Clemson Missed Two Opportunities To Make Our Basketball Program Much Better

IMHO, Clemson could have gotten our men's basketball program elevated to be among the best in the ACC.
Press Maravich and son Pistol Pete could have brought national recognition to Clemson Basketball. Pistol Pete holds the all time scoring record in college basketball. His presemce as a Clemson player could have turned the tide for us in recruiting. At the time the ACC was the best BB conference in the country. Clemson should have offered Press Maravich whatever amount of money it would have taken to keep him. Maravich and his son did not elevate the LSU program but I think they could have made a big difference for Clemson.

Same with Rick Barnes. Undoubtedly the best BB coach we ever had. Should have offered him whatever amount of money it would have taken to keep him. He went on to be the best BB coach Texas ever had. The program rose to its highest level of prominence under the direction of former head coach Rick Barnes (1998–2015). Barnes guided Texas to 16 NCAA tournament appearances in his 17 seasons with the program,[10] including a school-record 14 consecutive appearances (1999–2012), as well as fifteen 20-win seasons overall and a school-best 13 consecutive 20-win seasons (2000–12)

Clemson just is not interested in making our BB program better than what it has always been. Mediocre.

Barnes wasn’t going to stay … there were issues that had nothing to do with basketball

Agreed. Additionally, we have never funded our Basketball program in this manner. Luckily our recent uptick in funding has already paid dividends.

The basketball program is definitely a top 40 funded program if not top 25.

There are no excuses. None whatsoever. Win NOW or be gone.

We are toward the bottom of the ACC in basketball funding.***

Didn't stop Texas from hiring him.

Press was 55-96 while at Clemson.

Pete was exciting and scored a lot but his teams never did much in college or the NBA. It seemed more like a show than winning basketball.

Loved Barnes though. Think he was our best coach ever.

Saying we’ve always been mediocre is being too generous.

The Maravich’s were almost 60 yrs ago. Kinda weird to complain about our decisions just after they cut the bottom of the peach baskets off.
