Offensive Tempo vs Defensive Effectiveness in 2023

Looking back at Clemson under Dabo there have been a few trends that are fun to watch. One of those is the balance of Offensive Explosiveness vs Defensive Effectiveness. The TLDR version is I think the combination in 2023 is going to be very effective.

When Dabo took over he wanted to transition to a spread up tempo offense. He tried to do it internally with Billy Napier and hired Kevin Steel at DC.

Defense was effective. Offense struggled to achieve what Dabo wanted.

When the offense didn’t click he hired Chad Morris. Morris’ offense was up tempo and stressed Kevin Steel’s defense resulting in WVU. The offense either scored or went three and out and left Steel’s defense on the field too long.

Dabo went out and hired a DC who was accustomed to the up tempo offense of the Big 12.

BV approach was very risk/reward. Take bigger risk to get the ball back to your offense. If it doesn’t work your defense gets off the field to avoid fatigue over the course of a game.

Morris departs and the offense stays up tempo, but the new coordinators stick with what is working relying on exceptional talent at the QB position. We win in 2016 and more of the same. 2018 Trever wins and cements to the staff that we can keep winning with the same strategy due to superior talent.

As the offense becomes less explosive the defense under BV also adapts and takes less risk. Keeping the ball in front of them and not giving up the big play.

VB leaves and the known creative in WG takes more chances and gives up more plays. Additionally the offense has regressed so they can no longer score to correct misses on defense.

2023 Dabo hires Riley to rejuvenate the Clemson offense. Bringing big plays back to Clemson should fit well with Goodwin’s aggressive mindset and bring us back to the 2018 balance across both sides of the ball.

Go Tigers!

I approve this assessment.

1 problem. Wes Goodwin blitzes less than Brent Venables. It got better as the year went on, but it was excruciating at the beginning. I suspect this was due to DB experience (if DL and LBs don't get there, your freshman on an island is in trouble) coupled with DL who really didn't play up to their potential (for plenty of legit reasons).

I'm a fan of blitzing guys who you know can get there. If they can't, don't blitz them. But if they can, bring em all the time.

Not according to data from PFF

Where Goodwin was different was in Blitz Rate.

In ‘21, Venables had a total Blitz Rate (BR) of 22.5%, which put the Tigers at 20th in the Power 5 (P5)—compared to Goodwin in ‘22, who had a BR of 37.8%, the 10th highest in the P5 according to PFF.

I think you may have been right early on but Venables made adjustments as the offensive philosophy changed. A sign of a good coordinator but I believe it pulled us further from what made us great instead of forcing a change on the offensive side. Hopefully we have corrected now.

What I observed of Venables’ defensive alignments and adjustments was that he started every game attempting to control the LOS, stop the run and pressure the passer out of the 4-3-4 / 4-2-5 alignment. He wasn’t bringing the blitzes unnecessarily.

I often thought he waited a little long before he adjusted with bringing backside help up. But his adjustments were invariably very good and seemed to have the desired effect. He was also one of the best I’ve seen at disguising blitzes. Quarterbacks has a hard time figuring it out.

Didn't realize that. I definitely believe Venables played more cover 0 though. Seems to me like when he brought people he brought everyone. It's possible I'm remembering wrong, or emphasizing the beginning of the season more, just seems to me like Venables brought the house all the time and Wes doesnt.

I do agree with that. Venables was much more likely to bring the house than Goodwin. Goodwin’s approach feels much more strategic and Brent was more feel during the game. Both can work and I think the more critical thing is to prepare your team to adjust as quickly as you do. If the offense seizes momentum and their defense is on its heels go after the ball to put your offense back on the field. It may not always work but when it does you can put a game out of reach in a hurry.

Cleveland. He said they had to get to the QB in 2.5 seconds. And NFL corners could cover anybody for 2.5 seconds...but THEY HAD TO GET THERE IF THEY WERE BRINGING THE BLITZ. Last year, Bresee was not effective all year for reasons out of his control. But, he just did not get the job done. Miles Murphy went Jadaveon Clowney...gave about a 75% effort..There were plays he possibly could have made that would have won the South Carolina game. Same thing for Simpson. Then both bailed in the bowl game. First CLemson players to do that.

I am a firm believer that this year's dline will be much more productive than last year's. Annnnd, I think Wes will be much more comfortable calling his defense DURING the game....

JMHO.

Goodwin seems less aggressive to me than BV

Also looking forward to being truly up tempo again because I don't feel like we have been in quite awhile.

They've been calling it "up-tempo", but it's seemed more like a hurry up and wait kind of thing. I think a lot of that has had to do with personnel on both sides of the ball though.
