How many 4 and 5 star players have meaningful NFL careers compared to 3 stars? That is probably the more relevant comparison.

5 stars have a 63% chance of getting drafted, while 3 stars have a 5-6% chance. Percentages don’t tell the whole story because there are a lot more three stars, but it’s definitely directionally accurate.

But that wasn’t his question. How do they perform once in the NFL. There is no correlation between recruiting ranking (stars) and future earnings or total games played. So 5 stars play in college and get drafted into the NFL because they’re 5 stars. But the 2, 3 and 4 stars that do make it are absolutely as likely to excel in the NFL. So the recruiting rankings are not a true evaluation of talent distribution.

Average number of years in the NFL by star rankings would be an interesting comparison. Does perceived talent coming out of high school correlate with longer NFL careers for those who were higher rated? Of course, lots of things can skew that data but it still would be interesting to see.

of talent distribution. 2,3&4☆s the do make it are absolutely as likely to excel as 5☆s"..here on the 3rd planet from the star Sol, 2&3☆s are more likely to be fringe players not perennial Pro-Bowlers and please tell the last 9 or so CFP Champions about the major recruiting service's (☆rating perplayer) rankings failure as a talent evaluation metric.
"There in no correlation between recruiting rankings and future earnings...". False, many correlations can be found; wishing otherwise doesn't change this fact.
Take that for data–

We’ve been doing our best to bring that 5 star drafted percentage down.

Former star rankings have little correlation to total NFL games played or career earnings. It’s been studied. Given the imbalance of 5 stars in the draft process this could suggest that 5 stars are grossly overvalued going into their NFL careers. This is easily explained by the NFLs over reliance on the college football system which is itself beholden to the extremely biased recruiting services. Neither the NFL nor College Football have significant investments in talent scouting. The NFL farmed this out to college football and college football let unregulated and unaccountable third party firms take over the industry.

i mean all the 5stars come from the same high schools

and rankings boost and drops depend on the athletes committed to program

....Hunter Renfro was a 2*.

Back during our championship run I used to say that I'd take a Dabo 3* over other programs 4* or even 5*s.

When you have an exceptional eye for talent, and recruit resilience, toughness, and players with hard work ethic you're going to win a lot of games. If, the coaches can develop players at a high level.

Clemson hasn't developed guys as well as they used to at certain positions though. With the exception of WR, I think we're on the way back up.

Limited face to face recruiting made it hard for even that exceptional eye for talent to evaluate players well during Covid. Also players couldn’t experience the campuses for a few years. Al of these things played a role as well.

What do you think would happen to Clemson if we only signed 3 star players? This is a genuine question.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I suspect Clemson signs mostly 3-stars as it is.

Because, if you put recruits into cohorts, the largest cohort is the three cohort. Right? Maybe not.

But let's assume that's true.

In which case, I would say the 3s offer the greatest opportunity for success, because they're the largest group.

E.g, instead of walking into the wild with a big ol'.375 on the hunt for 5-stars, why not go out there with a Marlin 30/30 and bag a bunch of 3-stars. You'll probably eat better and, in the process, drop a few trophies for the wall.

I don't have time but would love to break down the incoming star-ratings for the last two championship teams Clemson has fielded. I suspect they're mostly 3-stars for the above reason.

So to answer the question, I think if Clemson signed *only* three-star recruits, the program likely wouldn't drop-off. But I'm no statistician. Maybe the math isn't on my side and it's the odd 4- and 5-star guys that mean the difference between championships and also-rans.

But if the math is on my side, it turns the conversation to the intangibles of character, player development, skill position coaching, nutrition, training, etc.

It seems Clemson offers 3-star recruits as good a chance to grow into 5-star performers as any other program.

I'm talking about the football program. Not the basketball program.
