ACC football programs from top to bottom....
Oct 7, 2013, 5:15 PM
|
|
My ranking 1-14....left out Maryland and pulled in 'Ville.
1. Clemson...best facilities, commitment to winning, primarily focused resources on one sport
2. FSU...Florida recruiting, tradition of winning, passionate fanbase
3. Louisville...Papa Johns money, new facilities, good coaching staff
4. VT...aging staff could be an issue down the road...good recruiters in the state of Va...program has taken a step back recently.
5. Miami...local recruiting hot bed...no stadium of their own and bad fan base support.
6. NC State....only NC school that is passionate about football.
7. GT...very tough academic standards limits recruting...offensive system limits the number of kids who want to play at GT.
8. NC...I hate NC...nuf said.
9. Pitt...very good facilities...good tradition...good local recruiting but haven't been able to pull it together in a LONG LONG time.
10. UVA...no threat to win since G Welsh left the program years ago....wine and cheese crowd are more worried about their pre game spread vs winning.
11. BC...playing in a pro sports town in the northeast...little attn to the program.
12. Cuse...simply don't have the talent to compete right now.
13. Duke...I hate Duke...just as bad as NC.
14. Wake...good coaching staff but lack of resources is tough to overcome.
How would you rank em?

Clemson FSU
The first two are on fire. Take your pick on who is on top. I give it to us because A) we have a noted win (Georgia) and B) I'm completely biased.
VT - As everyone proclaims the demise of Coach Beamer, they are 5-1 and will probably be favored in all games this year except @Miami. They could very easily finish the season 10-2 with loses to the #1 team and a top 10 team on the road.
Miami - But they need a stadium. And they need to keep their noses clean.
Louisville - talented, though I wonder what will happen without Bridgewater. This athletic program overall is just killing it, though. Could take a hit next year playing tougher competition without Teddy.
GT - Unorthadox but always a threat to beat you.
Pitt - Undervalued history and potential - they need stability.
NC State - Don't lose to Wake.
BC - Another team that needs stability. Their school leadership let their egos hurt that team.
Cuse - You nailed it. They were just two steps slower than Clemson, start to finish. They don't have the horses.
UVA - Listless, but recruiting fairly well.
Duke - Higher than their talent because I know they're planning big things (big by Duke Football standards) for their facilities, and I give them credit for that as well as having a good coach.
Wake - Also higher because they nipped NCSU. They invested big time in Grobe but he doesn't seem to have the fire right now.
UNC - The dreaded whammy of being completely corrupt, "win at all costs" while not winning. 55 points to ECU.

switch NC and NC State...

Also, switch UofL and Miami. I'm not convinced that Louisville can sustain the level of play that they showed against Florida last year.
NC just has too much talent not to be a 8- 9 win team, while NC State is going to struggle a little bit because Tom O'Brien forgot he had to recruit.

you're right about Louisville

They had quite a year as they BCS'ed, Men's BB Champs, and went to the CWS. (think that's correct) And yes, Papa's money helps. I'd expect them to remain strong into the future.
FSU raises TONS of money. Their budget might even trump ours but not sure.
Obviously we're here talking the sport that matters but basketball does bring in some revenue. UNC and Duke are national brands who bring in tons of revenue through the hoops. I do believe it would benefit us to upgrade our facilities. Yes, its not popular but we could use an arena. The sooner the better for me. That way we can begins talks on a new ballpark. jmo

Don't understand how it can be argued that Pitt has nice facilities and Miami needs a new stadium. They are both off campus professional stadiums and neither is ideal for the college experience.

No way you can put Wake last

For multiple reasons, the most obvious being that they have a more recent ACC championship than UVA, Miami, UNC, NCSU, Duke, UMD, BC, etc.
And they have a winning record against all of the other NC schools under Grobe.

Not sure about NCSU

Honestly, #6 - #14 is pretty much a tie, lol.
I'd rank Ga Tech ahead NCSU though.
Having worked there of 16 years, I never felt as if they were truly into football.
The alums and fans I worked with talked about football and were happy when Chuck Amato cobbled together hat 11-win, 4th place finish one year and they even traveled down to the bowl game that year because it was in Florida and they were playing Notre Dame ... but other than that one particular year, their attitude was decidedly ho-hum about Wolfpack football.
The people I know don't even drive over to UNC, Duke, or Wake when the team plays there.
Seriously.

If we are ranking the overall program, I still think FSU edges us out. I think the tradition and recruiting put them above us for now, until we can sustain this level f success for several more years.

Georgia Tech is at a recruiting disadvantage due to academics?

I thought it was due to Paul Johnson.

Wake has a billion dollar endowment and can afford really nice facilities. Unfortunately, the fan base is too small and spread out. I know a number of WF graduates, including an 80 year old that is a fan of UNC rather than WF for some reason.
