Fumbles, FGs, and Fools

8

Sep 23, 2023, 9:35 PM

If anyone watched that game today or even analyzed the statistics after the fact and came away that Clemson is not a good team is the 3rd on the list. The turnovers and fgs are what is keeping them from being great vs just good. We’d be undefeated without those issues. We still have the issues and why we’re 2-2 but getting better each week. Additionally, our defense is playing good ball and the statistics will continue to show that (see rushing defense in particular) and the offense is starting to gel. Losing sucks and I’m expecting to not experience it again this year based on what I watched today and the growth I suspect will continue. We’ll see and I’ll be there doing my part.

Well, I mean part of being a good team is not making those mistakes.

Yep. Good teams may do this kind of stuff once in a while. The Tigers do it almost every game. And they have been making these boneheaded mistakes for over two years. Remember DJ?

I stated as much. Do think we’re done with it though and we’d have beaten a lower ranked team today even with the errors.

Sometimes they are. We’ll see at seasons end if you’re right. I’m ok being wrong, though I won’t like the outcome. You seem to want to be right and wishing for a bad season.

I've been wishing Dabo to turn this crap around for the last 2 seasons.

I don't care if I'm right or wrong.........I just call it like I see it without wearing Orange Glasses that tend to blur fans' vision about who or what our team REALLY is.

The season is already a failure. 3 of the 5 goals for the year are off the table. That’s a failure and dabo sets those goals.

I liken this team to the 2014 team. Lost the opener, lost a close one to a highly ranked FSU. Ended up losing one more to GT in the regular season but won the bowl game big and you could see the team slowly building into what would become a team playing in the national championship the next year.

Just keep improving. Next year we should have a veteran Klubnik and veteran WR corps. Probably still have Mafah too. Plus the playoff is expended next year. I just look at this season as a rebuild to greatness. Hopefully our recruits see it too

going strictly by the metrics is a crutch for coaches

2

Sep 23, 2023, 10:10 PM

The flaw in being a metrics person is that the scoreboard plays no part in your decisions. It's an easy excuse for the coach to say "the odds were in our favor to do this over this". That's the biggest problem. If you actually watched Clemson this year, which I assumed Dabo has, you wouldn't play for field goals. For the life of me, I don't understand why you run Shipley on 3rd and 11 in the 4th quarter, but don't run him on 4th and 1 in OT. THAT is terrible coaching and there's no good reasoning behind it other than you're a metrics guy following what the book tells you instead of being a coach that's in the moment and knows the ebbs and flows of the game.

The scoreboard is for sure the ultimate measuring stick but the metrics tell you “how” the team is playing and not the binary result. The metrics also show that we fumbled twice and lost one for a td and missed a fg which then lead to the scoreboard. I do agree the coaching has become tentative for some reason.
