158 - Justyn Ross Registered 158 Receptions for Clemson

We all remember WR Justyn Ross (2018-2021) bursting onto the scene as a true freshman in 2018. After his amazing performances in the 2018 playoffs, including a spectacular 2018-2019 title game, Ross appeared to be heading straight for the NFL First Round.

Before Clemson:

Justyn Ross was a highly rated recruit from Phenix City, Alabama who spurned the home state Crimson Tide. According to Tigernet, Ross took his official visit to Clemson as a recruit during Clemson’s Military Appreciation Day game against the Citadel in 2017. It was special for him because his mother, Charay Franklin “served overseas in the United States National Guard and joined Ross in much of his recruitment via telephone while being deployed.”

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/justyn-ross-to-dedicate-military-appreciation-game-to-his-mother-17435

According to SBNation.com, Bama came after the state’s #1 recruit before losing him to Clemson:

“In 2018, the Tide took a shocking recruiting L by the name of Justyn Ross.

Ross was the No. 1 player in the state and the No. 7 receiver in the class, per the Composite, though many of us who’d watched the class’ highest-ranked receivers thought Ross was closer to No. 2 or 3 in the country.

He picked Clemson over the Tide, and not because Bama didn’t want him. The Tide offered him a scholarship out of Central in Phenix City, in the Eastern part of the state right near the border with Georgia. Nick Saban explained not getting Ross before Monday’s National Championship, which included Ross lighting up his team:

“We thought he was one of the best players in Alabama a year ago and certainly recruited him with as much enthusiasm as possible. We just came up short.”

Ross, for his part, said he liked Clemson for “the different type of culture that they have there, as well as being “more a family and more coaching stability.”

https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2019/1/7/18173293/justyn-ross-clemson-alabama

The Greenville News added one other interesting detail on Ross signing with Clemson:

“Ross was the first No. 1-ranked recruit in Alabama to sign with Clemson and only the second not to sign with the Crimson Tide in a dozen years.”

https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sports/2021/08/30/clemson-wide-receiver-justyn-ross-things-know/5599295001/

At Clemson:

Justyn Ross wowed at Clemson from his freshman year forward. His two games during the 2018-2019 CFP announced to anyone who had not already been paying attention that he was a collegiate superstar on his way to being an NFL star.

As we know, however, Ross’ path was interrupted before the 2020 season. A congenital fusion condition of his neck and spine was discovered. The condition would require surgery. Ross missed the 2020 season as he recovered. He then returned for the 2021 season.

According to his bio on ClemsonTigers.com:

“Missed the 2020 season but finished his Clemson career spanning 2018-21 having recorded 158 passes for 2,379 yards with 20 touchdowns in 1,400 snaps over 39 career games (24 starts) … concluded his time at Clemson ranked tied for fifth in Clemson history in career receiving touchdowns, 10th in career receiving yards and 11th in career receptions … caught a pass in 37 straight games, tied for the third-longest streak in Clemson history as of the end of the 2021 season … posted a dazzling true freshman season in 2018 in which he caught 46 passes for a team-leading 1,000 yards with nine touchdowns in 15 games … announced his presence on the game’s biggest stages as a freshman, catching six passes for 148 yards with two touchdowns in the Cotton Bowl and six passes for 153 yards with one touchdown in the College Football Playoff National Championship.”

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/justyn-ross/

According to Sports-Reference.com, Ross registered the following stats at Clemson:

2018:
- 46 Receptions for 1000 Yards (21.7 Average)
- 9 Touchdowns

2019:
- 66 Receptions for 865 yards (13.1 Average)
- 8 Touchdowns

2020:
Red Shirt (Recovered from Surgery)

2021:
- 46 Receptions for 514 Yards (11.2 average)
- 3 Touchdowns

Total (2018-2021):
- 158 Receptions for 2,379 Yards (15.1 Average)
- 20 Touchdowns

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/justyn-ross-1.html

Bottom line: Justyn Ross was electric at Clemson!

After Clemson:

After Clemson, Ross signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. He spent the 2022 season recovering from surgery after a foot injury. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, in his 2023 season with the Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs he registered 6 receptions for 53 yards (8.8 average).

He now has a Super Bowl ring to accompany his College National Championship ring.

Clemson Highlights:

If you are like me, the first play that comes to mind when you hear Ross’ name is his incredible one-handed grab in the 2018-2019 Title Game against Bama. But Ross’ play in both of Clemson’s CFP games that season was nothing short of spectacular!

I drove through Phenix City, AL a few weeks ago. Thought about Justyn Ross & the impact that he had for the Tigers.

I am also lucky to have a ball signed by Justyn!

Great receiver... it's a shame he had that spine issue. He could have been an all time great.

Virginia State Route 158, known as Front Street, is a 2.52 mile state highway that runs from the east end at US 58 Alt in Coeburn to the west end at US 58 near Coeburn in the southwestern corner of the state in Wise County (must be where InspectorM is from <img border=">).

Clemson baseball's Tuesday opponent, Coastal Carolina, is a public university in Conway, SC, about 15 miles from Myrtle Beach. It was founded in 1954 as Coastal Carolina Junior College, then became USC Coastal Carolina in 1960, then became independent in 1993 as Coastal Carolina University. The school became a 4-year college in 1974. Coastal has over 10,000 students on a 630 acre campus in colleges of business, education and social sciences, humanities and fine arts, and science. The athletic teams, the Chanticleers, compete in NCAA Division I in the Sunbelt Conference. The baseball team won the national title at the College World Series in 2016. Notable alumni include Dustin Johnson, Josh Norman, Edwin McCain, wrestler Diamond Dallas Page, and Madelyn Cline of Netflix's Outer Banks.

BigAl31, this is the nice, rural part of the state. It's nearly as far away from me as Tennessee, the state to which I plan to relocate one day.
