We are in trouble on offense. Passes from CK, Helms, and CV (2 pics) were not on time. Only Pearman looked sharp.
Our receivers never got separation. Unless Dabo was holding back we are in trouble.

Defense- strong, especially Woods.

Kickers were ok.

I don't agree about the timing of the QBs, that was fine if you know what you're looking for. But you are right that the receivers couldn't get separation at all.

Think about it this way.

Our top RB did not play.

Half the OL didn't play, or was split between two units. We had a lot of freshmen and even mid-years blocking up front.

No Collins, Randall, Stelatto or Taylor.

VERSUS

Our starting defense last year minus the guys who declared for the draft and XT.

If I told you no more, how do you think it went? You would be right.

Now add in the factor that we aren't going to give away anything special in terms of plays. Riley would make the call, tell Dabo, then Dabo tells the announcers where the play is intended to go. These guys have been at it long enough to not tip their hand full of playing cards.

All that being said, the backs looked good. We are honestly five deep in good running backs and the sixth guy is pretty decent too. I hoped our passing game would be stronger, but it will take time. It had its moments. We had a few big plays that would probably set us up for touchdowns against defenses that aren't as good as ours. QBs would have picked up more yards on the ground if not for wearing purple jerseys and playing tag football rules, so you have to imagine that our RPO was pretty much just the back getting it, and not CK or HH scrambling very much.

Peter Woods is going to be a problem for opponents. 7 tackles and a blocked extra point.

He's as good as the experts SAID Chase Young was going to be. Top five pick in three years if he stays healthy and conditioned. (He looked a little heavy out there today.)

I would also add to you break down of the offense, Riley has had 15 practices with the offense. Riley was calling plays to the TE’s over the middle. That’s a huge plus.

If you are in ‘pain’ after today with all things included then you just have unreasonable expectations.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We had the most productive TE season in 2022 since Jordan Leggett in 2016.

I’m not sure what Clemson offense you watched over the last 2 years but a major issue with the offense was that the middle of the field was not used. That is common knowledge at this point

Agreed. Only comment is that Shipley isn't the top running back. He was announced as being on the second string team prior to his being unavailable. Dabo confirmed that the group with Cade were the starters (so Mafah).

I guess you know more than Dabo? Shipley's the backup. He'll still get a ton of playing time because of his versatility, but it's obvious Mafah's the better running back, and that's been confirmed by his being named the starter.

He wasn't named the starter. For the spring game, sure, because shipley isn't playing. Dabo himself said shipley was only out because of tendinitis. If it was a game, he'd be playing. Mafah is a great running back. Shipley is All American style. The offense literally runs through shipley. You're high if you think Shipley isn't the starter.

Only because the coaches loooovvve him.

No, Dabo had confirmed that Shipley was limited and thus would be out.

Mafah did not beat him out. He was held out of the game. Him being put on Orange was a side effect of him already not going to be playing.

Re: Ok Guys give me the Skinny on Today..

That is false. It was a gametime decision to not play Shipley. Hood told us that today. You're free to ask him. Shipley was announced on the orange team early this week. I don't know why you're so upset that our better back is the starter.

Not upset about anything. Let the best man play. Put a Swinney in the backfield if it will help us win.

What Dabo said is that he's been dealing with tendonitis in the knee for a while. If he's at 70%, then I am pretty certain he's not still better than a 100% Mafah.

I don't mind one bit Mafah running with the 1s. If he's our feature back, I don't care. I have been somewhat disappointed in Shipley--never in his effort, just like he's not been as good as advertised or something.

Re: Ok Guys give me the Skinny on Today..

Apr 15, 2023, 6:09 PM [ in reply to Re: Ok Guys give me the Skinny on Today.. ]

It's simple to explain. Our defense played as if there was less of a threat for the QB to run as DJ imposed his sophomore year. If they don't have to play honestly, it would be tough for an NFL team to score on them.

Also consider that they had not run this offense until the Spring. I thought that the offensive line played decent early. They seemed to tire but that's understandable trying to push around our dline. The running backs looked pretty good. The tight ends looked good. Noble is going to be good, so I think that we will be alright at WR if we can get everybody back healthy.

As several have said, Woods is the real deal and Kahlil Barnes looked really good at DB. The defense looked a lot better on the back half than last year. The defense is going to be strong, but we always expect them to be.

I'm excited for September, but I always am.

Boring game as usual but Barnes looked good on defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

About what you would expect for Spring

2

Apr 15, 2023, 5:58 PM

The bad: Besides Antonio Williams, WR really looked on par as last year's issues. Lacking speed, lacking separation, lacking fight to the ball. Grisham still has major work to do. Let's hope the absent WR's will bring something Collins, Randall, Stellato (none of these played). We need time and I hope coaches know if standout WR will come from one of the injured guys otherwise transfer portal may also need to be option. Time may be needed with new coach, new QB and new system. WR's still a concern and looks on par as last year.

Biggest standout: a man among boys is Woods #11 freshman defensive lineman on Orange team. He looked great and had 5 tackles and a sack in only the first half of play. Also blocked an extra point and will remind you of the Dexter Lawrence days. A great addition!

Defense looked good with LB's looking great. Trotter leading in tackles, Barnes came up with a big hit and INT, Wiggins and DB's seemed more aggressive but they know the plays well. Defensive line will give other teams problems.

Defense will be a strength, RB's and TE's a strength.

Offensive plays: in just a limited time of practice with us, Riley accomplished getting the ball several times to Tight Ends that will also be a strength for us and he had them catch it in the middle of the field. Barningstool, Ennis, Pope all get in the action multiple times in middle of the field. Kudos to Riley for improving that already.

Offensive line has some big boys but hard to tell if progress made as there were also a few starters out. But Zach Owens #72 was bigger then Fridge Perry by a lot and will be a good addition too.

Running backs-solid and good performance by #20 D Thomas and Keith Adams Jr. Phil M and Shipley will be wonderful to have but Shipley did not play as he was in shorts. Feel good about RB.

QB: Cade was fine, missed Cole on a deep ball I believe as he came up short. Had two interceptions that were from two tipped balls. Accuracy better than QB we saw last year-no balls at the WR feet and no balls flying over an open WR's head which was good. Looked like Cade from before but his O Line and WR will determine how much he can do this year. Tyson started out looking good actually at QB. Thought I would see more out of Vizzia and Helms but nothing really stood out. Most seemed vanilla but we did try to go deep balls on a few occasions (incomplete). Kudos for trying.

Great day, good crowd, nice video board work that made the Spring Game a little more exciting and informative with good video work in breaks, good music to pump up crowd. I feel better about defense and TE's and finding offensive plays over the middle, and potential at QB if WR and OLine can step up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A lot of linemen today are bigger than Fridge.***

Apr 15, 2023, 6:32 PM

and we're playing each other. Defense looked strong and offense needs more work. Klubnick looked good at times but sputtered at times as well. Helms looked like a capable back up for the most part, but I don't know how far we'd go with him if Cade goes down. Vizzina physically looks great. Big, strong, can really run and can sling it, but he's still 17 yrs old and still raw and learning and developing.

Peter Woods is as we'd heard, and will be a guy our opponnents will have to plan and account for all year. The talent is obvious all over on the defensive side of the ball.

Kicking game looked pretty dang good from a bunch of guys I've never heard of.

Oline really played well for the most part, especially considering the NFL-caliber DLine talent they were facing. I definitely think we are improved there.

Overall, we have more good young talent than I can remember in a long time. If a couple of guys can emerge from our WR group when all are here and healthy, we should be improved this year. Those are my main takeaways and observations, but for a good, more indepth breakdown, I though David Hood nailed it: https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/spring-game-observations-offense-missing-key-pieces-peter-woods-leads-mid-years-21225

QB’s are average
Wr’s are below average, even the injured ones
OL is average
Rb’s are good, even the ones not named mafah/Shipley
Defense has a chance to be very special
Peter Woods is the best player on the team!!!

Either our defensive linemen are unblockable, or our offensive linemen cannot block. I haven't figured it out yet. To me, the offense looked just like last year with missed blocks and little midgets running around with no apparent function. A QB doesn't have much of a chance to hit one of these little dudes since they seem slow, in addition to be vertically challenged. Until the OL gets better and we get some WR's that can get open and fight for balls, we don't have an offense. Running game and TE's over the middle are all we have right now.

These are back up D lineman your talking about. Ruke, TD, and XT did not play. Mascoll played limited snaps. A couple more hurt - P Page (?). I get tired of hearing how great the defense is. Secondary was lit up last year and ND destroyed our D line (BB being hurt a part of that). We are loaded at DT no question. At end? Not so much. Undersized and won't hold up against ND. Unless Woods moves to DE which would mostly solve that issue. Backers are good but thin. Sure, just about anyone we threw out there on D held their own or better against the O. Lawson is running second team D end (along with Denhoff) at 230 lbs? A 230 lb DE at a Power 5 school? That's barely linebacker size. We can stop talking about the best DL in the country after ND, SC, and a UT offense that was missing 90% of its playmakers. Reality has not sunk in yet. We will scratch and claw and hopefully find a way to win the ACC.
