Unpopular opinion: Michigan sign stealing not a big deal.

Don't get me wrong i am not saying they should not face punishment or penalty, but in the modern day i think it is more stupid than anything that a spy is going around old school style dressed in disguise.

How much information do you think he was really able to get... if any... that you couldn't get from watching film of the other team, the tv is only making a big deal out of it for content, content is there bread and butter, i have no love for michigan and once again i'm not saying they shouldn't be punished.
But i honestly doubt if any of the scouting made much of a difference in any game, also apparently 3 or 4 other school were passing around info also. The "unprecedented" term being thrown around is so stupid, sorry it doesn't hold a candle to 100 other cases i've heard in modern day including unc basketball fake classes for 20 years.

Tampering with other teams top recruits and players, illegally paying top players has a huge impact not some peddly little list of offensive plays that would go for 3 yards even if you didn't know the "signs".

What if UM shared Clemson and Tenn signals with the Coots? Is that not a big deal? Each was a huge loss to Clemson and Tennessee, possibly knocking them out of a playoff appearance. As bad as we played a play or two could have made the difference.

Clemson lost that game because we refused to run the ball which we had been doing quite successfully all game. Further I can tell you what play we were going to run next all last year because we only had about 5 of them to steal.

In person scouting is like a spoiler on a 91 Honda Civic. Looks terrible and has little impact on performance.

Venables was often accused of stealing signs as have many others as sign stealing is as old as the game.

The only reason in person scouting was banned was cost savings as it adds little vs the film which is shared between teams

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was not aware that the film shared between teams...

1

Nov 8, 2023, 6:41 AM

... showed that.

Team A and Team B exchange films. Team A gives Team B film that shows the sideline of Team A on every play and focuses in on the signs they use. So, Team B can study the film and deduce. "Everytime they make this signal, they call this play."

I think the poster is saying Michigan told South Carolina what our signs

CLEARLY, Michigan sent South Carolina our sign for,"Get ready, we're

That's not what he's saying. Use your brain. He's giving a hypothetical that is closer to home to illustrate that it is a big deal.

Do a little research, you are severely uninformed regarding this topic and the information that currently informs your perspective is misinformation–

If they could get even close to the same evidence....

7

Nov 8, 2023, 6:37 AM

.... from watching public domain tapes (TV, etc.) then why would they bother to spend thousands of dollars to employ the method they did? Why would they risk breaking NCAA rules?

It is the same thing the coots said after Clemson finally got to host the state

football championships ONE year. The coots had held them EVERY year in Willie B. Anyway, Clemson fans said it wasn't fair for the COOTS to host them every year as it was a recruiting advantage. The COOTS said it NEVER helped them.....I said,"The fact that you didn't capitalize on having it in Willie Brice every year in NOT AN INDICATION THAT IT WAS NOT AN ADVANTAGE...". Michigan would not have cheated if they did not think it was an advantage.

Now, THE HEELS cheating is an entirely other matter. They obtained a huge advantage.HUUUUUGE. And got of SCOTT, Not Charlie Scott, but SCOTT free. Made me sick after they said they had to uphold the INTEGRITY of the ACC when Clemson got busted in the 80's....I will never pull for UNC.

your common sense takes over. If it was of no value, it wouldn't be illegal. certainly, it was of great value. Try watching tv and picking up signals. again common sense.

Lmfao this is the problem in the world and why nobody is ever held accountable anymore.

I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

2

It's not just a matter of sign stealing which, by the way, is impermissible per NCAA rules, Michigan also scouted future opponents which is also a major NCAA rules violation, and anyone who doesn't think that gave Michigan an unfair competitive advantage is lying to themselves. Just look at Michigan's record prior to the sign stealing and scouting. It's no coincidence that their record improved after they started cheating.

This is their second offense. Harbaugh was suspended at the first of the season for another illegal matter. That have a history of cheating. Yet, very little will be done to them. The NCAA will wrist slap them which is about all they do now.

signs are a crutch. Michigan exposed teams that can't survive without crutches***

As in every facet of life and sport, if it isn't important, why do it? If it gives you no advantage, why do it? If it makes no difference, why do it?

Majority are that stupid they don’t understand how Michigan was cheating so they assume it isn’t a big deal.

I can tell you about sn in game signal stealing impact. No names to protect the innocent or guilty.

An unranked, small town IL high school was playing the state top ranked school in their division and was getting gashed and then the code for run or pass was broken.

After that, a rub to the head area or cap told the defense it was a pass and hands to the knees or scratching the legs told them it was a run. The top ranked team's offense was immediately shut down. Just something that simple makes a difference. Imagine knowing the exact play?

As the NCAA states "advanced" scouting is against the rules, not during the game.

Just like steroids in MLB...If it wasn't paying off he wouldn't have been doing it. Who wastes thousands of dollars on tickets if it doesn't deliver? The TV copy and film teams use to scout rarely show the signals from the sidelines. Filming them is the violation. There is no rule against reading their signs in game but you can't film them in other's games. I can't think of another reason to have Stalions on the sideline whispering in the DC's ear unless he had something to offer.
The NCAA, CFP and B1G will screw over every team in an effort to earn money. I wish one team, Purdue, Indiana, Iowa just one team would say we won't play until Michigan is held accountable. If ESPN has to air the 1972 Gator Bowl instead of a 2023 B1G game, people will be forced to act. Every one of these incidents ignored by the NCAA weakens the NCAA
