So much for patience, development, and commitment.
I guess the key now, more than ever - though it was always key - is to recruit kids to the program and the university. To the "culture" - as DS likes to say. But it seems many are "committing" to PLAY, not to be a contributing member of the team "Rico's time is now!" Even though it's a silly line from a commercial, it's pretty accurate. It's about "me" and "now" more than it ever has been. Coaches are going to have to get more creative with how they sell a school, more honest, and more long term, and hope the recruits can grasp that in this "gotta have it now" age (and we're all guilty of that - just think back on how often you were on Tigernet and other sites when the coaching carousel was going 90mph - it's not exclusive to any one generation).

I didn't take the time to read the article, but wouldn't that leave 53.9% 3rd year, grad or red shirt? That's close to a 50/50 split which is what would be expected.

I would have expected more upperclassmen who have waited for their turn and, for whatever reason, not gotten it (like TP), or had it and then lost it (like Kelly Bryant). Or guys who knew they weren't going to start at that school, like Chase Brice. I can get those transfers, but the number of first & 2nd year guys surprised me.

Actually, I am on the other side, the 1-2 year guys make more sense. Guys that were promised things, guys that have harder competition either in-front or immediately behind them. Maybe they signed up at a "lesser school" and are trying to upgrade. Had to do some academic things. Guys that really needed to go to either a different position or school for time. Just folks that can read the landscape.

I'm inclined to agree with you on that one. Just like recruiting, good bit of work to vet, and you haven't got a year or two to watch and build a relationship. Which is a bit of a gamble.

I think there may very well have been a me culture out there for decades but the old rules limited mobility. What Dabo is really fighting against is looking through that culture and finding those that truly understand the team aspect of this sport. So many of the top athletes are the kings of the local high schools, not only on the field but socially. Combine that with hormones and lack of knowledge that those that age simply cannot have yet, its a wonder so many good teams can be put together across the league.
