but the school and/or ACC made them stop. In 1977 UofSC players had on No Cigar Today tee shirts under their uniforms and started showing them just before Jerry Butler made his game winning, leaping catch in the endzone!

Great post but how can someone ,seemingly, be so nice and thoughtful and be a gamecock fan ? That is an oxymoron. Just for clarity, this board has been toxic since Saturday and I added to that. However, go back and look at the gamecock board and see that board since Game 1. We both can have ugly boards at times.

Tremendous post. The most important thing to keep in mind about Tigernet is that majority here don’t support Clemson or have anything to do with Clemson.

That said, we do have some tremendous people who do support and love Clemson on this forum. You’ve already found some of the best ones, and don’t forget, there’s an ignore button for posters you’d simply had enough of.

Thanks again for your perspective. I’m glad you’re part of this place.

All the complainers let's just get to 11-2 Win the ACC get to the Orange Bowl win it be 12-2 End season in top 8 or even top 6. We will either play Alabama or Tennessee. Hope this loss to South Carolina will light a fire under these players and Coaches. South Carolina is 8-4 and will either be 9-4 or 8-5 with no Conference Championship. With TB we use to beat top 10 teams but still couldn't win the ACC. See the same for South Carolina. Texas and Oklahoma coming into the SEC soon so South Carolina will have an even tougher time trying to win the SEC.

Thanks for the responses. As a side note we spent decades during my husband's active duty USMC time making fun of Aggies (easy to do) and then he became one! We had five of the greatest years of our lives in College Station. Some of the nicest people anywhere. Aggies pride themselves on their hospitality towards opponents' fans. This being said, when he asked me what I wanted for my 61st birthday in Oct, I told him I wanted to make a donation to P.A.W. Journey. Not the answer he anticipated but after all of the articles and videos I have sent him about Clemson football, he knows how much this gift meant to me. Go Tigers!

Thank you for perhaps was one of the best posts I have seen recently! It offered a welcome perspective. My father was a Clemson grad ('49) and an officer in the USAF. My son is a Navy grad ('01) and seved in the USMC in combat (Iraq, Afghanistan, and a couple of unknown places). We are both fervent Clemson and Navy fans. My Texas mom was a huge Aggies fan and I work with a number of Aggies. Lots of love here! I appreciated your reasoned and heartfelt post and you are welcome to post in Tigernet anytime. You are a valuable voice in our community. I, too, was terribly disappointed in our game this past week. There are issues that need addressing and I trust that Coach Swinney will right the ship. Blessings and Merry Christmas to you!

Nov 29, 2022, 2:20 PM

We know we are blessed to have Dabo, he has been the best thing to have happened to Clemson and Clemson FB like forever. Dabo is the one that has us spoiled and use to winning, and it was Dabo that hired Streeter and Goodwin as our coordinators when neither one of them would have ever been hired as coordinators for the coots or tarholes, and to be matter of fact, neither of them could have gotten hired as coordinators at lower-level universities, and there are some HS that wouldn't have hired either of them as coordinators. Dabo dropped the ball, and he enjoyed all the years that he has been praised as our Tiger HC, so he should be able to own up the criticism bc it was his call to hire at the lowest level for a program that has won 2 NCG's, and played in 6 playoff games, 2nd to Bama as the #1 playoff team. IMO, Dabo brought all this criticism on himself, his fan base didn't have a choice in the low-level hires he made for a Clemson FB program that was titled as elite. And the 2 QB's that won a NCG each, they were backups and he didn't hesitate to pull the then starters to play Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, and the 2 QB's he pulled, they were much better than DJ!!!!

I appreciate your well thought out remarks. Those who support my university have no equal and I am delighted that I am a small, part of this amazing university. Like many others, we have “fans” who have little or no idea what it’s like to be a real Tiger, And they never will. Some go out of their way to criticize our coaches and players with little or no feelings about the damage that they do. In my long life I have met many who know everything and a lot of those characters post their cruel remarks here. Please forgive them! Your donation to Paw Journey tells me all that I need to know about you and your family. Go Tigers

Thanks for an outside perspective. I know we have gotten spoiled, but I remember when we hoped for an ACC Championship game and/or going to the Orange Bowl. Even 10-win seasons would have been very pleasing.
While all have the right to question things. Where Clemson is right now with all the adversity this year is still very good. I have lived through much worse seasons more times than I want to admit.

Great post and I feel sure most Clemson fans realize the truth in that. There's been a big buildup of emotional angst over the past few years (sports media assisted) and many on tnet have let it overrun their common sense reasoning. Maybe this season is the opportunity to purge much of the harmful diatribe and get re-focused on appreciating what we have while keeping an eye on what we still strive to become. Thanks so much for your perspective.
