If a player gets NIL money should they get a scholarship ?

I think they should pay their own way . Since they have chosen to make their services a business they should pay their own way. They can write off their tuition and expenses on their taxes. Give their scholarship to a deserving teammate who needs it.

I am with you on that. They could be a walk-on and free up a scholarship for someone.

They should get their scholarship and the money. Moreover, a school that wouldnt give the scholarship wouldn't be able to compete.

The players shouldn't get money. If you want to say the schools and coaches shouldn't get money either, I'm fine with that.

What if NIL is less than scholarship in terms of value? You need to remember that the majority of NIL deals are not 6 or 7 figures.

Agree! Make it optional. You want to become an employee or remain a student? Most will take the money forgo an education and one figures by 30 not have anything to show for their decisions. Of course some will make more in the NFL but a good number of them will never make it that far.

How would that school compete? Some schools would give the scholarship as well.

NIL, scholarships etc. are on the brink of being irrelevant. Once the court cases clear, athletes are going to be employees of the university or part of a new entity that falls under the same antitrust exemptions as the NFL, NBA and MLB. A whole new set of rules will come into existence that will render scholarship athletes null and void for the top tier athletic institutions. Maybe it's the farm system model some have floated but I don't think that is going to work b/c there will be more than 32 "schools" that will choose to participate.
Maybe I'm a doomsday person on it but the fabric we have known as college athletics is about to be torn to shreds. I will always lay this at the feet of the NCAA. They were so black and white about athletes being compensated that it forced the athletes to take drastic measures. All they originally wanted were some scraps. Scraps that meant nothing to the NCAA and wasn't taking any money out of NCAA pockets, autographs, jersey sales etc. It could have worked had the NCAA budged half an inch but they didn't and here we are.

Until they actually lay down some rules for NIL, nothing can or will change. Right now it is simply a free for all. Some players are getting their cake and eating it too. My kids did not qualify for most grants or scholarships because I made too much money. Funny how athletics has no rules about this, but being smart limits your options. Crazy mixed up world we live in.

They should get both just like the athletes. Saying that in jest, but you get the idea.

Yes, they should.
Their athletic achievements earned them the scholarship.
Also, the overwhelming majority of kids aren't getting NIL deals that could cover housing, books, and food.
Out-of-state kids are the majority of the roster and its about 100k a year all said and done to attend Clemson as an out of state kid.
Congrats on contributing to the board but you didn't think this thought all the way through.

Would your employer penalize you if you got a second job? Or made money on Instagram? I know they are not technically employees but they have to attend class right? The scholarship has. Nothing to do with NIL. NIL is just simply being paid for your name to be used in advertising. Trust me I get these boosters paying these nil’s are getting next to 0 benefit from these 18 year olds and it’s only so their team can win but you can’t have a rule or law that. NCAA is being sued yet again. They actually need to make the scholarships 4 year contracts with non competes if you want to stop all this.

Actually yes. Any employment outside of my company must be approved by my company leadership. That’s not that uncommon. But I agree with the rest of what you are saying.

You are wrong. Athletes are students and the overwhelming majority of athletes will not get any NIL money or enough money to pay the bills. The misguided idea that athletes are rolling in cash is just sad.

"College" football, at the Power Five Level, at least is on it's death bed. If you like professional football and aren't bothered by the players having no connection whatsoever to the University (probably forget which one they are playing for some of them time) then the new version of college football might appeal to you. If it turns you off, FCS football may be an option. For a while.
