Clemson and the portal.

Disclaimer: I support Dabo's philosophy and use of the portal as he has used it up to this point in time.

But, can we all agree that each school is different and there is no "one size fits all" answer to the question, "How should the portal be used?"

Those who claim the portal (and NIL) don't work cite Colorado and aTm as corroborating evidence.

Counter argument:
Washington, Oregon, Texas and FSU
None of them would be competing for the CFP if not for the portal.

Folks can give arguments and counter-arguments all day long. But, the fact is each school is unique. And, each school has to figure out the best use of the portal (and the NIL) for their institution.

that doesn't mean that there aren't good players out there who haven't gotten a deal worked out. There are certainly good players at lower level schools that would kill to come to Clemson.

Not sure about the portal, but heard from the horses's mouth that one QB didn't go to Clemson or Alabama because neither Dabo or Saban would promise them NIL money if they did not play. I suspect that the same is true with the portal. Some coaches are not going to cheat ...... and I think Dabo is one!

Its common sense. A player announced he has entered the portal and a few days later announces his commitment to the new school. There was no time for visits or evaluation. Note this is for guys like the WF QB and other high end commits, meaning the ones you would want Clemson to sign. Compare that timing to the amount of time to commit out of HS. It is clear to any reasonable person what is happening.

This argument holds no water. You're saying that Clemson can't contact such a kid after he declares for the portal and offer him more? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure what kids might be coming out before the declaration date. So many go to lower schools, there's no way that some wouldn't jump at the chance to come to Clemson.

The tampering usually occurs before they hit the portal, which is why they usually announce shortly after they enter it. There is plenty of talent already in the portal to evaluate and decide whether or not to extend an offer.

You don't have to cheat to use it; you might have to cheat for some of the very best players that make themselves available, which we obviously won't do. However, that happens in HS recruiting as well.

It's just contacting young college players' high school friends, former coaches & family members and having a conversation about the player's happiness and willingness to transfer for more playing time and money. Throw in a "finder's fee" for the go-between and that begins to describe the situation.

I wish we could develop a system where athletes came to college to get a degree and used athletics as the means to pay for it.

I wish we could develop a system where colleges were not the minor league for the NFL and NBA.

But, that ain't gonna happen. So, each school has to figure out how to best utilize the system we currently have.

I don't think he has a problem using the portal when a spot is available. I think he does have a problem with pushing someone out in order to use the portal.

If Dabo had an "open mind" to the portal he's had many opportunities.......

over the last few years to use it.

Spots being available is a cop out excuse b/c Dabo CHOSE to kick the open schollies from exits to the portal to some combination of walk-ons and/or freshman next class.

We've lost an average of 8-9 per year to the portal the last 5 years. A little planning or earmarking when exits occur prevents the "schollie not available issue".

"numbers" excuse.

when a player exits to the portal Dabo doesn't just stash the schollies away for a rainy day. He uses them and his MO has been to use them on either walk-on and/or the NEXT freshman class..........either route is an issue when it's accumulating w/o supplemental portal use.

Walk-on - self explanatory
Next freshman class - in all likelihood it's a "fallback" option considering it'd be a late offer......secondary to that is it's a revolving door of "forever young"

While I think NIL and the portal will be the ruination of college football...

If I understand the possible returning scholarship numbers, it looks like Clemson may be well over the 85 limit even with some players departing via the portal. This may be the year to forgo a 20 player recruiting class to allow for 2 or 3 transfer players at critical position groups. We will need experienced players at LB and DE at very least and a talented WR would be a major bonus.

I believe the Tigers are at 17 commits currently. Anyone else they add will likely be a 3 star or less development player that will not contribute next season if ever become a starter. Second thing, Dabo needs to rethink extending scholarships to players who still have a covid year left. Unless they are an obvious starter let them pursue that final year elsewhere. They should already have their degree, thus Dabo has fulfilled his promise to them. The program can’t allow for graduated scholarship players hanging around taking a few grad classes when players with greater upside contribution can be added via the portal. Just my view on how the roster could be managed differently.

I don’t like the portal or Nil as I’m old school. However since it has been made legal I don’t blame anyone from using it. I don’t blame FSU for using the portal as there is no way they would be in this position without it. They have brought in some great players. Coleman and Wilson have had the greatest impact along with Verse in my opinion. I wished Dabo would selectively use it. Perhaps FSU will get where they don’t have to use it as much.

I support Dabo and his right to lead the team as he sees fit. However, I do have to ask myself if there is another Top 50 program in the country with the same stance, and if it really stands to reason that Dabo is the only one that got it right? That just kind of defies logic but if the results are there then the question answers itself.

I feel like if we are ever going to bring anyone in, this is probably the year to do so; if we don't use it now, we probably never will.

So, Oregon, Washington and FSU all have COVID year QBs.. the most important spot on the field. Could argue that is more valuable than the portal itself... considering each transferred only once.

Add that Jayden Daniels is a covid year guy too and your top 3 Heisman candidates should be in the NFL... I guess that's why they are Heisman finalists.

A lot of it has to do with the state of the program, most of the schools that benefited from the portal were in a nothing to lose category, they were already having bad to mediocre seasons. Teams like FSU did whatever was neccessary to get their program back on track. Teams like Clemson were still feeling good about their recruiting prospects and taking the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. I think Dabo will eventually dive into the portal now to feel the weakest holes, even if its just 1 or 2 players every year or so. Clemson is still recruiting at a high level, but have missed on a couple key guys and obviously the coordinator and position coaching aspect has been in a transition the last couple years. If an off year is 8 or 9 wins then so be it. Clemson will stay relevant and near the top regardless as long as Dabo is HC.
