Giant floating petri dishes engineered to extract as many dollars from as many wallets in as few days as is humanly possible.

Is that about right? It feels right. But change my cynical mind.

Have you been on one?

I held the same opinion until I went on one. It was amazing. I probably ate enough food to cover the cost of the fare. And don't get me started on the drink package which was only like 75 bucks. It was well worth it. The wife and I had a balcony room and the onboard activities were great too. Free comedy shows and other things. My wife took a "learn the MJ thriller dance class and I sat and watched. We had a blast.

My bride gets seasick on dry land and is a hard sell.
I try to tell her it'd have to be a mighty (and sudden) storm to make a ship that big buck to the point of sickness. But she's pretty hard to move off-center on that topic.

Her folks are on a small ship (Seabourn) somewhere down around Tierra Del Fuego right now. They're doing a 30-day trip around the British isles in the summer. They do those small ships because they like those longer tours and feel it's a better value overall.

They sailed on one of those Windstars around the Caribbean a few years back and said that was about as much fun as you can have on a boat.

It's all Greek to me, though. Maybe we'll just stick to tooling around to the various ports of call found on Lake Hartwell.

Take an Alaskan cruise on a Holland America ship and you will change your mind. 50 years ago, I asked a travel agent if he could choose one cruise to take in his life, what would it be. He didn't hesitate in saying an Alaskan cruise. My wife and I took the cruise and it is our favorite. We have taken 3 Alaskan cruises plus others, but the Alaskan one is still our favorite.

Then we did a Mediterranean cruise about 8 years ago on Norwegian and I was even better, as for as amenities on the ship! Hard to top the scenery on the Alaskan cruise though, and we went the last week of May and the weather was perfect...about 72 degrees every day! But the scenery along the Mediterranean Amalfi coast is amazing too, along with touring Rome, Florence, Pompeii and Barcelona.

I've never had a problem with sea sickness, even though my 1st cruise was a Caribbean right behind a major hurricane the went up the Florida gulf coast and closed the Tampa port, and we were bussed to Canaveral to board the ship. Pretty rocky but never got seasick, though I'm sure some did!

A lot depends on which cruise line you choose. What if you decided to vacation at the beach for the first time. Your experience would be vastly different based on Myrtle vs Outer Banks vs South Beach vs Hilton Head vs Folly Beach.

Once in a while a ship experiences rough seas or a sanitary system failure or a virus which spreads throughout the ship. These are the exception but by all accounts are awful when it happens as there is no where to run from it.

I've been through the Panama Canal, to Alaska, the West Coast of Mexico, about everywhere except Cuba in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean including Italy, Egypt, Israel and Greece on a Cruise Ship and had fun on all of them with one exception. The tropical storm that hit Bermuda caused us to leave a few hours early and the water was rough. You know it's going to be bad when the crew is placing "barf bags" all over the ship.

One other time an elderly gentleman died of a heart attack onboard and we had to make an unscheduled stop near Key West so they could get his body off the ship. I guess I was lucky because I never got a bug or any illness, other than a few hangovers. I even carried cans of blackeyed peas and collards on a New Years cruise and they heated them up for me on New Years day.

A couple reasons actually...

1. You do not need a passport to visit foreign countries on a cruise.
2. You can see multiple ports in a short week.
3. The cost of travel is relatively inexpensive when compared to air fare to multiple port of calls.

In one cruise I got to see 4 different Caribbean islands in 7 days all the while my lodging and meals were free along with 10 free drinks per day which equated to almost 20 a day since the wife didn't drink much. I think that trip in total for me and wife including multiple land excursions and souvenirs was less than $5k. Air fare alone to all those places would have been that much

If you want to try it, I would suggest an Alaskan cruise. I have no desire to go on a cruise in the Caribbean or any other open water cruise. I tend to be susceptible to motion sickness. Not to the point of throwing up but just not feeling good and I don’t really want to do that for 5-7-10 days. So we did the Alaska cruise and there was really only one day on open water. The rest of the time you are within sight of land and many times in an inland passage. The scenery and off-ship excursions were excellent. And you still get all the food and drink options like with an ocean cruise. I would do it again, but my cousin moved to Alaska and now we can just go visit her at a much more reasonable cost. We also did the train tour across Alaska and that was great too without the water related issues.

So being sick/a little green and trapped on a huge ship sounds like a special sort of salty hell.

Someone suggested Dollywood. It seems a little kitschy but maybe we'll give it a shot.

It is nothing like off shore fishing. Miles apart. I thought the same thing too before my first cruise. Then when we got on at port we went straight to the pool and food options as we hadn't had lunch yet and took our food back to our room. When we got back to the room, halfway through the meal I noticed we had been under way for about 20mins and was halfway out the harbor. I didn't feel a thing.

I have been violently seasick going offshore fishing too. From what I saw on the Alaska cruise I don’t think I would get that sick on the larger cruise ship, but I guess it is possible. Tia was one of the reasons we opted for the Alaska cruise that stays in calm water and in bays and inlets a lot.

I prefer to book my own land based vacations but, sometimes a cruise makes sense. Summer of 2023, I did a Holland America Baltic cruise. This year late summer I am doing the same ship to visit Norway. I have not booked it but am eyeballing an end of year Viking River cruise for Christmas markets.

I am active and love to hike. There are some locations that I would not consider a cruise because of time constraints with having to get back on board at a certain time. You need to look at the cruise itinerary, costs, and decide if it is right for you.

I spent twenty years in the canoe club myself. Been on various cruises, WestPacs, Med Cruises, Gulf Cruises, World Cruises….

The wife wants us to do a cruise as her sister and BIL have done several and talk about them a lot. They seem to really like the party atmosphere. My wife isn’t the party type at all and I’ve been three sheets to the wind in every little corner of the world already.

….I know what it is she’s after. She wants that quiet, scenic view of water and horizon 360 degrees around. She wants to see the moon glowing over the water and the night sky packed with stars. But that’s not going to happen on a cruise liner. There’s just too much light coming from the platform you’re on. It’s a freakin’ circus going on.

On warships we see you pass in the night. You’re lit up like a Hollywood movie set. You likely never saw us because we went to “darken ship” at sunset. That’s our standard operating procedure. We make efforts to be incognito from sundown to sunrise. Even the interior lights are filtered red.

I can remember doing a long weapons exercise down in the Caribbean op area during the late summer of ‘95. We were down there about 5 weeks or so and we’d take port call breaks here and there.

We were in Saint John’s, Antigua, I think. It’s like 10:30 in the morning and about four or five of us are sitting at an open air tiki bar drinking beer for brunch when a cruise ship moors a few hundred yards away. Next comes a massive wave of tourist hustling past us trying to get to the main drag and all the tourist shops.

Two and a half hours later we’re still at the bar when the herd of tourist comes hustling past us again, this time carrying all the booty the scored “duty free” ( wink, wink ).

All we could think was what these people were missing. If they stayed the night they could have seen Christian Slater ( the actor ) up the hill at a nightclub, drunk as he!! dancing all by himself with his t-shirt pulled back up over his head.

We have been on cruises and are not a fan. You get to a port of call around 8am. Unload like a herd of cattle. Go on excursions then load boat and depart by 6pm. It leaves you very little time to explore new countries. Food was great but that was the only thing good about cruises. We like to be with and see the behind scenes of countries not the Americanized version. We now fly to our destination and stay there for extended time period.

Just my two cents.

I have been on over 30 cruises. Arguments against are valid and it IS NOT my favorite choice for vacation. However, I vacation often and look for bargains and cruises often are especially if you throw a few bucks around in the casino and set loss limits. Cruise casinos will offer free future cruises on far less gambling activity than you might think. Many people only take cruise vacations or cruise on only one cruise line. I have no brand loyalty and will cruise on which ever one has the best deal. As some have already stated you can visit places that are very expensive to fly to and stay or identify where you would like to stay in the future.

They aren't for everyone but if you book on a higher end cruise line, not MSC or Carnival for example, you have a decent change of avoiding the petri dish feeling, although they definitely aren't the place for a germophobe. You actually do get a lot of value for your money compared to flying to an island somewhere and paying for everything a la cart. But ymmv depending on the cruise line, ship and itinerary. Those variables will make or break your experience so do your research to end up in the right situation.

Been on many cruises. Majesty cruise line, norweigen, royal Caribbean several times, emerald seas, carnival twice (ugh), and celebrity being the latest. I like celebrity the best. Cruises are a helluva deal for everything you get, to be honest.
Going to alask next in the spring.

It also depends on where you cruise from and how much it costs. The Carnaval cruise out of Charleston should be kept a far distance away. People are dressed up like white trash (even blacks dress like white trash). You need to do some serious recon if you want to depart from Charleston.
Another thing, the more expensive the cruise cost the passengers are also a higher class. I don't want Rap music or a MAGA rally during my cruise.

I have been on a half-dozen or so cruises now with a few different lines, all to the Caribbean and Mexico.

Carnival is inexpensive and usually hosts the rowdier crowd. Drinks flow freely and there is a party atmosphere most of the time. I found the cleanliness and amenities lacking. They travel quickly to their destinations, sometimes to the detriment of passengers with motion issues.

Royal Caribbean is more adult oriented and the food is much better, but you will still be dealing with a good number of kids. There are sections for just the adults and have been well policed from what I've experienced.

Disney has by far the best customer service and program area for the kids in terms of activities. You pay more for the "Disney" of the trip, but it has been our favorite line with my 4-10 year old. Disney specifically travels with their stabilizers out the whole time which greatly helps with rocking.

A few others like Virgin offer a much quieter trip aimed at only adults or a much older crowd, if that's what you're looking for.

I rarely do the excursions, but then again I'm pretty comfortable grabbing a cab and going somewhere I want to see. With a kid in tow, I've stayed much closer to tourist areas.

All in all, I enjoy cruises. You get to wake up in a new country or city, sleep in a bed that practically rocks you to sleep, try foods that you don't normally try, see performances that cover a very wide range... it's a good experience. With motion sickness issues, the closer to the middle of the ship (vertically and horizontally) is usually the best. Balcony views are a bit overrated for the cost, but I do enjoy access to the sea air and late at night it can be quite beautiful.

Yes, you can get sick. It's a floating hotel with a lot of contact, but if you wash your hands pretty regularly, I don't think it's nearly as bad as most non-cruisers think.
