Thoughts on the program...

Nov 7, 2022, 11:26 AM

My freshman year in 1998 we were 3-8. We survived the roller coaster ride of the Tommy B. years that followed, perhaps some of you forget who Dabo Swinney is.. We literally just won 14 games in a row! Repeat that out loud. The sky is not falling. We have some obvious gaps in our team right now, and I think 90% of us knew deep down inside the performance that we had this past Saturday night was coming at some point this season, I am just glad it wasn't in the CFP as it would have had a more damaging effect to the psyche of our program and fanbase. With that being said, Dabo is a winner. He isn't just hiring buddies and passing out coordinator jobs like candy, he has 2 national championships and even a season last year that was by all accounts our worst season in a decade, we still had 10+ wins.

Dabo isn't naive, he sees the issues more than we do, but he isn't going to broadcast it to the world, he is going to fix it. That is his job as the leader of this program, and his track record more than speaks for itself. Cade is extremely talented but he isn't ready to takeover the starting QB slot yet, so Dabo is trying to balance things and keep this team as focused as possible this season. Other than Alabama, there isn't another program as consistent as Clemson year in and year out. We may need a couple years here to adjust things (starting last season) to get back on top, but we will return...

Maybe, we'll see if he does what needs to be done....

he had a perfect opportunity to correct this last offseason with the coordinator hires, but didn't.

you say 90% of us knew deep down this performance was coming........not sure I agree with that, considering those who did see it and comment on our subpar performances this year have been BLASTED by the masses on here............but Dabo himself said "I wish I could say I saw this coming"..........that's a problem........the EYE TEST this year in the previous 8 games tells you IT'S COMING

It is extremely difficult to go undefeated, even Dabo only has 1 undefeated season, despite 2 national championships. When we went down 21-7 at home against Syracuse, despite coming back to win it, I knew that we were going to have an extremely difficult time running the table this year and eventually have a game where nothing would go right for us. Unfortunately, it happened on the road against an ND team with a chip on their shoulder that is riding some momentum. Our special teams and offense gave up 14 points (blocked punt, pix six), plus the interception deep in our zone that lead to a TD for ND. That is 21 points out of the 35 they scored against us, and essentially ties the game. We let the game get away from us and right now just don't have the horsepower on the offensive side to push through it.

It's not just the one loss....that's the issue......

Nov 7, 2022, 11:51 AM

Our wins this year have blinded our fans.......and the coaches on how flawed we truly are. I posted below yesterday.......it's been a trend all year.........and it goes back to 2019 when it started, but since we were in the NC game and made playoffs in 2020 everyone turned a blind eye to the real issues playing "ELITE" teams:

It finally caught up to us b/c the talent of the opposing team was similar to ours. Fans always say....."just win baby", but an honest fan has to look at HOW you win.......that's called "THE EYE TEST".......just look at our offensive and defensive numbers.

The game within the game:
GT (4-5) - we were up 14-3 at HALF...ok, first game let's give a pass
Furman (FCS) - 28-9 at HALF....score ONE TD in 2nd half.........huh?, odd......final 35-12
La Tech (3-6!!) - up 13-6 at HALF...........this is now a TREND
@ Wake (6-3, 2-3 in conference) - DOUBLE OT W??........somehow viewed as a great win even though Wake had only beaten VMI, Vandy, & Liberty at the time........they were also a "SIGNATURE WIN" to falsify our #4 ranking last week........now about to be unranked
NCState (7-2) - probably our most complete game vs a solid team, but in the valley at night, NCstate never had a chance, but hey maybe we have something brewing??.....
Boston College (2-7) - THE SECOND RED FLAG - 10-7 at Half.........enough said.
FSU (6-3) - up 34-14 going into 4th quarter and our coaches.....being the coaches they are sit on it.......comes down to a recovered onside kick to seal it.....2015-2018 teams cut the throat at 34-14, but not this one.........killer instinct is lacking in the program
Syracuse (7-3) - another "signature win" to falsify our ranking.........ABYSMAL performance, but hey "just win baby".......right?????
ND (6-3) - won a close game with 5&5 BYU and 3&6 Cal........also got bullied at home by Marshall & Stanford..................35-14 beatdown!!

Completely agree... We had a enough talent to tip the scales in our favor in close game when the opposition was lacking the athletes we have, however when we get to the home stretch and bowl season, we don't have the firepower to play with the big boys right now. I would disregard ND's record this season, they are a very hot team and playing at the level of a Top 10 program at the moment, which shows we are not capable of playing consistently at that level last season or this season. We don't have a Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence running the offense, these guys were both generational level talent and we need to remind ourselves that. Perhaps Cade will be at that level, but he isn't at the moment and in my opinion isn't ready to take over the offense yet, whereas both Deshaun and Trevor were in their Freshman seasons. It doesn't mean Cade won't hit that level, he just isn't ready. So that leaves us with DJ and trying to tweak an offense that conks out every few games. If DJ starts poorly against Louisville, Dabo may have no choice but to put Cade in there and perhaps build for next season.

I’m not sure I saw an absolutely man handling loss like that , but really the ppl that are saying calm down the sky is not falling don’t get it… ppl are upset bc yes we have won a lot of games in a terrible conference the last couple years but we have big time issues on the offensive side of the ball and it’s literally at every position except maybe RB/TE… line, playcalling, qb, and especially at WR… there have been a couple questionable hires and ppl questioned when it happened and called coots… and I for one trusted Dabo and didn’t say anything but now it’s very very obvious we should revamp the offense and get someone with some new ideas and some experience to help … I mean this started Trevor’s last year imo the offense has been pathetic and it’s all parties..

With that said I think Dabo had a vision for how he wanted to start this “Clemson/Dabo coaching tree” and it’s just not working… we are still at a place where we can hire anyone we want on either side of the ball and I trust he will make it right sooner rather than later before that shine completely wears off

just recall for the boo birds...

1. ND was a pre season number 5, they are starting to play to that hype level.

2. The defense gave up 14 points (if you don't count the short field after the INT), that's it.

3. Offense was making positive yards on the play calls, it was execution that failed. Specifically #80 on the first series. He completely whiffed on a block to the perimeter, loss of yardage on a play where if he makes the block Shipley (I think) has the boundary for positive. Held on the perimeter block, positive yards turned to more negative yards. Next play; a ticky tack holding call but yet another play where he did not get his body on the other guys body, poor technique. And then the punt. Blocker split the gap on the O-line and then split the gap on the 3 protection blockers, they did not do much to stop him.

4. Speaking of offense; no use of the middle of the field, none for 3 quarters... Streeter or Dabo? Not like ND had the center of the field covered. More than once saw Mafah wide open 5-10 yards in the middle of the field and DJ throwing bombs to the boundary and not good passes... get to the checkdown already.

5. I wish DJ had the talent and mentality that could push us over the top but he needs more development and I don't think he's going to get that at Clemson... nor can Clemson afford another development year if the idea is to win championships.

6. Cade brings energy to the offense, he not be as seasoned as DJ but he has all the tools in the chest. He needs to start seeing the field regularly and not in bad spots so he can get a rhythm and some time with the 1's in live play.

Go Tigers.

Spot on with Cade. He doesn’t need to be put in when the wheels have come off. Also We are 9 games in BC should know how to block by now along with the rest of the WRs.

GO TIGERS!!!

I agree!

I see this as perhaps a step or two back to hopefully; "force changes" to end up going 4 steps or more forward!

WR blocking included!

The OL to me has been hit or miss! For sure not living up to its potential.
The DL has perhaps been the most disappointing aspect of the team this year! Even with the injuries; we are deep on the DL! Seems like players would have been taking more advantage of their time to make plays. But, perhaps this forces more "mirror work"! I believe that is happening already: "More" is the key word there!

Unless you are ready with a skillset and mentality to play in the NFL already, why would you as a QB come to Clemson? Antique offense and play calling, and absolutely positively no QB development. DJ hasn’t gotten it yet and so so obviously never will , and Klubnik is no closer to starting next year than he was when he unpacked his bags on campus! Add to that list of issues no ability to evaluate. Dabo and Streeter admitted it, we didnt see this coming. I dont know how many touches Shipley had. I have to say, when the ship is going down as hard and fast as it was in South Bend, I need to see Hunter Johnson out there, I need to see Freshmen receivers out tbere, I need to see everything and everyone all in trying to make that happen. I saw none of that. Dabo has lost his way. He has to change, period.

We Good! Are My Thoughts!

Nov 7, 2022, 12:49 PM

Ohio State, Michigan, and Texas get credit for being perennial powerhouse schools annually. Among other schools; like the one that just boat raced us.

One can't expect to go undefeated yearly!

To expect that is to have unrealistic expectations.

Dabo has shown "he likes to win"! It won't be tolerated for a long time. I have faith/trust he will have the offense back to where it should be.

I think Coach Goodwin will only get better!

You learn more from failure folks! Remember the sting of W. Virginia? We got better b/c of it. Same with the little 5 in a row.

We good.

Yeah, the WVU game was a turning point but it resulted in a new D-coordinator. Don't know if we need another one on D but we certainly do on the offensive side of the ball. Since Dabo saw that way back after WVU, I suspect he sees it now. Problem is, we're in mid-season. The WVU game was the last one of the year and he could make the switch right away. I don't see him making a switch on the offense (coordinator) until after the season...
