I-85 between Gaffney/Greenville. Whew!

4

Aug 7, 2023, 7:07 PM

I am going to be making several trips through Gaffney and Greenville has always been a pain in the backside.

To all my upstate folks and other people who may need to travel that way soon; it looks like it's supposed to be completed in early 2024.

I know you all can't wait. I only have to deal with it on occassion and get frustrated by it. A bit of good new, eh?

Good to know it’s improving by the day! 🤣😂

It’s got to be the biggest mess ever by a construction company with the mess in Statesville, NC where I-77 meets I-40 being second!

Not quite as long at I-85, I-26 from the Airport Road Exit to Asheville is going to end up taking forever as well.

Seems like they have been working on it for 10 years. And looks like only a tiny fraction is complete. What is going on there?

If they had finished 8 years ago, shortly after they started, cost would have been 1/2 what's going to eventually be.

You guys are whining about nothing. I95 from Florence to the GA line is a travesty of justice. SC HS failed to fix their biggest problem. 95 is 3-4 lanes in every state but ours. Losing s lot of visitors because they can’t wait to get out!

You are right. Should have been planned and started 25 years ago. It’s ridiculous.

. . . . . worst part is when you get somebody in that left-hand passing lane - who basically set the cruise control on and they end up beside someone else. And, nobody can pass either of them! Backing up traffic unnecessarily.

It's crazy!

on the platform that all interstates would be increased to 3 lanes minimum, they would be given a lot of consideration. Ha!!

I like your thinking but as an over the road driver I'd say 4 lanes or more, minimum. The roads are over burdened and have been for a couple of decades.

Gotta get to 3 first

1

Aug 8, 2023, 9:37 AM [ in reply to Re: I've said for years, if someone wanted to run for president ]

there are areas 3 is all that's needed, 4 would be necessary on I-95 and near any large cities.

Stretches like I-24 from Chattanooga to Nashville, or I-75 from Atlanta to Knoxville, or I-81 all through Va, or 77 from Charlotte through Va, those are prime examples where 3 lanes the whole way would drastically change flow.

I don't know about y'all, but I swear there seems to be more tractor trailers just camping out in the left lane, NOT passing anyone than there used to be 15-20 years ago.

Re: Gotta get to 3 first

Aug 8, 2023, 12:16 PM

Yes, I have noticed that.
At certain places, they actually instruct them to go to that left lane.
I've only speculated why.
But, if anyone knows the purpose of that, it would be good to know.

I speculate they do it maybe when work crews are working on the shoulder or something. But, often, there is no shoulder work going on. So, IDK.

Wait until the I-95 bridge replacement over Lake Marion coming up next year !! You talk about a major cluster.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lake Marion Bridge Project on 95. Sounds like Trouble.

Aug 7, 2023, 9:56 PM

I agree with you.
As far as just bad road; I-95 in my state of South Carolina(God and I love it) is no doubt the worst stretch of the famous or "infamous" interstate.

I am glad; I don't have to travel that way often. I am planning a weekend in Savannah sometime by the end of the year! Probably be good to go this year; it sounds like instead of waiting.

I meant to post something about I-95 after returning from vacation a few weeks ago (Hilton Head/Savannah). This was the first time I had been on 95 in a few years and couldn’t believe how bad it was…to the point of being extremely unsafe. Potholes…globs of asphalt in the emergency lane that would surely cause issues if someone happened to veer over there, etc. It borders on negligent…screw that…it IS negligent.

I-85 from Exit 19 to Commerce GA is awful and extremely dangerous. Two lanes of packed speeding weaving traffic. Trucks running side by side for multiple miles. So many accidents. So many deaths. And exit 19 is a suicide section of road. Three lanes to two and a cloverleaf entrance/exit at the same location. The designing engineer had to be brain dead.

I'm familiar with that section of road as well; as my sister lives in Snellville, GA. You are correct; not the best setup in the world.

What gets me is how the sections on the NC side of Gaffney got finished so much faster. Had to be different contractors.

I drive down 85 to Greer/Greenville all the time. I’m ready for them to complete that project. The worst part is the 18 wheelers in the left lane holding up traffic. If it’s not them it’s the clowns who refuse to drive anywhere but the left lane and there are plenty of those idiots. If you have people passing you in the right lane your A$$ is in the wrong lane if it’s 2 lanes going each way.

"but I'm going the speed limit".....LOL. These left lane campers are a much bigger hazard to traffic (specifically all the traffic BEHIND them) than the guy blowing by doing 85 mph in the left lane.

Just went through there Saturday. We were down to one lane at one point. I do see progress but on a project that size it takes a lot of progress to make any difference.

I thought NC would begin adding another lane each way from the state line to Hwy 74 where it begins 3 lanes when SC started from the state line south. At this point there's no indication NC will be doing anything soon. Traveled to Clemson from north of Charlotte in June and didn't have any trouble either way, but it's not a half way comfortable ride due to all the lane movements in and out of what was once the shoulders. Next time will get off at Blacksburg and take Hwy 29 to just north of S'burg. The stretch I really dislike is between the Catawba River and south of Gastonia.
