People actually blaming the defense and Goodwin?

Y’all are doing a bit right? A joke of some type?

Cause I can’t imagine anyone who just watched that game and in all seriousness deciding that was the issue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You should be R.I.P. Wes clueless on

Pressure blitzes and packages.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Defense did NOT lose this game.

2

Sep 23, 2023, 6:41 PM

A fumble 6 and a missed FG form a walk on (totally on Dabo) are why we lost. Not defense.

Agree, BUT kicker and a fumble scoop and score didn't allow receivers running free in first half. Fumble was a miss by Mafah. He was supposed to stay in and block.

People are generally dumb.***

Offense played well just couldn’t get points in second half not gonna win many games with 7 pts in a half

Yep. We held them to 17 offensive points

Against the widely lauded best WR core in the nation and a Heisman QB.

Anything less than a shutout is considered failing for this board.

That said, Wes definitely had some situations today where he deserved the critique. I ain't saying it's time to fire the dude but folks really need to drop the BV comparison. BV had games where there were shootouts and I definitely wish we had the same comfort with Wes that was developed with BV.

Personally, I don't argue too much with the fringe. It'll be obvious by the end of the year if a change is coming or not. No amount of message board ranting is gonna do anyone any good other than raise some blood pressure and encourage downvotes by folks not hearing or reading what they wanna hear.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He messed up before the half yes

Sep 23, 2023, 5:15 PM

But the defense showed up plenty other times in the game. After we missed the field goal I thought it was a sure thing they were easily going to go down and get in field goal range.

But the D stood up and forced several incompletions to send it to OT.

Wes did a good enough job until the pressure was on. Our LBs may have all the potential, but they don't blitz, they get stuck on blocks, and they miss on screens. At the end of the game, they should have been blitzing the crap outta the QB. He should have been so uncomfortable that he was having nightmares. On the last drive, they stood at the LOS and just watched. Not good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t think he was horrible today. But I maintain that you don’t replace probably the best dc in the nation with a guy who’s never called plays. It’s like Dabo was playing money ball with the staff after BV and TE left

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ah so its not about results or what hes actually

done. It’s just a bunch of people who didn’t like the hire and would rather be right than actually look at what’s happening.

No kidding. We gave up, what, less than 30 yards on the ground and people are blaming our defense. Travis and his receivers are as good as we will see this and maybe as good as we have seen since the LSU Playoff game.

That 7 point blunder and we win the game. He also cost us a crucial timeout. The D played well, but he is in over his head.

Get a clue, we gave up 17 points on defense

What the heck do you want against a top 5 team?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: People actually blaming the defense and Goodwin?

Sep 23, 2023, 5:38 PM

I would agree. The defense played great and battled. Did you think we would pitch a shutout against a good FSU offense?

Defense did their job to win.

Offense did enough to win too, but the in game coaching and end of game calls whether it be a trick play or giving the QB the RPO was really bad. Why you do not line up and sneak it 2 times or run it right up the gut 2 times is beyond me. And the use of time outs was just awful. At least leave yourself one.

Wes and the defense did more than enough to win. Would I like to see turnovers? Sure. But they brought pressure, they blanketed these allegedly awesome receivers down field. Outside of their first touchdown (which was great play design) FSU got nothing easy.

Bottom line if you give up 17 points in regulation you should win the #### game. Wes and the defense aren’t the problem.

You mean More than enough to win not counting giving up that touchdown in 1 play in overtime

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, I mean what I said.

Sep 23, 2023, 7:46 PM

A good receiver winning a jump ball against a backup cornerback (who had excellent coverage) is not the indictment of the defense you seem to think it is.

The defense gave up two touchdown drives and a FG drive in regulation. The fact that the offense can't score 18 points without spotting the opposing team a touchdown isn't Wes Goodwin's problem.

Sep 23, 2023, 6:41 PM

We held FSU to 17 offensive points in 4 quarters.

We made some good adjustments at the half too. We contained a really good QB and bowed up when it counted at the end of regulation.

The guy is a good coach and we have a good defense.

Not THE sole issue, but Goodwin needs to allow corners to be aggressive. D generally played really well. A few break downs but Fl. St. drove right down the field basically uncontested with wide open receivers for at least two series - both scores by Fl. St. The 2nd half was much better but Goodwin still comes out way to often in soft zone. Makes no sense. Better get over it or Maye and Hartman will pick us apart.
