It was never Dabo, it was Venables

Oklahoma is on the rise and we are in an absolute nosedive. Venables took the fire with him, now we are sloppy and lack discipline. No one has any passion other than Shipley, and his energy is toxic AF.

Our defense is fine. It's the offense that is the problem.

Im talking about the whole team. Venables chugged a case of Monsters before every game and his energy was contagious. It even spread into the crowd.

The difference is that we don’t have the talent we used to. Oklahoma still does.

We've got more talent than ever by an order of magnitude.

No we don't. No one on this team has the talent of Sammy Watkins, or Mike Williams. No one on this team has the talent of Trevor Lawrence or Travis Etienne.

What’s your point?
How many Nattys were won with Sammy?
How many with Trevor and ETN?

There is plenty of Talent on this team.
Oh yeah Clemson won the Game!

( sorry they did not score 1000 points so you can say woooo and be the man a little more)

Well, I could go on but in these former Clemson stars FAR EXCEED the players we have in those positions today.

There are a lot of comments about coaching but the glaring issue to me is the failure in recruiting. Dabo was two things: a wide receiver coach and a great recruiter. So why is our wide receiver room so poor? It's complicated but I think the coaches Dabo has put in place are inexperienced (and it's not just about calling a play or technique) and cannot get a developing player to excel at the next level. It seems to be the top talent want two things: Money today, and money in the future. Some put more weight on the former than the latter to their detriment. We have the history with an outstanding record with our receiver alumni but it isn't translating to recruiting success. Did Dabo forget how to do it or is he not as involved? Well perhaps but I doubt it. I thing they are looking at their position coach, comparing that person to the person at another school and how they have a history of developing players and they are passing us by.

We have Hamp Greene and a Swinney started the South Carolina game 2 years ago. We do not have the players on offense to compete in top 25

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not a single player

Oct 8, 2023, 7:44 AM

On the team as a whole. From the line to RB to corner and safety. We have like the 6th highest rated team composite wise. When Sammy was here he had Sammy but he a 3/4star QB and a bunch of 2-3 stat linemen, 3-4 star receivers, 2,3,-4 star RB (remember hot rod)? He was the hamp green/ swinney kid that year.

Re: It was never Dabo, it was Venables

Oct 7, 2023, 7:26 PM [ in reply to Re: It was never Dabo, it was Venables ]

Yes but the defense, outside of Deshaun, always provided the vocal leader and heart of the team. Those are the guys that are going to push the players further than the coaches in practice, the film room, the weight room, and when needed on the field. B.V. knew how to identify, develop, and unleash those types of guys, the Wilkins, Boulware, Skalskis of the team. I think that’s one of the biggest things we have missing right now. Right up there with a competent WR, OL, and ST coach…

Re: It was never Dabo, it was Venables

Oct 7, 2023, 9:23 PM

No. We don't have anyone on the team even close to the level of Tee Higgins, or Mike Williams, or Travis Etienne. I don't care what their star ratings are. They don't have the physical abilities of the guys I mentioned.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It was never Dabo, it was Venables

Oct 7, 2023, 9:16 PM

Exactly! I hate when people say it’s recruiting. It is absolutely not recruiting. As you said, based on recruiting and team talent rankings, this is the most talent we have ever had. I personally believe it is coaching, and more specifically position coaching. We have too many unqualified and inexperienced position coaches that are in way above their heads.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It was never Dabo, it was Venables

1

Oct 7, 2023, 9:20 PM [ in reply to Re: It was never Dabo, it was Venables ]

The composite ranking doesn't matter. We don't have anyone on the team with the same skill set as Tee Higgins, or Mike Williams, or Sammy Watkins.

It would be kind of like if you have a basketball team full on 4/5 star small forwards. Even if they are all 4/5 star guys, you are still going to have problems because you don't have that top notch ballhandler or 6'10" rebounder.

Or, Oklahoma has oil money and no aversion to the portal. We are behind the curve due to our refusal to use the portal, but the truth is we don't have the money or "advertiser backing" or whatever you want to call NIL$$ to pay skill-position players 7 figures per year. That is what it will take to get back to the top of the heap.

Re: It had always been Dabo

Oct 7, 2023, 8:49 PM

The best thing Dabo ever did was hire BV. That’s when he started winning and the day BV left we started losing. No one can argue whether or not this is true, it simply is a fact. Can Dabo hire another BV? Is GR going to be hamstrung on offense or will Dabo let him go? Will we continue to promote from within or allow outside ideas in? We shall see but the past is an indisputable metric!

You are correct his best hire was BV and yes it was his hire. That is the credit he deserves.

All things change over time. For what he has fine he deserves the opportunity to make the changes to bring us back.

He built the 2 championships we won under his leadership. Without him there would never have be a BV to help us reach the top of the mountain.

I’m looking forward to the next chapter. How we do is up for debate but he deserves our support and the opportunity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It had always been Dabo

Oct 7, 2023, 9:28 PM

He should t have to bring us back, rather it should be to keep us there. I do believe Dabo thinks or thought the guys he was working with could do that but we all see it didn’t work. The question is does he? The GR hire was exciting last year but I’m afraid the Dabo ego is too big now to allow a BV to come in and do things his way. Time will tell but I’m afraid we will watch this thing implode and it may be decades to never before we get it back. I say never because we happen to be in a dead end alliance with a football conference that isn’t well respected and the game has changed. Thank god we were alive to see the good ol days

Memories on this bored are so short term. In Venables’ last year here we went 10-3 having to win the Cheezit Bowl to get to 10 wins. We finished the year at 14/16 in the two main polls. Who knows where we’ll finish this year. We didn’t win the ACC that year either, with Venables as DC.

Venables was great but some of y’all put him on a pedestal now that he’s gone while kicking Dabo when he’s still here and a tiger……

It's likely the opener took any metaphorical energy reserve and no quit attitude we've come to expect. I don't fault the coaches, no amount of motivational 'cross of gold' speeches can enable a player to 'suspend belief' and run on pure adrenaline for 10 games. I do blame them for the self inflicted wounds & handicaps and a tired perspective regarding such accurately described(byme) as unyielding stubbornness, borne of spite; all of which effectuated the unlikely but eventual outcome of the opener-
