Frank Howard vs Dabo. Just to let you know, Im a fan

of both. The question I have, and it’s just out of curiosity only, is how many games did it take for each of the to get 165 wins.

I saw FH at ~58% and Dabo ~79% win rate***

Back when Frank Howard was coaching they weren’t playing a 12 game schedule. Most of the time it was 10 and earlier it was less. Not taking anything away from CDS and real happy for his achievements and hopefully he just keeps on piling on the wins and championships.

19 years for Frank Howard. 1940-1969.But they were playing on average 9 games per year, once in a while 10 or 11.

Frank Howard - 165-118-12
Dabo - 166-43

Per information I got from a Tim Bourret article written in 2021.

Frank Howard played 62% of his games on the road. The coots didn't come to Clemson until 1960. We played GT 14 years in a row in Atlanta.

As of the writing of the article (linked below) Coach Howard had 72 road wins vs Dabo's 41. (not sure what that number is today.

Thanks for the post. I had forgotten some of those facts. Lot harder to win on the road. Regardless, Swinney is the best we have had (hard to compare to Heisman given his short tenure).

I would propose its WAY harder to win on the road now

with bigger stadiums and attention than it was in the 50-60s

Why is it everyone is just fine with Dabo achieving Howard's win total, but when he makes a slight move in the direction of Howard's loss total, we get all spun up?

I am a '67 grad and we are talking about two totally different eras (circumstances, conditions and restrictions). Frank Howard is and always will be the FATHER of Clemson football. Dabo and Danny are both unique and special and they would both tell you the same about coach Howard. It's apples and oranges. You have to look at the contributions of all involved and what it meant at the time with consideration to what they were dealing with as coaches. Also Charlie Pell and Red Parker had positive impacts on CU football. We have a good tradition and it was built over the years on the foundation laid by the late and great Frank Howard.

Here’s a stat: Frank Howard had 10 losing seasons. Dabo has had 1.

That stat means nothing. Howard as a member of the ACC played Southeastern conf. teams for financial reasons. Unlike the ACC, the SEC had NO scholarship limitations and NO minimum SAT score for admittance- 2 huge advantages. This went on for years beginning in the 60's- maybe even earlier. Howard did quite well considering the circumstances. His teams always played hard and were tough as nails. I could give you numerous examples but at the risk of boring you- just take my word for it.

Thankfully, Dabo has been able to sell recruits on our national

championship history and outstanding support for football at Clemson, luxuries Frank Howard didn't have.

He's done an outstanding job.
