Mafahs missed block

2

Sep 25, 2023, 8:55 AM

Ok football guru’s, please help me understand something

Was the play call for play action to the left a gap? (Sure looked like it)

Did the pressure come from a db in the right B gap? (Definitely did)

Is it reasonable to expect a RB running a play action at the left A gap to read db pressure from the right B gap?

If the coaches say he missed the block or the assignment I only see two possibilities:

1. Mafah didn’t know the play call and it wasn’t supposed to be play action and he was supposed to stay back

2. It was play action and the coaches are asking him to do the impossible

Where am I wrong?

I had this same reaction. The fake was to the left. I think possibly Mafahs initial read was no pressure so he continued to drift left and started to go out on the route. He probably was supposed to stay home longer and survey before continuing to go up field. Just a good timed blitz. Wish cade could have somehow saw that guy coming from his front side but thats football.

I watched this play down the QB line of site but from 40yds

Sep 25, 2023, 9:10 AM

away

nothing looked like a missed block at all . that was a TNET theory i saw.
In real life and from my perspective.

Cade was looking left or up the middle
he should have thrown 2 times prior to getting hit

then he got absolutely trucked

this is on him

It's his first, last and only job, to pick up the hot.

Well if thats his job, he shouldnt be running play action - right?

Sep 25, 2023, 9:38 AM

How’s he supposed to get back to the right B gap if he’s taking play action to the left A gap?

Did he run the wrong play?

You can keep saying his job is to pick up the hot…

but motioning a guy up into the line and expecting him to pick up an outside blitz from the secondary is asking for trouble.

I think it’s a poorly designed play if they are expecting him to pick that block up. That guys getting through 9 times out of 10 on a play action pass. Don’t care if Wayne Gallman was back there.

Play action? It was a quick mesh, common in "21" personnel..

2

Sep 25, 2023, 9:45 AM

considering the action.

Mafah did as he should, squatted down in front of Cade, then failed to swivel right. The game is played with eyes, reads, keys and the assignment there is any HOT.

That HOT is any free hat on the defensive side. Clearly the defender is coming and clearly Mafah failed to do his job.

Only after Mafah has accounted for every hat is a release an option. He even released poorly into the LB, when the space was all right.

Mafah being in the wash was on Mafah, because he failed to finish his assignment on the offensive right.

Sep 25, 2023, 10:28 AM

Ok, I’ll buy that.

If he’s supposed to mesh and squat there, that would explain it

Looked like a super quick release on the mesh though

I’ll bet a better look there would have frozen that blitzer too

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What does "21" personnel have to do with it though?

Sep 25, 2023, 11:56 AM [ in reply to Play action? It was a quick mesh, common in "21" personnel.. ]

I didn’t see 2 RB’s on the field?

21 is two rb’s and a TE, right?

Could have used an extra one back there on that play though 🤣

blitzer, FOR AWHILE, but the guy came in so late that he was going to his pass pattern by then. Pointless to assign blame now, but with better peripheral vision, Cade would at least have been able to hold onto the ball and take a sack, or throw it away. Done is done now, though, can't get it back.

Yes, but only if the game was played by blind people...

You're wrong in trying to overthink it. Mafah Pretty out for a pass instead of staying in to block. Pretty simple. Even the announcers thought that's what happened.

I can see why Mafah did it, as the blitz came so late. I would also have preferred Klubnik to throw the ball sooner, even if he did think he had protection. He had been successful up to that point by throwing the ball quickly.

I wouldn’t place all blame on Mafah. Cade held the ball too long if he is going to look 45 degrees left of center and never glance back right to check his exposed side. Get rid of it or begin to check your pocket - tick tock tick tock in your head. 70-30 Mafah-Cade. None of it would have mattered if we hadn’t mucked up about 7 other things anyway. It’s a team game.

To me, I looked like the Offense mis read the load and had a blocking scheme on that is one man short of being able to pick up a blitz.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The pressure didnt come from a CB/DB

3

Sep 25, 2023, 10:44 AM

It came from the OLB that showed man coverage on a WR. Mafah appears to have focused on the DE on our left that dropped into coverage, taking his attention away from the right side. Well designed and executed blitz

Or maybe it was the exact right defensive play call at the exact perfect time against an offensive play call that by design was not prepared for that particular defensive call. Is it possible that all the stars just aligned and nobody on the offense really made a mistake at all? Could it be an offensive play that by its very design could not defend against that particular defensive play is what I am saying. It could be like that offensive play call at the right time that leaves a receiver 30 yards downfield for a completely uncovered touchdown pass because the defense called to defend something else.
Not being any kind of an expert here, just thinking through all the possibilities. Just maybe it is not about what Clemson did wrong as much as what FSU did right? I don't want to admit that though.

Otherwise, it's back to coaching. The defense was not read right by the QB who may have looked to change the play call based on his read of the defense, or Mafah missing an optional assignment because he did not understand the threat, or Cade by lack of coaching did not get the ball out fast enough. To me, if it is Clemson's fault it comes down to not understanding something they should have understood which then comes back to coaching.

it was an excellent call, at the right time, but that is no excuse for Mafah missing his assignment.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was well timed defensive call

Sep 25, 2023, 12:43 PM [ in reply to Re: Mafahs missed block ]

it was a delayed blitz from deep, only got there because it was a deep drop, slow dev. pass play.

A run play would have been much better, because the box was light, FSU had all the receivers covered and were playing pass from the get go.

If you watch, the blitzer was still far from the LOS when Mafah left the box, there wasn't a hot rush anywhere close to the pocket. The only real hope was for Cade to sense the rush and get rid of it or at least protect the ball.

From my view the guard on the right didn't do squat on that

play. The end went wide and the tackle blocked him. That made a big hole. The guard didn't block anyone and could (should?) have seen the late blitz and done something on the play instead of nothing.

Mafah HAS to make sure that offside safety is not coming. That is HIS responsibility. He did not even look to see if the guy was coming. Yep, it was Phillip's mistake and it was not an impossible play. It was a normal assignment that he knew and was easy to see, he just blew it.

I think it was just a $hit play call and Mafah should've already been out of the game for Shipley. Coaches made a mistake on that ordeal and not slowing it down to make sure we got everything right on the most crucial drive of the game. Score anything there and its likely game.
