Note to self, Joe Girard ain't no Point Guard and ...

Whilst he is very good at hitting long range shots (when he's hot) it is full of peril when he thinks he's Steve Nash. Emphasize let someone dribble around in a heavy, vigorous defense.

And,
Emphasize to the Lads ALWAYS to work the ball "in" FIRST ... just because someone hits a 3 early in the game does not mean the game is now a big game of HORSE. None of you can shoot the 3 with NBA like reliability.

Great point on working the ball inside out! The better teams all do this. Notice how every color announcer notices this about Clemson. Most of them question BB’s allowing PJ to take all his 3’s. Agree on Girard as well. Great shooter once in his zone, but a liability moving with the ball and his defense.

I was always coached (granted a long time ago) but you work the ball inside to out every chance you get. It really forces a shooter to have his shoulders square to the basket.

ALL announcers go to great lengths to build up a coach. They even did it for Tommy Bowden. You can totally ignore brown nosing by announcers. It means nothing.

Why would Bill Self care about Girard's handles?

I'll repeat what I said last night he's averaging only 1.7 turnovers a game an hits 95% of his free throws. Last night he played 31 minutes and had 1 turnover; that's right 1. We could do a lot worse than having the ball in his hands.

How many assists did he have?

How many times did he make the defense respect a drive to the basket?

Zero, right?

Not too good with the basketball knowledge doh. You should stick to TD'ing without commenting. At least then we can only guess how little you understand the game.

So he maintained his roughly .5 assist/turnover ratio. Are we under the impression that’s good for a point guard?

I think Girards 43% three point fg stat would argue that point. Joe has to take over the point at times because Hunter disappears. Joe had quite a few assists last night. More than our point guard did. Girard will play in the NBA and will make a boat load of threes. He’s only top ten in college history.

I get your frustration. It’s not with Joe. It’s with the coach. They are running Brownell’s offense. Which is high school level at best. The Notre Dame homer had it right. We should have been playing high low game with Chef and Hall shooting from the paint. Notre Dame couldn’t stop it. We kept hurling threes and suffered far too many empty possessions. Hire an offensive specialist coach to compliment Brownell. Better yet, hire the next coach Hurley and send Brownell back to Wilmington or Indiana.

NBA? No chance.

No, I don't think he's athletic enough to play in the NBA. Would be a huge liability on defense. He's a fantastic shooter but needs multiple screens while moving without the ball to be effective. 24 second clock in the NBA favors those that can create their own shot. Joe cannot do that at the next level. Mark Price would be the closest that was successful, but he's much quicker and more physical at roughly the same size while being an equivalent shooter.

When did the NBA start playing defense? I think Girrard will play for somebody. Hornets, Pistons, Spurs, Grizzlies maybe?

No chance he will have a career in the NBA. ### far as D, they only play D in big games...playoffs etc.

I see where you're coming from. But as geech pointed out, his overall turnover numbers are actually pretty good. I think he's just had a couple of very unfortunate ones in big moments at the end of games that stuck in people's minds. Plus he's not an elite driver, so people don't tend to think of him as a dribbler. But he's actually pretty good at ball security on the dribble, probably better than people give him credit for. And he can actually drive and score from time to time if the defense isn't honest, though that certainly isn't his main strength.
